Roku Streaming Stick

The Roku Streaming Stick is Roku's attempt at making your Smart TV smarter, without the added box. It connects to your TV through an MHL-enhanced HDMI port. MHL-enhanced HDMI ports are the newly proposed standard for all new TVs. The ports will power any device that's plugged in. This is an interesting choice for Roku as you'll essentially need a new TV to use the streaming stick, so it's hard to see where the advantage comes in. This will appeal to people who want to keep their home theater setups clean, without a lot of extra "boxes", while allowing them to keep up to date on new streaming software that comes out.

Roku's real advantage with the Streaming Stick will come with travelers who want to keep their Hulu and Netflix streams readily available while on the road. The caveat, of course, that hotel TVs will be upgraded to include the MHL-enhanced port. It would be nice to carry around a small USB-thumbdrive-sized device around rather than a set-top box or watching on your laptop.

The Roku Streaming Stick won't be available until the second half of 2012 and should cost between $50 and $100.

Ubuntu TV is a software platform developed by Canonical Ltd. (a commercializing partner of the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution). Ubuntu TV runs on Smart TVs and provides an enhanced viewing experience allowing you to search, browse and navigate online, personal, and live TV content. It was announced at CES 2012 in Las Vegas and is a competitor to Google TV and the upcoming Apple iTV. To date, no specific deals with TV manufacturers have been announced.

Google TV is a software platform that combines the web experience on your TV. It was announced on May 20th, 2010 and is found integrated in certain Sony TVs and standalone Logitech products. It is built on Android (Google's mobile operating system), and, because of this, will run any Android app from the marketplace. Google is attempting to make finding video content easier while also adding the ability to personalize how you organize such content. Google TV 2.0 was released October 28, 2011 and features the Honeycomb build of Android 3.1. It's interface has undergone a significant overhaul, however it still lacks access to much of the available online content. It will interface directly with Dish Network DVRs only, allowing you to search and record to your DVR directly from the Google TV interface.

Apple TV is a digital media receiver that plays digital audio and video either streamed or downloaded from a networked Mac or PC running iTunes or from the iTunes Store directly. Synchronization and Streaming

Syncing is accomplished in a similar fashion to iPods, select the kind of content you want to sync with the Apple TV (newly purchased, favourites, etc) and the system will fill up its hard drive automatically. If the hard drive is full or the content hasn't been synced to the Apple TV you can stream the content to watch or listen in real time.

Take 2

Take 2 is the new software upgraded announced at Macworld 2008 on January 15th, 2008 that removes the restriction of a Mac or PC running iTunes to use the Apple TV. It can now operate as a standalone box that can both stream and download media content from the iTunes online store. At the same time, the iTunes store has been upgraded to allow for movie rentals (including HD movies) to both iTunes running on a computer or to the Apple TV directly. Other upgrades in the Take 2 firmware upgrade include the ability to stream YouTube video directly from the Apple TV user-interface.

Media Playback

While the name of the device is Apple TV, there is more than video that is supported. All the media content that is stored in your iTunes library, including music videos, music, photos, and podcasts can be played back. Audio/Visual playback is accomplished through one of two means, either through HDMI (cables sold separately) or through component output (cables sold separately). Optical out is supported for 5.1 surround sound. All media playback is limited to formats that are officially supported by iTunes, though there are hacks appearing on the Internet that open up the Apple TV to play a wide variety of alternative file types.

Announced and launched immediately on November 3rd 2008, the WD TV HD media player is Western Digital's first foray into consumer electronics. The XtreamerPro is a low cost media streamer offering 1080p HD playback. With 7.1 channel HD audio, the Xtreamer Pro is also capable of high-quality sound for movies as well as music. Though this media streamer has support for 4TB capacity while the Prodigy model is only capable of 3TB, this model has generally lower grade features. For example, this model only has USB 2.0, while the Prodigy is equipped with USB 3.0, for faster data transfers. The HP MediaSmart Server, when connected to your home network, will make automated backups of all of your computers, share files with everyone on your network, and make those same available from any Internet connected computer. It features a small enclosure, with ports, connectivity, and included software optimized to operate as a home network media server. The HP MediaSmart Server does not include a RAID option natively. However, it does have an alternative to ensure redundancy called "folder duplication". Essentially, any folder can be duplicated to any other drive (internal or external) of the user's choosing. HP claims this to be superior to RAID since it gives the user more control on what you back up.

The Xtreamer is very similar to Western Digital's WDTV, only adding the lacking features of it. This little device can play almost any file format of audio, video and image. Two USB ports allow connecting any hard drive or pendrive with contents, which the unit organizes to browse easily.

At 99€ it's appealing to almost everyone, except for hi-fi purists, but this little machine can compete with several high-end devices which cost 4 times its price.

It is claimed that it can play H.264, Matroska MKV, MP4 and all kind of DivX formats as well as VOBs, very useful to play DVDs. Of course, MP3, WMA, OGG and FLAC are supported, but also AAC, DTS and Dolby Digital encoded formats are. No Blu-Ray disc image support, though.

The unit allows HDMI (1080p) video and digital audio. It can process DTS, Dolby Digital, TrueHD and Digital Plus, DTS-HD MA and MR to downmix audio flows to a standard low-end hifi system.

Includes an Ethernet port and an optional (free bonus at the moment) USB 802.11n antenna to provide Internet access, thus opening to several web services such as Picasa, Youtube, Jamendo, CNN, iPodCast, Yahoo! Weather and several others, that can be increased easily by upgrades.

Being an open architecture, it can also be am open window to developers who wish to customise the platform.

Like its counterpart, the NeoTV 350 can playback Blu-ray discs from an external USB player in full 1080p, 24fps. Also featured is standard 10/100 Ethernet connectivity, SD/MMC/XD/Memory Stick expansion, and UPnP AV and DLNA server functionality. Unfortunately the Netgear NTV350 doesn’t include a Netflix client, though it is BDA certified, YouTube compliant, and Internet Radio compatible. Most notable improvements include the addition of HDMI and optical audio outputs, 1080p resolution support, LAN connectivity and MAC support. It can be connected into your existing network with the LAN port or directly connected to a PC, MAC or USB device with one of the USB ports to enjoy video, audio and photo files. There is also an optional USB-WiFi adaptor that can be purchased for $69.99. The DVD style interface makes it easy to browse through content with the included remote control. Connectivity options include HDMI, component and composite video outputs with stereo and optical Toslink audio output. The Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ HD comes with either a 500 GB FreeAgent Go hard drive as a "Media Player Solution" or no hard drive as a "Media Player Only" for $289.99 and $149.99 respectively.

The Asus EeeMedia EM0501 is a media streamer released as a counterpart to the Eee Box series. It differs from its peers by incorporating an S5PV210 800MHz Samsung ARM processor, 512MB of RAM, and a 2.5” SATA drive bay. Plus it incorporates Ethernet connectivity and a media remote control. It’s essentially a high-definition media center designed for viewing photos, music playing, and watching 1080p videos in various formats, such as MPEG1/4, H.264, WMV, VC-!, DivX, Xvid, COB, and MKV. There is some dispute in regards to WiFi, as Engadget asserted that the EM0501 doesn’t include it, but other reviewers claimed otherwise.
