Leaving Your Own Links on Product Details Section

I agree with jwhitakr, we need a policy, not a disclaimer. My thoughts about external links are closely related to Wikipedia's policies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_links

Here's my proposal:

How to link

Links to external websites should be primarily be restricted to the "External Links" section of the details tab. Inline links within the opening paragraph or the details are reserved for products, categories, articles, and threads residing on the ProductWiki domain.

What to link

  • the manufacturer's product details page
  • in-depth product reviews written by experts or consumers who have direct hands on experience with the product that go beyond the depth and scope of what would be considered a "Featured Product Report" (we need to define the term, but, basically this is a product report that is good enough to be feature on the ProductWiki home page)
  • in-depth threads on forums that go into detail beyond the information listed on the page and/or support the pros/cons, details listed on the ProductWiki report
  • links to the manufacturer's press release about the product if the product is new
  • Wikipedia's corresponding article on the product has more information than would be in a Featured report

What NOT to link

  • blog posts, articles, threads, user reviews that do not contain more information than what would be contained in a Featured Report
  • stores that sell the product
  • links added for the purpose of promoting a website
  • content that is factually inaccurate
