If you haven't heard the song yet, you must be one of those people that avoid the radio at all costs. Stupid Girls, Pink's first release from her newest album, has been permeating the radio waves through every station imaginable. Whether the station is dance, rock, or pop, she's got all her bases covered. The marketing machine behind Pink must have paid big bucks to get this song out so quickly and so pervasively.
It doesn't help that the media have been touting the song as a "meaningful message", which brings me to the crux of my issue with this song. Yes, it's catchy, it's been stuck in my head for the last few days, but message? The only message I'm getting is one of hypocrisy. Take, for instance, these lyrics:
What happened to the dreams of a girl president
She's dancing in the video next to 50 Cent
This is coming from the girl who, in her first video, was completely nude, covered only by rose petals. Why is no one asking her about this video and how she has been (or is) one of these girls? The video for this song is also something to be considered. How can you tout a meaningful message -
Baby if I act like that, flipping my blonde hair back
Push up my bra like that, stupid girl!
- while the person behind the message brushes back her platinum-blonde locks and sticks out her gravity-defying cleavage?
The funniest part of this video is when Pink is singing about smart girls, and to demonstrate the phenomenom, sticks to the tried-and-true method of shoving on some thick-rimmed glasses. Way to be anti-stereotypical Pink. You really are the anti-Paris.
