Apple iPod Touch (2007)

The Apple iPod Touch was announced in an event hosted by Steve Jobs on September 5th, 2007 along with the release of all the next generation iPods. The Touch borrows a lot of the technology found in the Apple iPhone and repurposes it as a standalone portable media player. The iPod Touch features the same multi-Touch interface and operating system as the iPhone. It also becomes the first WiFi enabled iPod with a built-in 802.11b/g wireless access allowing you to browse the Internet with the included Safari browser, and access the iTunes store directly from the iPod Touch.

The Touch includes a flash drive coming in either a 8, 16 or 32 GB capacity. This means that you can store, in any combination, up to (1) 1750, 3500 or 7000 songs, (2) 10,000, 20,000 or 40,000 photos, or (3) 10, 20 or 40 hours of video. Any extra space can be used for data storage. Transfer data to the iPod touch using the included USB cable and an available USB 2.0 port on your Mac or PC. You'll need to be running iTunes version 7.4 with at least Mac OS X v10.4.10 or Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed. Alternatively, datahouse can be transferred to the Touch via the WiFi interface through the iTunes online store.

Expect it to take 3 hours to charge the batteries completely to a Full-charge, and 1.5 hours to do a Fast-charge to 80% capacity. Charging is done through USB or with a AC power adapter (sold separately). There is no word on the expected battery life for browsing the Web or using the built-in WiFi connection.

The iPod Touch was first released on September 7th, 2007 with 8 GB and 16 GB version retailing for $299 and $399 respectively. In February 2008 Apple released a 32GB model for $499. Coinciding with the Touch's initial September release the 8GB Apple iPhone saw a $200 price drop to $399 leading to minor backlash from the early adopters. Steve Jobs subsequently gave the first iPhone owners a $100 store credit for their troubles.

The Apple iPod Touch is a media player and Internet interactive tool. This is the 4th generation of the Apple iPod Touch, and includes two cameras, one on either side of the device. This allows video conferencing and messaging over a Wi-Fi connection. Also new to this version is a 3.5 inch Retina display, which shows images at 326 pixels per inch to create more detail than the eye can pick up. Local maps are also now available but the Touch still lacks a GPS receiver, allowing quick directions from many locations. Connections to the App Store and iTunes can run through a standard Wi-Fi connection, and a Bluetooth connection allows for additional functionality and backups. Email and web browsing is fully supported, as well as browsing YouTube. Video display can be as detailed as the high-definition 720p standard.

Apple iPod Touch (2008)

The 2nd generation iPod Touch improves on the original iPod Touch with a slimmer formfactor and built-in speaker. The same innovative touchscreen is the biggest asset to the iPod Touch, although volume buttons are available for easy access on the side. The updated version has easy access to the Apple App Store, making it, as Steve Jobs would like you to believe, a portable gaming device. The iPod Touch is cheaper than its predecessor, with the 16GB version retailing for $299 (versus the original $399).

The 3rd generation iPod Touch doubles the capacity for the two higher end units, as well as bumping up their internals to be as powerful as the latest iPhone revision, the iPhone 3GS. Capable of running OpenGL 2.0, Steve Jobs later said in an interview that this was to further the Touch as a gaming platform. The cheaper 8GB version of the Touch remains the exact same as the previous generation but did see a slight $30 drop in price.

Its has been updated to match the iPhone 3GS including a new 833MHz ARM-Cortex 8 processor. The price for the new power is a drop in battery life, from 36 hours to 30 hours of audio. The two higher priced sizes, the 32GB and the 64GB, are double the capacity from the 2008 products and all of the 2009 models are capable of running OpenGL 2.0 which Steve Jobs said was to further the Touch as a gaming platform.

The first real ‘tablet’ in the series, the 43 (which is slated to eventually replace the Archos 5) features a faster 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, microSD memory expansion, an improved 720p video camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and an HDMI jack for transmitting to a compatible HDTV. Critics say it's like a smartphone, and that unlike the HTC Evo 4G, it has a leg stand to prop up on for better video viewing. Like its predecessors, the Archos 43 can be used to watch videos, listen to music, browse the Internet, send email, and play 3D games.

Archos 605 WiFi

The Archos 605 WiFi is a powerful WiFi-enabled portable media player (PMP). Its standout feature is its large, high-quality 4.3" touch screen display with 800 x 480 resolution. It is a viable alternative to the recently released Apple iPod Touch because of its extensive media format capabilities, large screen and customization options.

Customizable

The Archos 605 is highly customizable and is popular with geeks, enthusiasts and hackers. The 605 player can be upgraded with plugins available from Archos, or can be hacked and skinned to further customized your UI. A French developer has created an iPhone skin that emulates the popular UI on the Archos.

Media formats

Archos advertises that the 605 supports MPEG-4 and WMV video and MP3, WMA, and WAV audio, however it features native support for the popular DivX and XviD video encoding schemes. It does not support the open-source OGG Vorbis audio format. The Cinema plugin the 605 can be extended to play MPEG-2 encoding video (.vob, .mpg, .ps), and the Video podcast plugin adds H.264 audio/video support (used by iTunes, and podcasts).

