Beginning as a fork of the browser component (Navigator) of the Mozilla Application Suite, Firefox has since become the Mozilla Foundation's main development focus (along with the Thunderbird mail and news client), replacing the Mozilla Suite as the foundation's official main software release. The current version is 3.6, released on January 21th, 2010. The first version of Firefox was released November 9th, 2004 as version 1.6; before that the browser was known as Firebird, and before that, Phoenix.

Opera

Opera is a web browser and internet suite developed by the Opera Software company. The browser handles common Internet-related tasks such as displaying websites, sending and receiving e-mail messages, managing contacts, IRC online chatting, downloading files via BitTorrent, and reading web feeds. Opera is offered free of charge for personal computers and mobile phones, but for other devices it must be paid for.

Features of Opera include tabbed browsing, page zooming, mouse gestures, and an integrated download manager. Its security features include built-in phishing and malware protection, strong encryption when browsing secure web sites, and the ability to easily delete private data such as HTTP cookies.

Opera runs on a variety of personal computer operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris. Evaluations of Opera have been largely positive, and it has innovated or pioneered many key features of modern browsers. Despite these factors, Opera has captured only a small fraction of the worldwide personal computer browser market. It does, though, have a stronger market share on mobile devices such as mobile phones, smartphones, and personal digital assistants. Editions of Opera are available for devices using the Symbian and Windows Mobile operating systems, as well as Java ME-enabled devices. Approximately 40 million mobile phones have shipped with Opera pre-installed. Opera is the only commercial web browser available for the Nintendo DS and Wii gaming systems. Some television set-top boxes use Opera. Adobe Systems has licensed Opera technology for use in the Adobe Creative Suite.

History

Opera started out as a research project in Norway's largest telecom company, Telenor, in 1994, and branched out into an independent development company named Opera Software ASA in 1995. Opera Software develops the Opera Web browser, a high-quality, multi-platform product for a wide range of platforms, operating systems and embedded Internet products.

Vision

Opera's vision is to deliver the best Internet experience on any device. Opera's key business objective is to earn global leadership in the market for PC/desktops and embedded products. Opera's main business strategy is to provide a browser that operates across devices, platforms and operating systems, and can deliver a faster, more stable and flexible Internet experience than its competitors.

Fast Facts

Opera Software ASA is an industry leader in the development of Web browsers for the desktop, device and mobile markets. The Opera browser has received international recognition from end-users and the industry press for being faster, smaller and more standards-compliant than other browsers, and it has gathered a cult following on the net.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome is a web-browser from Google released on September 2nd, 2008. There are three main areas on which Google intends to improve the browsing experience compared to its more entrenched counterparts: security, anonymity, performance. Under the hood there are new browser models implemented that separate the rendering from the program itself, what this means is that individual pages won't slow down or completely crash the entire browser program. On the performance side Google has implemented their own Javascript rendering engine, called V8 that is reported to be 100 times faster than IE7's. On December 11, 2008 Google removed the "beta" designation with it's version 1.0 launch.

Features

totally Open Source

rewritten javascript engine (V8)

Webkit rendering

Address bar functionality comparable to Firefox' awesome bar

Incognito mode for privacy

Sandbox architecture prevents tabs from slowing each other, and crashing browser

The new Chakra JavaScript engine is the chief improvement, as it makes for faster loading and improved web page responsiveness. The improved speed of this browser is the main feature emphasized by Windows in promotion, with text, graphics and video all hardware-accelerated. To keep the speed of this browser uninhibited, it is equipped with a new automatic notification feature that lets you know when add-ons are slowing you down. To make the browsing experience simple for everyone, Windows Internet Explorer 9 utilizes a simplified platform, with fewer controls than Internet Explorer 8.

Windows Internet Explorer

Windows Internet Explorer (formerly Microsoft Internet Explorer abbreviated MSIE), commonly abbreviated to IE, is a series of proprietary graphical web browsers developed by Microsoft and included as part of the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems starting in 1995. The current version of Internet Explorer is 8.0.

After the first release for Windows 95, additional versions of Internet Explorer were developed for other operating systems: Internet Explorer for Mac and Internet Explorer for UNIX (the latter for use through the X Window System on Solaris and HP-UX). Only the Windows version remains in active development; the Mac OS X and UNIX version are no longer supported.

It has been the most widely used web browser since 1999, peaking at nearly 90% market share with IE6 in the early 2000s—corresponding to over 900 million users worldwide by 2006.

Though released in 1995 as part of the initial OEM release of Windows 95, Internet Explorer was not included in the first retail, or shrink-wrap, release of Windows 95. The most recent release is version 7.0, which is available as a free update for Windows XP with Service Pack 2, and Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 or later, and is included with Windows Vista. Versions of Internet Explorer prior to 6.0 SP2 are also available as a separate download for versions of Windows prior to Windows XP. An embedded OEM version called Internet Explorer for Windows CE (IE CE) is also available for WinCE based platforms and is currently based on IE6. Another Windows CE/ Windows Mobile browser known as Internet Explorer Mobile is from a different codebase and should not be confused with desktop versions of the browser.

