Killzone 2

Killzone 2 is a science fiction first person shooter developed by Guerilla Games for the PlayStation 3. It is the third in its line, coming after Killzone, for the PlayStation 2, and Killzone: LIberation, for the PlayStation Portable. The game was announced at the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo so its development period has spanned several years. Killzone 2 is set on the planet Helghan, the homeworld of the Helghast, who invaded the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance colony. This follows after the events of the two previous games, a great strategy to resonate with fans and encourage first time players to buy the previous two games to get the full plot line of the series. Since this is a first person shooter, it is targeted towards a particular portion of the population and is not a game that can be given to just anyone as a present. The recepient has to like first person shooters, and not just games in general. However, it is very popular, with pre-orders of the game rocketing above 1.1 million units in the European sector by itself.

I played the single player demo of this game a few times, and my overall verdict is that it's good, and sometimes even great, but not genre-defining. Let's get it out of the way that the graphics look great. Really really great. Fortunately for me, the wow factor never goes away so I can continually appreciate the great graphics, whereas some people just forget/ignore them after 5-10 minutes.

My fundamental problem with the single player mode is that it is realistic to a fault. You die fast, you can only carry one main weapon, and melee isn't reliable. So what this means is that at any given moment you have very limited options in how you approach a battle. Unlike games such as Call of Duty where you can carry a Sniper Rifle, Assault Rifle, Pistol and insta-kill knife, here you have to choose between the Sniper Rifle and Assault. What this means is that in COD you can switch between long-range fighting, medium-range, and close-range combat very quickly, within a single firefight. However, with KZ2 you have to choose one approach for a particular battle and stick with it. Rushing the enemy isn't really a viable option either because you die so fast.

What ended up happening to me in the demo is that I'd just stay behind cover and methodically kill enemies. That's a fine approach, but when it's the ONLY approach that can be realistically tackled, that becomes a problem. In games like COD or Halo I love rushing enemies with a shotgun and this just doesn't work in the game.

Still looking forward to the game coming out, really interested to see how the multiplayer turns out.
