When did mother's day become such a big holiday?

I was out of town this weekend visiting a couple of friends of mine, and when I called some other friends that I knew lived in the city, they were all back home for mothers day. I found that pretty surprising as I didn't know people would travel and go out of their way for mothers day. I can see sending a card, giving a call, that kind of thing, but it almost felt like a "real" holiday, and not some Hallmark manufactured one.

I'm of course of the philosophy that you shouldn't need a special day to celebrate mothers/fathers and be good to them all year round. Birthdays are better occasions for that anyway.

Has Hallmark won?

Hallmark will only win when Grandparents day becomes a large holiday.

It already exists, it's just a matter of time before we start to see the sappy commercials and flower arrangements in shop windows.