WiFi streaming and Web Browsing

It includes a 802.11g WiFi access allowing you to stream media content from your network PC. Also, with the purchase of Opera Web browser plugin ($30), you can browse the web. The browser support Adobe Flash, therefore you can play any embedded web videos like YouTube and DailyMotion. The browser automatically detects the presence of video on a web page and automatically will go into a full-screen viewing mode.

Features

4.3" TFT LCD touch screen, 800 x 480, 16 million colors

Customizable with plugins (Cinema, Web, Video podcast)

WiFi enabled for streaming media content from your networked PC

Browse the Internet with Opera plugin - support Adobe Flash

Can be used as a DVR with DVR Station Accessory

Battery life: video - 5.5 hours, audio - 17 hours

Dimensions:

4.8'' x 3.2'' x 0.6'' (4GB/30GB)

4.8'' x 3.2'' x 0.75'' (80GB/160GB)

Weight: 5.3 oz (4GB), 6.7 oz (30GB), 9.2 oz (80GB/160GB)

The Archos 605 WiFi was released in August 30th, 2007 and starts at $230. It is part of the Generation 5 product line including Archos TV, Archos 705 WiFi, Archos 405, and Archos 105. It comes four months after the release of the Generation 4 Archos players that included the Archos 704 WiFi player.

There are four specific models with different capacities to choose from: (1) 4 GB (flash storage) - $230, (2) 30 GB - $299, (3) 80 GB - $349, and (4) 160 GB - $399. All of the models except the 160 GB version have an SD slot for adding additional storage. The 4GB version features a flash storage solution, and the others have an internal hard drive.

Nokia N800

The N800 is an internet tablet designed for quick and easy access to the internet anywhere a wireless LAN is present, or through a mobile phone with help of a bluetooth connection. It sports the newest version of Opera's mobile browser (for OS2007) or Mozilla MicroB (for OS2008), as well as a built in web-camera for video conferencing. It also has an RSS reader, e-mail application, media player and Voice over IP capabilities. Though these features are the main focus of the product and the marketing of it, users who are willing to dive into the community of user-created applications will find uses never intended by Nokia. The N800 Operating System is Maemo OS2007, based on Debian Linux, making it possible for anyone to code applications for the product. Only a few months old there is already a large number of applications available for it, more being released almost daily.

Main Specs

Processor: 320MHz (400MHz after upgrade to OS2008)

Internal RAM: 128 MB

Other Memory: Two full-size SD card slots, one internal, one external. Officially supports SD, miniSD and microSD cards up to 8 GB, reported to work fine with 32 GB cards. Ships with a 256 MB mini SD card.

WiFi: 802. 11b/g

Bluetooth 2.0

USB 2.0 OTG (works both as master and as slave)

PowerVR MBX graphics accelerator (but functionality is limited, possibly because of licensing restrictions)

Other notes

The Nokia brand name may make you believe this is a mobile phone, but it is not. It does not support calling or texting on the GSM network, through you can use bluetooth and connect to a mobile phone to use it's 3G internet connection. The size factor may make you believe this is a PDA, but again this is not really what it is. It does not come supplied with PDA/PIM software, though you can download this for free yourself. This really is a Linux-based UMPC, but much smaller than most other UMPC's.

The camera is of poor quality due to the fact that it is intended for video conferencing and streaming video effectively over the internet. Image quality is sacrificed for the benefit of refresh rate. The N800 does not ship with a camera application, though Nokia has newly released an official downloadable application for taking pictures and recording video.

Though it is not advertised, the N800 has a FM chip first discovered by a user. Nokia has since released an application utilizing this chip.

The battery life is about 10 days in standby mode, and otherwise varies along with use. It has options to save battery by having it in offline mode, as well as a choice between nine different, easy to access, levels of screen lighting.

Compare to the more compact Nokia N95 as part of Nokia's N series of mobile devies. Succeeded by the Nokia N810.
Fujitsu Lifebook U810

The Lifebook line of notebooks by Fujitsu spans across many areas of size and performance. The U810 is one of the smallest and most portable laptops available putting it squarely in the Ultra-Mobile PC category. Weighing in at 1.5 pounds the U810 is one of the lightest notebook computers available, though this does come at a compromise in performance. Compared to other UMPCs such as the Sony UX490 the Fujitsu features significantly less processing power. True to the UMPC spec the U810 has a touch screen panel, that can swivel around to act as a tablet PC.

Features

800MHz Intel A110 processor

1GB of RAM

40GB hard drive (4200RPM)

5.6" touch screen at 1024x600 resolution

Integrated Ethernet, and A/B/G WiFi

Ports: 1xUSB, 1xVGA out, 1xAudio In, 1xAudio Out

Integrated 0.3MP camera

CF, and SD card reader

Unlike the UX490 which opts for a solid state hard drive to improve battery life and performance, Fujitsu uses a traditional mechanical drive. However, the rated battery life is still 5.5 hours for average use which makes it comparable to the Sony. A fingerprint scanner is added for extra security and frees you from remembering a lot of passwords which is sometimes necessary for business users.

