As the product name suggests, the LaCie 2big Spare Drive is a spare drive for any of the RAID units in LaCie's 2big line. Spare drives are available in capacities of 500 GB, 1 TB, 1.5 TB, and 2 TB, and include drawers. They can be inserted in one of the two bays of the 2big Network, Quadra, Triple, or Dual, to increase storage space or replace a failed drive of equal or lesser capacity. Keeping a spare drive in case of drive failure would enable quick hot-swapping for minimal disruption of workflow. The main unit must be operating in RAID 1 mode, however, for hot-swapping and quick data reconstruction to be possible.
