Dell Inspiron 1525

The Dell Inspiron 1525 released at the beginning of 2008, is a 15.4" laptop that is the successor to the Inspiron 1520 and is intended to be a mainstream laptop for budget-minded people. Compared to the 1520 the 1520 sees a 20% reduction in size and drops around half a pound to come in at 6 pounds, about standard for this price-range and size. From a specifications perspective it's the standard fare with Core 2 Duo processor and integrated graphics - it must be noted that there's no option for discrete graphics cards - with a 1280x800 resolution screen. The standout features for this laptop compared to its contemporaries is the addition of extra multimedia ports including an HDMI, VGA and S-Video output, alongside 2 headphone jacks, 2-megapixel webcam, and an integrated microphone.

Dell XPS M1330

The Dell XPS M1330 is an ultraportable performance laptop that's part of the XPS line of notebooks which focus on power and features. The 13.3" screen is LED backlit based which allows for a slimmer profile. Similar to other laptops in this price range, the M1330 is built on Intel's Santa Rosa platform which includes the Core 2 Duo processor, integrated B/G/N wireless, and Bluetooth. A separate video card, the nVidia GeForce 8400M GS, is available as a configuration option as an upgrade over the standard integrated graphics.

Whether a separate video card is used Dell is including an HDMI output port for connecting the computer to various display units. While no Blu-Ray or HD-DVD configuration exists, with HDMI protected content playback will be supported. Other ports include two USB, one mini-FireWire, and a multicard reader.

Ultraportable notebooks are strictly defined as weighing less than 4 pounds, and with a 4-cell batter the M1330 weighs in at 3.9. If you're willing to sacrifice weight for extra battery life, a 9-cell battery is available as an option that increases the overall weight to the unit to 4.7 pounds.

The Dell XPS 15z is a 15.6'' multimedia notebook computer. In terms of internal components it is almost identical to the XPS 15. The Dell Latitude E6420 is a high-end business laptop and a part of Dell's Latitude E-series. The laptop features a lot of the most recent computer hardware including the second generation of Intel i5 and i7 processors.

The system features many similarities with the more expensive Latitude E6520 and differs mainly in its smaller screen size of 14 inches. The Dell Alienware M14x is a high-end 14" gaming laptop similar to the 11.6" Dell Alienware M11x R3. Dell Inspiron 15R

The Dell Inspiron 15R was released in 2011 as an upgrade from the Inspiron 15R (2010). It changes by adding support for Sandy Bridge Processors, which are 2nd generation Intel Core CPUs with more processing and performance power. The Inspiron 15R also adds USB 3.0 interfaces for accessing USB 3.0 flash drives that are faster than their USB 2.0 predecessors, Bluetooth 3.0 for better Bluetooth connectivity with peripherals, and a high definition web camera that can more accurately capture video. The display is still 15” and with the same 720p resolution capability. However, users now have the option of adding along a third-party AMD or Nvidia graphics card so they can play 3D games with their laptop. The biggest change is that the lid has become removable. Users can remove it and replace it with one of 25 other separately purchased lids of various colors and designs.

The Dell Vostro 3750 is a business laptop released alongside the 3350, 3450, and 3550 laptops. It upgrades from them and previous generation Vostro models by offering an optional 2nd-generation Sandy Bridge Intel Core i7 processor with quad cores. This improved CPU allows users to much more quickly and effectively complete their work, as the typical lag associated with slower 1st-generation laptops has been removed. Plus there is now more memory, and it operates at a faster speed, meaning the laptop can handle many applications at once. Another way in which the 3750 upgrades from its predecessors, in particular the other three aforementioned models, is that it also supports an optional Nvidia GeForce card that performs better than the AMD Radeon on the 3350, 3450, and 3550. This is for business users who work with graphics. Additional features include a high definition web camera for recording high quality videos, and wired and wireless connectivity options. Unfortunately, the 3750 doesn’t offer any integrated 3G or 4G connectivity options.

The Dell Inspiron 13z is an entry-level 13.3" laptop that is meant to improve upon the previous year's model. Its most evident improvement is its aluminum lid and palm rests while also boasting a thinner chassis at just under an inch. Additionally, the 2011 13z boasts Sandy Bridge processor options and USB 3.0 ports over the 2010 model.

