Linksys WRT54G

The Linksys WRT54G series of wireless routers, that includes variants: WRT54GS, WRT54GL, and WRTSL54GS, is an extremely popular among computer enthusiasts because of it's ability to run third-party open-source firmware such as DD-WRT and Tomato Firmware as it's firmware source code was released publicly under the GNU GPL. The first version was released in December 2002, but many different versions with hardware/firmware variations have subsequently been released. All feature two external antennas, 4 LAN ports, 1 WAN ports, and 802.11b/g support. The most recent version in the series is the WRT54GL, which returns to a Linux-based firmware, allowing for upgrades from third-party firmwares. It retails for around $65.

Upgraded Third-party firmware

The popularity of this router is largely due to the ability to unlock advanced features, tweak power settings, and view advanced QoS statistics by running third-party firmware. By flashing the firmware, you void all warranties, and likely cannot return the router for any store refund if you inadvertently damage it.

Note: Most WRT54G and WRT54GS models (not WRT54GL) sold in stores right now are the v5.0+ variety running the VxWorks firmware instead of the Linux-based version and cannot be flashed.

Linksys WRT120N

The Linksys WRT120N is an entry-level wireless 802.11n router, or access point designed for users with basic network connectivity needs. This router is not certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance as a Draft 2.0 802.11n product due to its single-stream capabilities. Therefor the WRT120N is limited to a maximum bandwidth of only 150 Mbps when used in 40MHz mode. This router is backwards compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g connections, and includes 4 Ethernet ports for wired connections. In terms of security WPA and WPA2 are fully supported with 128-bit encryption. WiFi Protected Setup mode is also available for those with limited security knowledge. Other features include QoS (Quality of Service) for prioritizing user applications plus parental controls for limiting and monitoring internet usage. The Linksys WRT120N can be configured and maintained through any modern web browser.

There seems to be a flaw in the administration software. If the NAT setting is changed then the unit can fail, adminstration become unavailable (HTTP 404 error) and the reset disabled. Linksys Cisco support knows about this problem but won't consider a recall. Don't buy if you intend to use the Admin screens.

The E1000 wireless N router is part of Linksys' rebranding effort replacing the well known WRT router line with the E series. It is the E series' entry level wireless N product replacing the WRT160N (version 3). In truth, the E1000 and WRT160N (version 3) are identical in terms of hardware (subjected to possible future revisions), the real difference is the included Cisco Connect software which is part of the rebranding effort in simplifying the setup process of home wireless networks. The Cisco Connect software also allows for a separate password protected network just for guests, simplified parental controls and advanced network settings. The E1000 offers single band B/G/N wireless with up to 300Mbps speed and 4 10/100 ethernet ports. As with the WRT160N, the E1000 has Wi-Fi protected setup and WPA/WPA2 security settings. The Linksys EFSP42 is a standard, competent network device with 256kb of printer RAM, 512kb of internal memory for future updates, and the capability to function as both a print server and network hub through 2 Parallel Printer ports and 4 Ethernet ports. The 2 Parallel Printer ports are capable of supporting multiple print jobs from multiple computers in a network and sending them to the shared printers, while Bi-Directional capability allows the printers to send feedback back to the computers through the same network. While this technology has experienced a drop in popularity, there the EFSP42 sees additional usefulness as a device to unite both older printers and newer ones on the same network. As a hub, it also allows users to create a home or work network between multiple computers.
