JBL Studio 180
$419.00
Released September, 2010
The Pros:Grill design is very unique, has a modern-art feel to it. Outer construction is very high quality, feels durable and looks great. Mid frequencies are very clear, details stand out.
The Cons:Non-traditional grill design may be too much for some. Needs a subwoofer to fill the bass range out properly. Highs thin out at the top end, noticeable to audiophiles.
The Studio 180 were announced in September by JBL as part of the Studio 1 line for a fall release along with the complementary center and side channel speakers. The two 40" floorstanding speakers employ a 3-Way design using one 6.5" woofer with lightweight PolyPlas enforced cone and rubber surround, a 4" PolyPlas cone providing the mid frequencies and 1" CMMD Lite dome tweeter for highs.

All components are magnetically shielded to avoid interference when placed near tv screens and monitors. JBL also included in the series a step up from these called the Studio 190, which are 4-1/8" taller and use two woofers per speaker for more powerful bass, which makes sense since the Studio 1 line does not feature a separate subwoofer like the ES line. These speakers also all feature a large bass port in the back to further extend the bass response, and also use gold binding posts.
