Olympus VG-120

Olympus' VG-120 is an entry-level point-and-shoot digital camera, and is the first in the 2011 V-series models. It was released at the same time as the VG-130 and VG-140 models, and has totally identical features with a .01" thinner body frame that includes some plastic regions, whereas the other models have full metal casings. The only other differences are in colour availability. Available in grey, silver and red, this camera has 720p video capture, a 14-megapixel sensor and 5x optical zoom. Two useful shooting features are "intelligent auto" that automatically detects which preset scene selection to use, and autofocus tracking which helps keep fast-moving subjects in focus. Another feature is an internal filter program that can apply stylized filters to images or video after they're taken. There are also built-in help guides that appear onscreen if desired. It uses a rechargeable battery and has a card slot for SD and SDHC cards.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W530

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W530 is a low-cost digital camera. This camera's Face Detection feature detects up to eight individual faces and adjusts focus, exposure, and white balance to help deliver crisp portraits. The iAuto mode of the Cyber-shot DSC-W530 recognizes scenes, lighting conditions and faces, and adjusts settings accordingly for clear images. The 2.7 inch LCD display (230K pixels) allows you to compose photos and view photos, as well as view menus. The Cyber-shot DSC-W530's 4x optical zoom lens brings distant subjects closer. This lens is 26mm equivalent wide-angle, which allows for group shots in tight spots. The PHOTOMUSIC feature combines images with music (4 tracks, 5 minutes per track) to produce slide shows with visual effects (Simple, Nostalgic, Active, or Stylish). The Cyber-shot DSC-W530's Sweep Panorama mode allows you to just press the shutter button and sweep the camera in the desired direction for a panoramic capture. When you do this the camera continuously shoots at a high speed, then stitches the images together with automatic position adjustment. This camera differs from the lower cost Cyber-shot DSC-W510 in it has a 14.1 megapixel sensor (instead of the Cyber-shot DSC-W510's 12.1 megapixel sensor, for images with more detail and contrast in up to 13x19" prints) and a high-performance Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens (as opposed to a Sony lens). This model differs from the higher cost Cyber-shot DSC-W560 model in that the Cyber-shot DSC-W560 has a three inch display and 720p HD Movie Mode, which captures video in 1280 x 720 at 30fps (as opposed to the Cyber-shot DSC-W530's 480p AVI movie mode, which captures 640x480 movies at 30fps). There are color options available for the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W530 digital camera.

Olympus' TG-310 is a point-and-shoot digital camera with a mid-range price and some unique features, most of which relate to its durability. These include being waterproof (to 10 meters), shockproof and freezeproof, so Olympus suggests it makes a good companion for trips or vacations. It has a 14-megapixel resolution, 2.7-inch LCD display, and a 3.6x wide-angle optical zoom. Considering that it can be used underwater or in subzero temperatures, this model is outfitted with a tap control that changes options or plays back photos by tapping the top or sides of the camera, more convenient while wearing gloves. Other features include HD video, image stabilization, a 3D image mode, and a filter effect applier for images or movies. Worth noting is that this model's lens is capable of a wider aperture than its more expensive TG-610 counterpart, and this model can also shoot faster in continuous-shooting mode.

The only difference is that it is available in a different range of colours. Its only upgrade over the VG-120 is a full metal casing. Still, all three have the same MSRP. Olympus VR-310

Olympus' VR-310 is a mid-range point-and-shoot digital camera, based on the compact-body 2011 V-series but with a longer (10x) optical zoom. It comes at a higher price point than the 5x V models. Its form factor is slightly thicker than the 5x models but nonetheless stresses portability as a main feature. Other features include HD video recording, a 3" LCD display, automatic scene selection based on manually-selectable presets, and autofocus tracking for moving subjects. This model also features Olympus' standard filter program that applies effects to images or video after they've been taken. The longer zoom means that the VR-310 has a slightly smaller max aperture than the lower VR models, and it is also about 35 grams heavier. The Olympus XZ-1 is a compact, enthusiast-grade camera featuring a combination of a few gimmicks with a multitude of premium-level features. Olympus' VG-130 is an entry-level point-and-shoot digital camera and it has identical features to the VG-120 model with the exception that this one has a full metal body and is available in a different range of colours. Olympus TG-610 is the upgrade counterpart to the similar TG-310, both of which take durability as main priorities. This model is shockproof (it can withstand most bumps or drops), freezeproof to -14 degrees, and waterproof to 10ft. The Olympus FE-4010 is a lower-mid range point-and-shoot digital camera and is almost identical to the model just below it, the FE-4000, and has nearly identical features. The only differences are that the FE-4010 has a slightly enhanced digital image stabilizer, which reduces noise more effectively than that of the FE-4000. The Olympus S711 — also known as the Pearlcoder S711 — is an affordable, compact, and colorful cassette recorder available in two colors: Champagne Gold and Blue. It’s similar to the S701 and S702, but adds along a few convenience-related features. Perhaps the most notable upgrade is the fact that the S711 can be powered by both batteries AND a power outlet. And like its predecessors, this recorder can handle dual speeds (2.4cm/sec & 1.2cm/sec), with the slower speed allowing for up to 180 minutes on an MC-90 tape. Included also with the unit is a built-in microphone that clearly captures audio, as well as a built-in speaker for playback anywhere and anytime. Additional features include fast playback (25%); external jacks for a microphone, earphones, and AC power; and voice activation.

The DS-5000 is a digital voice recorder from Olympus' DS series that is specially designed for professional use. The Olympus WS-400S DNS is an entry-level, battery-operated digital voice recorder that features 1GB of internal memory, which is enough for approximately 272 hours of high-quality recording. Key to the WS-400S is its bundled Dragon Naturally-Speaking (DNS) voice-recognition software, which allows users to transcribe recorded voice files directly to their PC. Other than that, the WS-400S is relatively simple in that it only supports WMA audio formats, it doesn’t feature a rechargeable battery, and it’s only compatible with PC computers. The Olympus WS-500M is a digital voice recorder that comes with 2GB internal flash memory and is available in Pink, Silver and Blue. This entry level offering is similar to the Olympus WS-321M, having the same price but twice the memory and a battery that is rechargeable via USB. Speaking of which there is a flip-up USB connector built in so no cables are needed, just plug and play. The WS-500M records high quality stereo WMA (Windows Media Audio) through an internal stereo microphone while a jack for hooking up an external mic is also included. At highest quality, almost 35 hours of audio can be recorded with the total record time moving up to 555 hours at the lowest rate. 5 storage folders are located in memory each containing up to 200 files and the possibility of uploading 500 songs of either MP3, WMA or WAV format is supported, although the unit only records in WMA format.

Variable Control Voice Actuator, or VCVA, is a battery and memory saving feature which will only engage recording when it senses sound, stopping again when it sense a period of silence. Ideal for students, journalists and even writers and musicians for recording lectures, speeches or ideas. During down time it can be used as an MP3 player and also a USB storage device since any file type can be loaded.
