The Sansa Clip is a bare bones audio player by SanDisk that continues the memory maker's tradition for releasing media players that compete in features and quality, but at a lower cost. This approach has made SanDisk the number two company, after Apple, in the media player industry. True to its namesake, the Sansa Clip comes with an integrated clip for attaching the player to your clothes. The small weight and size are intended to make the Clip less intrusive during a workout.

Despite its small size SanDisk has included a number of extra features that distinguish it from its main competition, the iPod Shuffle and Creative Zen Stone. Most notably is the inclusion of the 4-line OLED screen that lets you browse through your collection and toggle settings from the player itself. Alongside the radio functionality is the ability to record FM broadcasts, and record your voice through the integrated microphone. All recordings are saved in the WAV file format.

On the format side the standard formats are supported, but no support for some of the less popular such as Ogg Vorbis. Audible support for audio books, and protected WMA support are both notable features of the Clip. The Clip integrates with Rhapsody's subscription service and lets you mark songs so they are automatically purchased next time you sync the player with your computer.

The Sansa Fuze is a flash-based mp3 player that can also play video and has an FM tuner for radio. The player fits in the Sansa line between the simpler Sansa Clip and more sophisticated Sansa View. One of its most impressive features is its 24 hour battery life, although you will only get the 5 hours on video playback. The SanDisk Sansa View is the update to the critically acclaimed Sansa E200 Series line of flash based media players. Falling squarely in direct competition with the iPod Nano the Sansa View offers a similar screen size, resolution and format playback. SanDisk distinguishes the Sansa View with a larger screen, more features, much higher capacity, and compatibility with more formats.

Looking at the View it's easy to see that it shares a lot with the iPod Nano in terms of overall look. The big circle on the front of the player is a mechanical scroll wheel reminiscent of the wheel found on first generation iPods. Sansa takes design cues from later generation iPods as well, and makes the wheel clickable for explicit music controls such as play and pause. The screen on the Sansa is the same resolution as the Nano's, 320x240, but is actually the same size as the iPod Classic's screen, 2.4 inches.

At 32GB of flash memory the View has one of the highest storage capacities in this level of players. The amount of storage can be further increased through the player's integrated MicroSD slot. The player is compatible with Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) cards that max out at 16GB making total possible storage come in at 48GB. Photos, music and video can all be stored and played on the View with the most popular file formats supported.

For video playback MPEG4, WMV, and h.264 formats are all supported at a full 30 frames per second. While the iPod has iTunes, the View works with subscription based services such as Napster and Rhapsody. Image files are limited to JPEG. SanDisk has stated they'll update the firmware to support new formats over time. Photos and videos can be viewed with the player in the normal upright position, or in landscape mode for widescreen viewing.

Other features that set the Sansa View apart from the Nano are the FM tuner with 20 presents, and an integrated voice recorder. SanDisk is rates the battery life as offering 30 hours of continuous audio playback, and 6 hours of video.

The Sansa Connect is a Wi-Fi music player by SanDisk who teamed up with Yahoo to offer a media player that syncs up with Yahoo Music and other internet radio stations. The media player can connect to any wireless network and stream music or photos. The player also syncs up with Flickr so you can view your photos on-the-go. You can also expand the 4GB memory size with a MusicSD card.

SanDisk has been trying to get a piece of the iPod pie since the introduction of their Sansa series, although the response has been lukewarm at best. By teaming up with Yahoo, the two companies have found a way to compete against Microsoft's Zune and ostensibly, Apple's iPod. This player is very sensitive to the adoption of Wi-Fi networks so the market is currently pretty small, although this is set to grown in the next year.

The Sansa e280 is one of many mid-range flash MP3 players once produced by SanDisk. The device is part of the e200 line, and is virtually identical to the e250, except that it contains 8GB of storage, and so can hold up to 2000 songs, while featuring a microSD slot for expanded capacity. It also plays photo slideshows and videos on its 1.8" TFT screen. The player has good battery life of up to 20 hours with a replaceable lithium-ion battery, and is compatible with a number of digital music stores and subscription services that support PlaysForSure technology. The e280 also features an FM tuner and live radio recording, as well as voice recording. Although now replaced by newer models, the e280 packed a long list of features that made it a worthy, lower-priced competitor to the iPod Nano.

Shaking the toy-like device makes it skip to a randomly selected track, while turning the bottom band skips to the next track. Ther player features a built-in speaker and two headphone jacks for sharing music with friends. A 1GB SD memory card is included, enough for about 250 songs, but can be replaced with higher-capacity cards for more storage. Lacking a screen, the Sansa Shaker doesn't support photo or video playback, and also lacks an FM tuner, supporting only MP3 audio. Battery life is also fairly poor, at 10 hours with one AAA battery.