They keyboard is full QWERTY with all the important keys found except for dedicated TAB key - many keys feature multiple functions requiring the Function key to be held down to access. Controlling the mouse can be achieved either by using the touch screen, or a touch point. Fujitsu also includes a pair of keyboard lights that are used to illuminate the keys in the dark. These lights are found just underneath the monitor and shine onto the keyboard, they are not backlights.

Samsung Q1

The Samsung Q1 was one of the world's first ultra-mobile PC when it launched in 2006. Since that time the Q1 has undergone various upgrades and minor modifications with the latest version running on Windows Vista as opposed to XP Tablet Edition. At its core the Q1 is a very small tablet laptop that emphasizes portability above all else. The touchscreen is 7" and runs at a native resolution of 800x480. There is a button that changes the resolution on the fly to 800x600 and 1024x6800 but these simply scale the image instead of increasing the actual resolution. The native resolution is adequate for most tasks and fits standard definition video perfectly.

Alongside the Windows software Samsung includes a bundle of programs suited towards the UMPC experience. One program is an embedded version of Windows that boots quickly and performs only basic multimedia tasks which lets you watch movies and listen to music without fully powering the system.

Samsung does not include a keyboard or mouse built in. Mouse functionality is accomplished through the touch screen, while virtual keyboard software is used for text entry. Scrolling is achieved through two independent scroll buttons. A button-wheel has four programmable buttons that can be used to launch programs or mimic key combinations such as ctrl-alt-delete.

Variations

Samsung Q1 (MFN: NP-Q1-V000)

Celeron M ULV (ultra low voltage) running at 900 Mhz

40GB Hard Drive

512MB RAM

B/G WiFi

Ethernet port

Compact Flash slot

Array mics

Bluetooth 2.0

Samsung Q1 SSD (MFN: NP-Q1-V004)
Exact same as the Q1 except the hard drive is replaced with a solid state version that increases battery life and performance. The price is also much higher.

Samsung Q1b (MFN: NP-Q1B-V000)

30% brighter screen

5 hour battery life (from 3 hours)

Celeron M at 1Ghz

Samsung Q1P (MFN: NP-Q1-F000)

Pentium M CPU at 1GHz

1GB RAM

60 GB hard drive

Windows Vista

In Spring 2007 Samsung released the Q1 Ultra which features a significant redesign and upgrade to the components.

Sony VAIO UX490

The Sony VAIO UX490 is the successor and upgrade to the previous flagship - the UX390. Sony maintains the same overall form factor and sliding design, while upgrading many of the internal components to offer more power and better performance. The two most notable upgrades are to the device's processing speed, and the size of the hard drive. With this Premium UMPC as Sony calls it, they've added extra accessories to the bundle including an extra large capacity battery, and Bluetooth GPS adapter.

Features

1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Solo processor, with 2MB of Cache

48GB solid state hard drive

1GB of RAM

4.5" LCD touchscreen, 1024x600 resolution

Ethernet, WiFi, and Edge wireless connectivity

Full QWERTY keyboard

0.3MP camera on the front, 1.3MP camera on the rear

With the solid state hard drive and large capacity battery Sony estimates battery life between 3 and 7 hours depending on usage. As the UX490 is targeted towards business users, extra security is found through the integrated fingerprint sensor. The sensor lets you map multiple passwords to a fingerprint reading which enables you to work with passwords that must change frequently.

Both A/B/G WiFi and wireless Edge connectivity are included inside the device. Sony's software manages which network to use, as they claim the UX490 will switch between services automatically.

This is the updated version of Asus' initial UMPC release, the Asus R2H.

Sony VAIO UX390

First generation devices were met with general apathy, but companies like Sony are set on trying to make this niche PC category work. A 32GB flash-based hard drive is the biggest addition to the UX390. With a flash-based hard drive there's no moving parts in the entire device which extends battery life (from 2h in the UX50 to 3.5h) and keeps the machine running quiet and cool.

Despite the small size, the UX390 should be able to run any application you throw at it. On the software side it comes installed with Vista Business, as well as Sony's in-house programs. Hardware wise there's a 1.3GHz Intel Core Solo and 1GB of RAM.

Behind the 4.5" touchscreen LCD, with a resolution of 1024x600, is a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. Behind the screen there's a bevy of ports including USB 2.0, headphone and microphone jacks, alongside Bluetooth and EV-DO connectivity.

With the S-XGen Seamless is attempting to resolve 2 main complaints against UMPC handhelds: battery life and 'dumb thumb' that is, typing with your thumbs is a lot more difficult than with your fingers. The S-XGen comes with 8 hours of battery life which puts it in the top of the UMPC pile. There's also a full QWERTY folding keyboard that lets you type like normal.

The technical specifications are suitably impressive for this class. Microsoft's Mobile operating system, and office suite come preinstalled on purchase. Hardware wise the notable specs are 256MB of RAM, and 20GB hard drive. The S-XGen is able to communicate through WiFi, or through cellular networks, as well as wired ethernet connections.
