Community question: Product vs. Category links on home page?

Have a look at the top of the home page. We currently list 8 of the most popular categories with an example picture below it. The text link goes to the category (ie. Televisions) and the picture link goes to the product (ie. Panasonic Viera 800).

Should the picture go to the product directly (as it is now), or to the category?

my vote would be to go to the category.

It seems to be more of just a sample picture for the category.

On a side note, I kind of miss the category links on the main page.  Just from my perspective, what is more important to put on the main page

1.  Recent changes / featured people

2.  links to the product categories

How about on the main page, removing the reccent changes/featured people lists and replacing them with the same category  list that appears on http://www.productwiki.com/products/ (right panel) ?

Good points, yaminb. I agree, I think the picture link should go to the category for the reasons you listed.

(just noticed the FCKEditor carriage return/scroll bug in Firefox..ugh)

I like the idea of putting the "category navigator" found on the products page on the right-hand-side of the home page. This was actually debated in our design. That being said, let's kill two birds with one stone:

What should be listed on the Right-Hand-Side (RHS) of the home page (and in what order)?

Here are the available modules:

  • Picture of the Day/Week *
  • Recent Changes (mini-version) *
  • RSS Subscription box *
  • Featured People *
  • Category Navigator (as found on /products/ RHS)
  • Anything else you can think of not yet existing...

Keep in mind, that order indicates priority, but it also is affected by the vertical size of the element. For example, the "Featured People" module is short whereas the "Category Navigator" is tall.

As far as the "anything else you can think of.." category, I've been mulling around the concept of a statistics module and/or page. We could show top users by # of edits (all-time, monthly), most popular products by views, and/or most popular products by edits.

I would say the following from top to bottom:

picture of the day.  I had no idea what a deer was doing on the rhs.  Now I get it.  Yeah, we can keep that at the top too :)  Good to have some random stuff.

small RSS subscribtion box (drop/shorten this text:  "Stay on top of things with our daily newsletter delivered directly to your inbox with the latest featured content from ProductWiki.")

below that the category navigator.

Featured people should probably stay on the RHS somewhere, but I like yaminb's ideas. The links at the top should definitely go to category.

Alright, I think there's a consensus here that product images should be linked to the category. We've posted a mini-update to reflect that change. Also, you'll notice the "category navigator" on the RHS. Featured people is still there, and it's been expanded to include 7 users.

Also, we put a "Photo of the week" caption below the photo, to remove any confusion about what the heck that is.

Oh, and the FCKEditor version has been updated to fix the annoying scrolling bug experienced by FF3 users. To make sure you've got the latest version of FCKEditor, click the "?" icon and make sure it says version 2.5 SVN and not 2.5 beta. If it doesn't, you should clear your browser cache.
