Intel Core i7

Intel Core i7 is currently a family of three Intel Desktop x86-64 processors, Core i7 is the first Intel family to be released using the Intel Nehalem microarchitecture and is the successor to the Intel Core 2 family. All three models are quad-core processors. The Core i7 identifier applies to the initial family of processors codenamed Bloomfield. The moniker Core i7 does not have a deeper meaning, but continues the use of the successful Core brand. Core i7 was officially launched on November 17, 2008 in the USA.

  • Backside support of CPU socket with a metal plate to avoid PCB warping
  • Very tight fit of CPU in socket
  • New Socket with improved cooler mounting method

Cons

  • requires a new socket - impossible for people to just upgrade their CPUs
  • high TDPs means these chips are very hot and use a lot of power
  • not that big of an upgrade for those interested in gaming
  • Only insanely-priced 965 XE has unlocked multiplier (Phenom II with unlocked multiplier is available at 1/4 the price)
