Manufactured Landscapes

Manufactured Landscapes is a 2006 feature length documentary showcasing the work of Canadian artist and photographer Edward Burtynsky. Burtynsky specializes in photographing large-scale "manufactured landscapes" such as quarries, mines, oil refineries, oil fields, and shipyards. He is fascinated by the aesthetics of such man-made environments. The destructive, albeit stunning, photography raises ethical questions concerning man's impact on their environment.

The cover of this DVD caught my attention right away--the photo was taken in a Mine Tailings compound in Sudbury, Ontario. I recognized the orange stream and rock outcrop in the background instantly since I used to work in this particular compound, and have stood in the exact location the picture was taken. When you are inside this compound it is like another planet--perhaps what Mars would look like rather than what Earth feels like.
