HP EliteBook 2540p

$1,099.00 Released March, 2010

Product Shot 1 The Pros:3 year global warranty included as standard. Full size keyboard in a compact chassis. Magnesium alloy innards and lid.

The Cons:Keyboard is below average, compared to Dell Latitude and the Thinkpad. Only two mouse buttons as opposed to 3 smaller buttons. Uses slower 1.8" hard drive.

The 2540p is part of the high-end EliteBook series of notebooks from HP. There are three different versions of this 12.1" notebook, the WH283UT ($1629.00), the WH282UT ($1549.00), and the WH281UT ($1099.00).

HP is promoting the 2540p as the smallest and most lightweight (starting at 3.38 lbs) notebook in the EliteBook Series, which means that it is also the most portable. HP has emphasized the fact that the 2540p meets MIL-STD 810G military standards in terms of vibration, dust, humidity, altitude, and extreme temperatures. The magnesium-alloy casing and scratch-resistant DuraFinish of the 2540p no doubt aid in this toughness. The comparatively low cost of the WH281UT stems from the fact that it has no optical drive or Bluetooth 2.1 (which both other models have), as well as from the fact that it has an Intel Core i5 processor as opposed to an Intel Core i7 processor.