The Dell Latitude D530 is a cost sensitive mobile business tool. The design of this unit is directed towards users with simple or basic needs specifically associated with mobile use. Dell Latitude E5500 is the entry model in the Latitude series. Although it is designed to be a cost-effective business tool, it still comes equipped with the essential Latitude features. Such features like the ControlPoint for security, Dell Latitude ON allowing for quick access to email, calendar and Internet and Dell ImageDirect for simplified management of mobile assets. Dell Inspiron 14R

The Dell Inspiron 14R was released in 2011 as an upgrade from the Inspiron 14R (2010). There’s now a removable lid that can be swapped for another of a different color or style; there are 25 from which to choose. Plus there is an option for advanced graphics courtesy of AMD Radeon (HD 6470M or HD 6630M), and the processor has been upgraded to Sandy Bridge, which translates to faster speeds and improved overall performance. Plus the web camera has been boosted to 720p, meaning it can provide much better quality video reception and transmission. The display is still 14” and it still hosts a 1366x768 resolution. The keyboard, however, has been upgraded the Chiclet style, which is more comfortable. Also included are USB 3.0 ports (not on the 2010 edition), an optional Blu-ray player, and Bluetooth 3.0, with which users can use Bluetooth peripherals or transmit content from/to a Bluetooth compatible smartphone.

Dell Latitude XT3

The Dell Latitude XT3 is a convertible tablet PC released as a successor to the XT2. Unlike the sleek and ultra-portable 12” XT2, the 13” XT3 is more like a notebook and therefore less portable. Dell Inspiron 14z

The Dell Inspiron 14z is an entry-level 14" laptop meant to improve upon its previous iteration of the same name. Primarily, the 2011 14z offers a redesigned chassis that's thinner than the previous model and sports an aluminum lid and palm rests rather than plastic. Dell Inspiron M101z

The Dell Inspiron M101z is a business/casual laptop featuring an AMD Athlon II Neo Single or Dual-core CPU, up to 8GB DDR3 SDRAM, and up to a 500GB SATA HDD. As it’s designed for on-the-go individuals, the M101z is restricted to integrated ATI graphics, though it does host SRS Premium Surround Sound in addition to a 1.3MP webcam and an integrated microphone. Critics have noted that the M101z is very similar to the HP dm1z, which also hosts a similar quoted battery life (6-1/2 hours), an 11.6” display, and HDMI ports. The difference though is in price, as critics say the M101z is “pretty steep” compared to its $449 competitor.

The Dell Precision M6500 is Dell’s most powerful business oriented 17? Laptop. It was originally released in 2009, but it’s been upgraded over the years so that it’s more powerful than the average desktop computer. In addition to featuring a large Full HD display for accessing multiple windows of data simultaneously, the Dell M6500 features an extreme edition quad-core processor that works with up to 32GB of RAM to allow business users to literally manage 100 applications at once without experiencing the slightest lag. Mind you, these are its maximum specifications; users can opt for a cheaper configuration if necessary. Regardless of configuration (a DVD player or Blu-ray player; a regular wireless card or a 3G card; or even an optional docking station), the Dell M6500 comes with all the essentials needed to handle business. For instance, it supports every possible peripheral or external device via a bevy of connection ports, meaning there is no limit to what users can connect to it: USB/SD cards, Express Cards, external monitors, external drives, etc.).

Comparison to Dell Precision M4500

The Dell M6500 is an upgrade from the Precision M4500 for many reasons. Though it hosts the same processor and many of the same optional components (graphics card, SSD drive, Blu-ray player, WWAN), the Dell Precision M6500 supports more memory (32GB vs 16GB). Plus it has a much larger display (17" vs 15.6"), and it supports the new USB 3.0 interface standard, which is faster and more efficienct than USB 2.0.