HTMtied

HTMtied instantly converts any Internet address (link, URL, bookmark, favorite) to a very small HTML file that when opened in any browser, it will automatically load that address. Use it when you want to save an Internet address for future use on your computer, tablet, smartphone, web storage, Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, etc.

Using HTMtied is easy as 1, 2, 3. Step 1: Copy the Internet address from your browser's address bar or from any link to the Clipboard. Step 2: Run HTMtied (from the Desktop, Start Menu, or better yet, from a shortcut key you define). HTMtied will automatically convert that address to a linking HTML file and copy the file to the Clipboard. Step 3: Simply paste the file anywhere you want.

Starting with Version 2.0, HTMtied supports conversion of links en masse: copy any number of Internet addresses on separate lines to the Clipboard or drag and drop any number of URL files over HTMtied, and linking HTML files will be created for each address. There is also the new Direct Mode, a special HTMtied shortcut that, when clicked, it will automatically save all the link HTML files to a directory of your choosing (Documents, Dropbox, etc.).

HTMtied is so easy to use that it doesn't even need a user interface: if everything goes well, the famous "Tada" sound is played. On failure, an error sound is played.

Windows and Internet Explorer can save Internet addresses to URL files. However, URL files are not a standard and cannot be used across different platforms. Linking HTML files created by HTMtied work anywhere. And yes, HTMtied can convert URL files to linking HTML files: simply copy the URL files on the Clipboard and run HTMtied. Or drag and drop the URL files over the HTMtied icon.

Mozilla Firefox 6

Mozilla Firefox 6 is a web browser available on computers running Windows or OS X which is the third in a series of rapid major releases by the Mozilla corporation. Compared to version 5, Firefox 6 boasts faster startup times, emphasized domain names in the address bar and enhanced security with the addition of "permissions". Otherwise, not many noticeable changes are present from Firefox 5 to 6 as the UI remains essentially the same.

Firefox 6's advertised faster startup times depend on a number of factors, particularly the number of tabs set to open on startup, but on the whole, start times should be faster than in version 5 although some reviewers point to benchmarks that state otherwise. Its domain name emphasis, a feature previously present in competing browsers, allows users to more easily tell at a glance the authenticity of a website or modify the URL. Meanwhile, Firefox 6's bolstered security allows users to configure the permissions of any website by typing "about:permissions" into the address bar, allowing them to easily configure cookies, location sharing, pop-ups, passwords and data storage.

Features

Faster startup times than version 5

Emphasized domain names

Enhanced security via "about:permissions"

Awesome Bar

One of these is the look of the browser, which now places tabs at the top of the page instead of just near the top, a design that is meant to be more intuitive. You can instantly turn a page into a tab with the Switch to Tab option. When you are juggling a few applications at once, tabs can be organized by dragging and dropping them into groups. Another new feature of FireFox 4 is the JägerMonkey JavaScript engine, which offers faster start up times and graphics rendering, as well as improved page load speed. HTML5 is supported by this browser, which aids in a consistent performance. As with past versions, Mozilla FireFox 4 is available for free download.

Features

Free download

In informal use it has been used in a number of ways and in combination with other phrases, though all of them have been related to the now-defunct Netscape Communications Corporation and its related application software.

Only three things have ever formally used the term "Mozilla" alone:

the codename for the Netscape Navigator software project

the official name of what was re-named Mozilla Application Suite

Google's Web browser Chrome thrilled with an extremely fast site rendering, a sleek design and innovative features. But it also gets critic from data protection specialists , for reasons such as creating a unique user ID or the submission of entries to Google to generate suggestions. SRWare Iron is a real alternative. The browser is based on the Chromium-source and offers the same features as Chrome - but without the critical points that the privacy concern.

* Chrome and Google are registered trademarks of Google Inc.

Safari

Safari is a web browser developed by Apple Inc. and included in Mac OS X. It was first released as a public beta on January 7, 2003, and was included as the default browser in Mac OS X v10.3. A beta version for Microsoft Windows was released for the first time on June 11, 2007 with support for Windows XP and Windows Vista. Safari has also been run unofficially on Linux under Wine, but the GUI and graphics do not render properly.

In February 2009 the beta for Safari 4 was released. This release includes a complete visual redesign and multiple new features such as full page zoom, speculative loading, ACID 3 compliance, a new and improved JavaScript engine and Cover Flow for websites.

Originally the browsers layout drew many comparisons to Firefox, though lacking Firefox's modularity. As of Safari 4 however, the developers have gone for a more Google Chrome like appearance. Safari includes a built-in RSS reader, native Quicktime support, an integrated pop-up ad blocker and a Web Inspector - a DOM Inspector-like utility that lets users and developers browse the Document Object Model of a web page.

As of January 2009 the market share held by Safari is a respectable 8.29%.
