Huawei Ascend
$150.00
Released October, 2010
The Pros:Affordable price point - no contract! 3G and WiFi connectivity. Runs one of the latest versions of Google's powerful open source Android operating system (2.1).
The Cons:Cheaper plastic build. Poor 3.2MP fixed-focus camera. Has a 2.5mm headset jack instead of the 3.5mm standard.
The Huawei Ascend is an entry-level prepaid smartphone available on Cricket Wireless. It features Google's Android OS (version 2.1) with a customized user interface, a 3.2" capacitive touchscreen with multi-touch support, a 600MHz processor and 256MB of RAM (512MB of ROM).
Additionally, the Ascend sports EV-DO rev.A data, 3G capability, a 3.2 megapixel camera and integrated 802.11b/g WiFi.
The Ascend's Android OS provides it with all of the same features as any Android phone: Google Maps, access to the Android Market, etc. However, its modified user interface provides the Ascend with slightly different functionality with features such as a nine-panel home screen (as opposed to the standard 3 or 5). Additionally, the Ascend's 600MHz processor and 256MB of RAM ensure that it should run most applications smoothly with some possible slowdown with more demanding apps such as games.