It's design remains largely identical to the E6400 with the same magnesium alloy body but it has been updated with the latest components including Intel Core i7 and LED displays. As usual Dell offers a range of options to suit the buyer's needs, from high performance parts such as solid state drives, high capacity (9 cell) batteries, and up to 8GB of memory, to basic options such as standard hard disk drives and Core i5 processors, the E6410 is suitable for basic business needs and power users looking for a portable desktop replacement. The Dell Vostro V130 is a laptop released in late 2010 as an upgrade from the original Vostro V13. It hosts the same ultra-thin, lightweight and colorful frame, but it hosts an enhanced 13.3” HD LED-backlit display, not to mention a much-needed HDMI port. Also featured is up to an Intel Core i5 CPU, up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and a SATA drive with an optional SSD drive. Unfortunately it inherits the same short-lifespan battery, though it does add Intel “Hyperbaric Cooling” technology, which helps keep the system both cool and quiet. Additional features are all fairly standard for 2010/2011 releases, including Bluetooth 3.0, Gigabit LAN, WiFi, and optional WWLAN.

The Latitude E6410 is Dell's top of the line 15.6'' business laptop. The second iteration of the Latitude E series 15'' laptop brings a new screen aspect ratio of 16:9 which is becoming the norm for laptop screens. The Dell XPS 14 is one of three laptops adds to the almost defunct XPS series in late 2010 as an attempt to ‘reboot’ the brand. The smaller 14” XPS 14 offers a choice of an Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, either a SATA or SDD drive, and an Nvidia Gforce 400M Series GPU. Featured on the base model is a Skype-certified HD webcam, high-fidelity JBL speakers, Gigabit LAN, Wireless N, and a DVD optical drive. However, advanced configuration options are numerous. Users have the option of adding on a Blu-ray drive, a TV tuner, 3G wireless, and more. Critics have said the unit is well built. But they especially appreciate the integrated speakers, as it’s nice to have a Windows-based laptop with quality sound.

Dell Inspiron 15R Alloy Edition

The Dell Inspiron 15R Alloy Edition is a special version of the Inspiron 15R notebook featuring an aluminum finish with a laser-etched wave design. Unfortunately no other designs are offered besides the wave. Regardless, the 15R Alloy Edition is otherwise almost an exact duplicate of the 15R, a laptop released in mid-2010 as an upgrade from the original Inspiron 5. It does offer a few notable enhancements however, including CPU options up to a Core i7, and HDD options up to a larger 750GB. Additional features include integrated Intel graphics or an optional ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650, up to 8GB RAM, and a choice of either 6- or 9-cell batteries.

The Dell XPS 17 is one of three laptops adds to the almost defunct XPS series in late 2010 as an attempt to ‘reboot’ the brand. The full-size XPS 17 offers the largest expansion options up to 16GB RAM, 1280GB SATA, and 256GB SSD. Like its counterparts the laptop relies on an Intel Core i7 CPU in addition to Nvidia graphics and JBL speakers/subwoofer to provide a high-definition entertainment experience to viewers. Also included is 3DTV player support. The unit itself doesn’t support 3D on its screens, but it offers an HDMI v1.4 output for transmitting to a 3D-capable TV. There’s also a full-size keyboard, a big touchpad with separate mouse buttons, and a multitude of expansion options.

The Dell Latitude D430 is the flagship road warrior in the Latitude line-up. The larger XPS 15 provides integrated third-party graphics, hi-fidelity JBL speakers, and a subwoofer—giving it the power necessary to provide high-quality audio/visual output. Also included (even on the base model) is an HDMI v1.4 interface and an included Skype-certified HD web-camera. Like its peers, the XPS 15 can be outfitted with either an Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU, up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a SATA or SSD drive, and either a DVD (included) or blu-ray player. Signature though are the customization options. Anything from a TV tuner to 3G Internet can be tagged along, though it will lead to a significant increase in price.

