Product, link and comment deletion policies on ProductWiki are still up for discussion. Please feel free to leave a comment or suggestion! Also be sure to read about how you can help.

Speedy Deletion

Products and links and that are identified as spam, vandalism or unfit for ProductWiki (we are a family friendly site) will be deleted by administrators without delay and without warning. Subject to interpretation by the administrator, the specific criteria for products and links that fall under this category are outlined below.

Products

Any product identified as...

  • vandalism
  • spam
  • SEO attempts
  • not a product (but rather a service, concept, person, animal, etc...)
  • not suitable for ProductWiki (in terms of being 'family friendly')
  • poorly researched, written, or poorly suited to ProductWiki

... may or may not be deleted promptly at the discretion of administrators. If you disagree with an administrators speedy deletion please feel free to inquire and explain your actions. This can be done through the forum or personal message directed at the administrator that deleted your entry.

Links & Comments

All links and comments identified as...

  • vandalism
  • spam
  • SEO attempts (including links to related retailers, personal blogs or review sites)
  • not suitable for ProductWiki (in terms of being 'family friendly')
  • poorly written reviews, or those without enough additional content

... may or may not be deleted promptly at the discretion of administrators. If you disagree with an administrator's speedy deletion please feel free to inquire and explain your use of that link on the product's talk page where both administrators and users can respond.

Deletion

Products that are nominated for deletion will go through a 5-day evaluation period where users and administrators alike will research and discuss said product and judge it on its merits. Discussion and debate will take place directly on the products talk page or an attached forum thread. Once the 5 day evaluation period is up administrators and moderators will pass judgment on whether or not the product will be left as it is or removed from the site.

Things to take into account when considering a products merits:

  • Notoriety - one of the most important criteria. Is the product well known? Is the brand name known? Does the product serve a popular alternative to other well known options?
  • Availability - is the product available over a significant enough geographical area? Is the product sold through only one distributor, or several? Online only, or brick and mortar locations as well?
  • Quality - Does it appear to be a quality product? Should people be aware of any shortfalls or positive aspects of this product?
  • Purpose - does the product appear to serve an important purpose? Does it 'fit in' with other products here on ProductWiki?

If research into such a product is not really your idea of a good time, there are many other ways to assess whether a product should be considered legitimate or not. For example, a product may be a good idea to keep if they have:

  • taps, comments or votes by legitimate users
  • original, useful information

and not a good idea to keep if they contain:

  • copied-and-pasted marketing material
  • shill comments, reviews, voting, or tapping in an attempt to mislead readers
  • SEO links

I'm curious as to what all is allowed on PW. I've seen hot-dog toasters, TIME magazine, and even SNES games. I guess the consensus would be that they are all some sort of product. I suppose the differentiation between acceptable and unacceptable might perhaps be whether a product is merely being detailed, or a service is being offered through the product. I'm curious though as to what products constitute a breach in PW regulations? For instance, could I hypothetically submit a content page on PlayBoy magazine? Or better yet (I deserve points for creativity here), could a female post a page about a specific brand of vibrator that she enjoys? Suppose I chose to construct a page on WD-40 (the greatest lubricant of all time - non-sexually speaking of course), would that be acceptable? Food for thought! Okay, I'm going to bed now. Feel free to delete this absolutely stupid and retarded 6-in-the-morning comment :-D.

Well I've laid out the fact that ProductWiki is a clean, family friendly website, so I hope that answers a couple of your questions ;)

But yeah... I've noticed a lot of leeway in terms of what passes as a product here on PW. Website that are far from the standard definition of a "product" are not only allowed, but are contributed to by a lot of our power users and administrators...

As long as it is interesting, pertinent and not completely random it seems like it's fair game :)
