Winner of Popular Science's most innovative product of 2006 the Hurriquake nail is designed to decrease building destruction due to hurricanes and earthquakes by up to 50%. This massive increase in quality comes at a very marginal cost: an 2000 square foot home will cost $15 more.

More information

The increase in reliability comes from the combination of 3 changes to the traditional nail.  1) a wider head to prevent the nail from getting pulled through the sheath and at the same time still fit inside of popular nail-guns. 2) Protruding barbs for extra holding power. 3) a twisted shank to hold the nail in place inside of the larger sheath caused by the barbs.

For $15 / house, there's almost no downside. This should be the nail of choice for all builders, if it really is that much stronger and more effective at prevent damage in the case of natural disaster.