The Dell Inspiron 1501 is a 15.4'' consumer notebook PC. It moves away from the traditional business styling (inherited by the Latitude line) and move towards a more style design. The 1501 uses AMD components unlike the Intel based Inspiron e1505. The 1501 offers several AMD single core and dual core processor options along with an ATI Express 1150 integrated graphics card. The Dell Latitude XT is the first Tablet PC made by Dell. It is compact and light, serving as both a standard laptop and as a tablet. You convert it by rotating the LCD display on a pivot connnectiion and folding it down onto the keyboard with the screen facing up. This is not a giant laptop but a small business notebook with a 12.1 in. wide format screen which can be used as a slate. You can get it from Dell with the 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo chip in hard disks ranging from 40 to 120 GB. The big question is, can it withstand rough treatment? The generally accepted answer is that it it can take some. It doesn't hold a candle to the XFR say the expert reviewers. Dell's answer for this model is the Road Ready design that includes a magnesium alloy case, shock absorbing materials, and steel hinges instead of plastic. The buzz about this tablet PC is the dual mode digitizer that allows the computer to sense the stylus as it moves over the screen. To simulate the feel of using a pen, the XT pen comes with both hard and soft tips to give one the feel of writing on paper. For the person on the go but not in extreme conditions, the Latitude XT may be your solution.

The Dell Latitude Z is an ultra-thin, portable, and sophisticated laptop released by Dell in 2009 as the first model out of the new Latitude Z series. It features either an Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 (1.4GHz) or SU9600 (1.6GHz) processor, up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and a Solid State Internal Drive up to 64GB (Encrypted). Signature to the Latitude Z is its host of optional features; it can be wirelessly recharged by a $200 magnetic inductive stand, as well as hooked up to a $200 wireless dock for hooking up one’s peripherals. The Dell Latitude 13 is a mid-level compact business laptop. Dell is promoting the Latitude 13 as the world's thinnest 13" commercial client laptop. Though it is not certain, it is thought by insiders that the Latitude 13 will have a ULV processor like Dell's other compact laptop offering, the Vostro 13. This laptop is geared toward the business person more than the average user, as evidenced by features like Broadcom TruManage support. To ensure that the Latitude 13 can be used in the office, this laptop is virtualization-ready, which means that it can become a part of the office network server at will. The Dell Vostro 1015 is one of three entry-level notebooks (Vostro 1014, 1015, and 1088) released in late 2009 for business professionals. The base configuration starts at $429 with a 2.2GHz Celeron processor, but $200 extra can net an Intel Dual Core 2 system with 3GB of RAM and a 320GB SATA HDD. Compared to its peers, the 1015 hosts the largest screen (15.6”), but lacks the 1088’s ATI graphics card. Universal across all three is an improved battery life, enhanced energy consumption with an Energy Star 5.0 certification, and a bevy of color options: black, blue, or deep cherry red. Dell Inspiron 13R

The Dell Inspiron 13R replaces the Inspiron 13. It is available with Intel Core i3 and i5 processors which is a considerable uprgade over the previous Core 2 Duo processors. Along with the new processors, the Intel GMA X3100 is replaced by Intel HD graphics with an optional ATi HD5470 dedicated graphics card upgrade. The screen has also changed from 16:10 format to 16:9 with an upgrade to a 720p WLED display. The 4 pin firewire port have been removed, instead a HDMI output and a eSATA/USB combo port have been added. Both Dell and Intel WiFi card options are still available but the 4 cell and 9 cell battery previously available to the Inspiron 13 have been removed and the 13R is left with only the 6 cell option. The 8 in 1 media card reader have also been reduced to a 7 in 1 media card reader. Fortunately the with all these losses in features, the weight and thickness of the 13R have been reduced, from 4.9lbs to 4.22lbs. Overall the 13R has had many changes some more welcoming than others. It has slimmed down to match the weight and size of it's competitions.

Dell Latitude E5410

The Dell E5410 replaces the E5400 in the Latitude business line. Even though the similar model numbers, the changes made between the two iterations have made the E5410 an entirely different notebook. The E5400 was a budget friendly version of the 14.1'' E6400, but the latest revision means have changed the E54xx line from a 14'' chassis to 13.3''. Essentially it is now the budget friendly version of the 13.3'' E4310. Along with the new form factor, several software and hardware features have been added; this includes Latitude ON, which allows for access to e-mail and calendar functions without booting into the operating system. A new fast response free fall sensor paired with the existing StrikeZone shock absorber to protect the hard drive. The E5410 also features Intel Core i3 and i5 processors and the usual range of hardware options available from Dell. Although it lacks the Tri-metal body of the Latitude E4310 line, the E5410 is a budget friendly alternative for mobile professionals.

