This is one of IKEA's sturdiest beds. I've had multiple friends go to IKEA and try out all the beds. The Malm is the sturdiest wood bed IKEA currently makes according to them (the metal frame beds are also sturdy). So don't waste your money on other wooden IKEA beds (it comes in at least 3 different colours as well).

This bed was originally designed by Philipp Mainzer for (e15) a German furniture and architectural design firm known for modern solid wood furniture. The original bed is called SL02 MO, it is made in solid oak, and can be seen on e15.com.
I am very sad and angry that IKEA has copied the design of this bed, knowing full well that e15 is too small to fight it. This bed is probably their best selling bed...i have lost alot of respect for IKEA, because they pride themselves for originality and credit their designers. In this case, they are laughing all the way to the bank copying work without paying any fees for using the design, while e15 works hard to make it to the next level.

I've never "tested" the squeekiness per-say... but I am pretty active sleeper, and I've slept in this bed many times. From my experience it was quite quiet. Very little squeekiness, which surprised me actually.

I have been sleeping in this bed for about 3 years. Have disassembled and reassembled it during a move, and have had no problems with it at all. No squeakiness, rattling, shaking, etc......very sturdy frame. I have the birch finish.

To Jacinda M: Beds frames (as well as mattresses) come in different sizes/widths. Single, double, queen, and king. Make sure you buy the same size frame as your mattress. I think the Ikea Malm comes in different sizes...check on the Ikea website.

i was wondering if anyone knew if the bed base was necessary if you have a boxspring, or if the boxspring would essentially act as the base? i cant tell from the website, but it looks like having a mattress and box spring would make the bed high enough that the headboard would essentially disappear? i have a queen mattress & boxspring already, so if possible i just want to get the frame, not the base. thanks for any responses!

Dennis B: The Malm is a platform bed. Platform beds use slats which give some flexibility and support the mattress. No box spring is used.  It may be possible though, I have no first hand experience but it was mentioned elsewhere that the bed had height adjustments.

Yes... the mattress height is adjustable. I am 5'9 and loved the bed but wasn't looking forward to having to fling myself out of bed. I was happy to discover that the height could be adjusted. I love Ikea!!!!!!!

The bed is fine, but the "IKEA Direct" method is extremely unforgiving. I bought the bed, which is fine, but it is longer than wider, and I must turn my bed wider than longer or I cannot walk through my room.
I paid $229 for the bed, $130 to ship it here (dumb, but I had no other options: no one with car, no time to run to store & pay for car service). To return it costs $100!! So I will have paid more than the price of the bed, and have no bed after all this mess...just $230 to the shipping company.
So, measure carefully, or it will cost you!

I have the IKEA Malm bed in black/brown and we use a sleep number bed with a foundation (basically a box spring). In addition to the bed, you need to also buy a $10 midbeam. Although cheap, it is essential!

With a box spring and mattress, you don't have much of a headboard - maybe 4 or 5 inches from the higher setup and 8 or 9 inches from the lower one. With the setup, you have to pay incredibly close attention to the instructions. There are little things, that are easy to miss (such as putting small screws and plastic washers that go into two of about a dozen holes on a part) and end up making the difference between sleeping well and crashing to the floor due to missing part of a step.

My wife and I purchased the malm bed frame for about $200 and opted for cheaper nightstands (rather than their $200 nightstands that run the width of the bed. If I could go back and do it again, I would buy the malm nightstands and use a normal, $30 metal bed frame with the mattress and box spring

A note of caution - they told us that if you use a boxspring, the slats are not needed. YOU NEED THE SLATS. Our Boxspring fell through, and is pretty much ruined as a result of the lack of support.
