The Roku Netflix player is a streaming device that connects your TV directly to Netflix through an internet connection. You connect your Netflix account, and it allows you to stream movies on your queue. It can pause and rewind and allows you to rate movies directly from the box. Any movie you've placed in your Instant Queue is immediately available for watching. The Roku can be connected to an older TV or a newer HDTV through RCA, S-video, component video, or HDMI.

Roku Streaming Stick

The Roku Streaming Stick is Roku's attempt at making your Smart TV smarter, without the added box. It connects to your TV through an MHL-enhanced HDMI port. MHL-enhanced HDMI ports are the newly proposed standard for all new TVs. The ports will power any device that's plugged in. This is an interesting choice for Roku as you'll essentially need a new TV to use the streaming stick, so it's hard to see where the advantage comes in. This will appeal to people who want to keep their home theater setups clean, without a lot of extra "boxes", while allowing them to keep up to date on new streaming software that comes out.

Roku's real advantage with the Streaming Stick will come with travelers who want to keep their Hulu and Netflix streams readily available while on the road. The caveat, of course, that hotel TVs will be upgraded to include the MHL-enhanced port. It would be nice to carry around a small USB-thumbdrive-sized device around rather than a set-top box or watching on your laptop.

The Roku Streaming Stick won't be available until the second half of 2012 and should cost between $50 and $100.

Roku 2 XS

The Roku HD-XR is one of two digital media streamers (HD SD, HD-XR) released in October 2009 as competitors to the original Roku HD. The HD-XR is an immediate step-up from the HD in that it includes superior 802.11 Draft N Wi-Fi connectivity. Like its predecessor, the XR easily connects to a television; offers pause, rewind, and play functions; and can hookup to the Internet wired or wirelessly. Another notable addition is a USB port, which upon its release was rendered absolutely useless. Users had to wait for a firmware upgrade that allowed for video playback from UMS devices like hard drives and flash drives. Additional features include versatile connectivity options; MLB, Netflix, and Amazon support; and the potential for Facebook/Twitter/MSNBC/etc. streaming with the release of the Roku Channel Store.

The Roku XD is one of three wireless, high-definition media streamers (HD, XD, XDS) released in Fall 2010. Functioning as the top unit in the Roku series, the XDS offers full 1080p high-definition video processing in addition to Dual-Band Wireless N connectivity and unlimited streaming from one of 75 Roku channels that include Netflix and Pandora, to name a few. Unlike the HD and XD, the XDS also incorporates component video / optical audio outputs, and a USB port for accessing flashdrives. The SD is the base model in the group, as it trades in Component, S-Video, and HDMI connections in favor of a single 480i composite video interface port. The result is a much less versatile unit, albeit at a more budget-friendly price. Like its peers, it can connect via 802.11b/g WiFi or 10/100 Ethernet, after-which users can stream content from the Internet directly onto a composite-compliant device.