Dell Adamo

Dell Adamo, available for purchase from Dell's website in March 2009, is a sleek laptop that many see as an attempt by Dell to replicate the coolness factor of Apple's laptops (surprisingly, it also matches the Mac's price: the Adamo is offered in two models priced at $1,999 and $2,699). Who is this laptop targeted for? Critics are wondering themselves. Many see it as a diversion of Dell's traditional target market who are people who want value, functionality, flexibility, performance, and choice, and have little regard for the coolness factor which, they argue, should be left to its undisputed owner: the Apple Macbooks.

In terms of design, the Adamo is actually thinner than the current Macbook (.65" vs .95", even thicker than the macbook air! .65" vs .75") and lighter than Macbook (4 lb vs 5.5 lb, but heavier than macbook air - 4 lb vs 3 lb) and it is also a unibody aluminum construction (same as mac). It has a razor sharp edge around the monitor, and flat closely spaced blacklit keyboard buttons similar to the mac. Unlike previous dell laptops, this one is minimalist: the usual brand and and regulatory stickers have been removed and the information has been removed to the bottom. It also has a handful of LED lights, as opposed to the wide array of lighting selection offered in other models. Dell also created a custom Windows Vista theme for the system, called Adamo Ice.

It has a 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo U9300 (notably slower than the macbook 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and a little slower than the macbook air which is at 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo). All three laptops (Adamo, Macbook and Macbook air) have 2 GB RAM. This one will have a flash storage disk of 128 GB SSD.

The Dell Vostro 1510 is an out-of-the-box ready to use business tool that has been manufactured to be reliable, convenient and affordable. The Dell Latitude E5510 replaces the E5500 as the entry level Latitude notebook. The biggest change is the move from 15.4'' to 14.6'' chassis. The means the E5510 has a smaller foot print than the E5500. Intel's Core i3/5 processors also replaces the Core 2 Duo processors used in the E5510. A host of features have been added including Latitude ON, a new fast response free fall senor, an extended 3 year warranty with the battery, improved security and systems management system, and mobile broadband options. The E5510 can be considered as the cheaper option to the E6410. This iteration of the 15'' Precision notebook sees the switch from 16:10 ratio display to the increasingly popular (amongst manufacturers) 16:9. Other changes includes the the additional of Intel Core i5/i7 processors replacing the Core 2 Duo processors. What remained was Dell's selection of high resolution displays offering an option for all types of budget, also remained is the Nvidia Quadro FX professional graphics processor for use with 2D and 3D design applications. The Dell Inspiron 17R can be considered as the premium version of the Inspiron 17. With more options in the form of graphics cards, memory and wifi card. In addition to the extra options, an eSATA/USB combo port have to added in place of an USB 2.0 port (now 3X USB2.0). With these small revisions the Inpsiron 17R is thicker and the weight of the Inspiron 17R has increased by 0.3lbs over the Inspiron 17. Windows 7 Home basic and Windows 7 Ultimate (both 64-bit) have been added to the list along side the existing Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional. Many features remains the same with the 900p HD WLED display, Blu-Ray drive option and two 2 W speakers. The Inspiron 17R offers more flexibility than the Inspiron 17 in terms of configurations. None the less, this 17.3'' desktop replacement notebook is still aimed at the budget segment.

