DYMO DiscPainter

The DYMO DiscPainter is a CD/DVD disc printer that lays down ink directly onto the disk as it’s spinning. In fact, the DiscPainter can print over the entire printable area of a disc, including the inner printable hub to the outer edge. Designs can be created from Photoshop, Illustrator, or the bundled software (Discus for DYMO) and then ‘painted’ on at a speed between 30 seconds to 3 minutes, depending on the quality chosen. Core to the DiscPainter is RadialPrint Technology, which allows the user to watch the action and make specific decisions on how it should occur: type of disc, whether or not the center hub can be printed, and print settings (fast, normal, best). Ink density can also be adjusted to optimize the quality for specific surfaces: matte, glossy, or color.

The Brother P-Touch PT-1280 is budget-friendly, home and office label maker / label printer designed for professional use. Unlike its counterparts in the ‘Simply Stylish’ series, this model isn’t geared for labeling clothes. It does however provide laminated labels up to 12mm wide, in addition to a 15-character display, 6 auto formats, and 5 framing options. Also included is full keyboard (no computer needed), various color options (tape must be purchased separately), and 6 AAA batteries. In general, reviewers warn that the Brother P-Touch PT-1280 can be difficult to master. Though it appears intuitive enough, certain steps must be applied to achieve accurate results.

The Brother PT-2700 label printer that is designed to be used both at a desk and on the go. It is operated by either the provided AC adapter or 8 AA batteries. The main feature of the PT-2700 is the 3 lines 16 character LCD display that has a built in back light. Plus the included tape is indoor-outdoor laminated, meaning the labels are waterproof and kitchen-friendly. Also included are many tape color options, an easy system for adding cartridges, an ergonomic shape good for small hands, a self-contained design with no pesky cords, and a pictograph function for adding symbols to text. Despite being marketed as family-friendly, the Brother P-Touch PT-1090 is known to take awhile to master. Overall it’s an entry-level model recommended for users not quite ready for a professional-grade model.

Brother P-Touch PT-90

The Brother P-Touch PT-90 is an entry-level ‘Simply Stylish’ label maker / label printer released as a more affordable counterpart to the original Brother P-Touch PT-1090. It also features Deco Mode Patterns for making stylish labels that fit well on clothes and other accessories. However, it’s limited to only 8 patterns (versus 12). Regardless, the printer holds onto a typewriter-style keyboard, an easy-view LCD display, and a large symbol library for adding pictography to labels. There are some shortcoming though, as the PT-90 produces only very small writing. Plus it tends to use up too much tape at the end. However, it’s more inexpensive and uses less batteries than its counterpart.
