Mass Effect

Mass Effect is a new RPG from BioWare who developed the critically acclaimed Star Wars: Knights of Old Republic games, and Jade Empire. The game takes place in a sci-fi world where space exploration is common and robots, aliens and humans comingle. The action is split into three main modes: conversations with other characters, exploration around the galaxy, and combat.

Details

BioWare focuses a lot of energy on the conversation side of the game introducing a new form of dialog progression that moves away from requiring copious amounts of text and instead is more emotion base. Every character is fully voiced, and the player simply chooses a general kind of reaction with the actors fleshing out the reaction with the proper animations and voice.

Exploration is further divided into two stages, one is the galactic map where you can choose to pilot your ship, the Normandy, to hundreds of different planets. Once a planet is selected you move into the second form of exploration which involves a combination of driving and walking around on the planet's surface.

Combat is a hybrid between real-time action, and turn-based strategy. The flow of the combat is real time where you control a single character and aim their shots, perform attacks and execute abilities. At any time you can pause the action to take a more strategic approach and queue up commands to the entire party.

Being an RPG, character development and stat progression plays a large part with all of the characters able to gain new abilities, weapons and armor. All the weapons and armor you equip are visible in real-time during the game.

This game looks so good. I'm thinking a game of the year is coming for it. I can't believe some people are saying it is just Kotor witth better graphics! It's not even Star Wars!

I agree. After watching the E3 demonstration it's one of my most anticipated games this year. The voice acting is incredible. I like the combination of shooter/RPG combat mechanics. And you know the story is going to be something worthwhile. It looks like BioWare is putting a lot of heart and soul into this game, and considering their track record that is worth being hyped for.

This game is sweet. I borrowed it and played it for an hour, and I intend on buying it the next time I"m at a store. The inventory system is confusing, but I think once I learn it better, it will be very useful and better than the inventory of KOTR. I'm excited to finish this.

I just beat this game, and I have to say it's one of the best I've ever played. This game isn't without faults, and after 25 hours they get quite annoying. But the pure achievement of this game and the experience it offers is so compelling as to overshadow any quibbles. It captures the feel of an 80s space opera PERFECTLY and then actually makes you feel like you have control and influence in this world. They achieve this through a consistent atmosphere, a meticulous attention to detail, and compelling characters.

This is the first game that I've played that when I'm dealing with the characters I don't think about what I should say to get me X game reward, or what do the designers want me to say. Instead I think about the character I'm interacting with, our previous interactions... I start treating them like a character and not just a game mechanic. And when you start having to interact with characters in this method you start building an emotional engagement with the experience and it works wonders.

If you can immerse yourself in the experience then there's really nothing quite like this game. However, if you can't suspend your disbelief then the more annoying aspects of the game will start growing and wear on your patience until you hate the whole thing. I think that's why it's a love it or hate it kind of game, and those who love it REALLY love it.

Fortunately for me, I love it.

I mostly agree with Omar. (I saw you played it for at least 5 hours straight on Monday). I haven't beat it yet, but I'll add this:
Vehicle driving is confusing. It takes too long to get used to, and there's a glitch/flaw. Enemies only shoot at the front of your vehicle, so if you hide that part behind a rock/etc. you are invincible. It's also a pain in the ass to turn around quickly. The other issue is that some of the plot is kinda cheesy. A plant that can mind control, clone and regenerate stuff, telepathically communicate and make deals with others, have information that is 50,000 years old, and that attempts to take over a planet is kinda lame.

A little harsh on vehicle driving. Its much better after you get more used to it, and learn how to zoom in.