The Dell Latitude E6400 XFR is one of the most expensive laptops on the markets, but it is also one of the only ones with ballistic armor protection that is up to military standards (MIL-STD-810F). It is built to withstand blowing dirt and dust, extreme temperatures, pounding rain and accidental drops. The chassis is made out of a PR481 material that is twice as strong as traditional magnesium alloy. The laptop itself uses a PriomoSeal technology to seal it in and protect it from dirt and liquid. Dell has responded to the market demand for customizable laptops by producing the Latitude E6400. This model has nearly unlimited upgrades, with a price to reflect its increase in performance, however the basic or standard model is still designed to be a productive mobile business tool. Standard Latitude E6400 come equipped with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2.26 CPU speed. The 1.0GB of memory may not be sufficient for a demanding business user but the 8.OGB upgrade may be overkill (2GB, 3GB and 4GB are options as well). Graphics performance is supported by Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD with Express Card, while the hard drive features 80GB, 5400 RPM. The standard E6400 does not come equipped with an optical drive, however for an additional $5, a 24X CDRW/DVD with Cyberlink PowerDVD may be purchased. The Dell Studio 17 is a large consumer-targeted laptop. With the potential to be a powerful desktop replacement, if processor and memory options are maxed out, the ldevice includes a arge 17” widescreen LED with a high resolution. Upgraded since its introduction, the Studio 17 now has the 2.8GHz T9600 as its highest CPU option, while memory can expand to 8GB DDR3 1066MHz (up from a 2.5GHz CPU and 4GB max of DDR2 memory running at 667MHz). The Dell Adamo XPS is an extremely thin laptop developed and strategically marketed by Dell. First they set up a teaser website with no information except for a side shot of the laptop. It was then initially revealed on September 9th, 2009 as a press conference where Dell offered only a brief teasing look at the laptop. The Dell Adamo XPS is only 9.99-mm thick, one of the thinnest laptops on the market. The guts of the computer all have to be packed up into the base of the monitor because of the thinness of the device, meaning the keyboard has to be raised at an angle and connected at a hinge to the bottom of the monitor. This brings up logistical questions, such as how to handle the laptop when it is sitting in your lap. The slender form of the Dell Adamo XPS comes with a high price tag, making it a relatively expensive product on the market.

The Dell Vostro 3500 is a mid-range 15.6" laptop aimed at small-business users. The Dell Studio XPS 1340 is a product to be released in 2009. Before the official announcement, specifications and images were leaked, generating buzz about the product. The Dell Studio XPS 1340 has the poor reputation of their predecessor to overcome, the XPS 630 which had a wide range of technical issues that were poorly supported and not always fixed. The time spent advertising and teasing about the Dell Studio XPS 1340 will hopefully give the production team time enough to make sure that the new laptop does not follow in the footsteps of its predecessor.

The Dell Vostro 1088 is one of three entry-level notebooks (Vostro 1014, 1015, and 1088) released in late 2009 for business professionals. It’s outfitted with an Intel Dual Core 2 or Celeron processor, up to 4GB of RAM, and a 320GB SATA HDD. The 1088 is the only one of the three to sport a dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon graphics card, allowing it 512MB of additional RAM strictly for intensive graphics applications. Its screen is 14” and allows for a native resolution of 1366x768, which is enough to support 720p video output in its original format. The Dell Inspiron 15 (1564) is a 15.6'' budget oriented notebook from Dell. It features Intel's Core i3 and i5 processors. Its design has also been altered, moving from the Inspiron 1545 casing to a new casing that shares similar design elements to the popular Dell Studio series. Its list of internal components consists of up to 4Gb of DDR3 ram, up to 500GB hard drive, Intel HD graphics, a 15.6'' WLED back lit display, and a Blu-Ray combo player option. As with the previous generation of Inspirons, the 1564 is not designed to be a high performance machine, but a budget solution for students and users with more basic needs. Dell Latitude D830 is a premium unit with increased specifications separating it from the D530, but trailing the D430 model. This model is essentially the same as the D630, but with a slightly more powerful processer and a larger more graphics dedicated display. The Intel Core 2 Duo processor works with a 2.4 GHz CPU speed, and the graphics are supported by a standard Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 but displayed onto a 15.4” WUXGA UltraSharp. (Step up from the D630 14.1” WXGA) What separates the D830 from lower Latitude models is its connectivity package. Found standard is Intel PRO/Wireless 802.11a/g/Draft-N and Wireless 360 Bluetooth, while Built-in WiFi Catcher increases the laptops network connecting capabilities. Additionally, this model is constructed for mobile abuse, with a magnesium-alloy construction and StrikeZone technology to protect it against bumps and drops. There is also still room for customizable options on the D830, from optical drive to security features like the UPEK finger print reader to help protect user privacy.
