Sling Media Slingbox Solo

The Slingbox Solo by Sling Media is a place shifting box that sits between a single video device and your television, and lets you stream the output to your computer anywhere around the world. Sling puts the Solo in the middle of its lineup with fewer features and lower price than the Slingbox Pro, and more capabilities and higher price than the Slingbox AV. While the Pro box can control multiple devices at one time, the Solo is limited to one device and one client, explaining its name. Upgrades from the AV version come in the form of supporting HD content, and pass through outputs to your television.

Installation happens on two ends. The Solo device itself gets placed in your home theater setup and connects directly to a video source like a DVD player, TiVo box, or cable set top box. You can also connect the Solo to your television so you can watch your shows like normal when sitting on your couch. The Solo needs to be connected to your local network through its integrated ethernet port, there is no integrated WiFi. On the receiving end you install the Slingbox software on all the devices you want to stream content to.

While the Slingbox line of devices aren't the only game in town when it comes to place shifting, they have developed a loyal following due to the number of supported devices. Th same software is used no matter which Slingbox device you go with. Macs, Windows, Windows Mobile smartphones all have available software to receive Slingbox streams. The desktop software is included with the device itself, but extra software for smartphones needs to be purchased from Slingbox.

The Solo is limited to receiving content from one device, and streaming content to one client. If you want to connect multiple computers and set top boxes you need to buy multiple Solos, or pickup a Slingbox Pro (or one of its competitors). The Solo also monopolizes the source its reading from, that is the local television will be forced to watch whatever the Solo is watching and vice versa.

The MG-350HD can also connect to your computer through an ethernet port, or through 802.11b/g wi-fi. The hard drive can be controlled through buttons on the casing, or with the provided remote. The Digital Entertainer Express EVA9100 also allows connectivity with devices such as USB flash drives and iPods. This makes it easy to play your personal files in the living room, for all to hear. That the EVA9100 is made for the home setting is obvious with the "Follow Me" feature. This feature makes it so that if you have more than one Digital Entertainer Express EVA9100 module, you can pause a song or video in one room and continue it in the next room. This is a good feature for something like cleaning the house, where you go from room to room but want the tunes to continue. The one thing not included in the box of the Netgear Digital Entertainer Express EVA9100 is the HDMI cable.

The D-Link DPG-1200 is a media streamer designed to play different media fron the PC to the TV. It works in wired or wireless mode and comes with its own remote that controls the mouse function of the PC as well as the TV. This allows the user to have the PC in a different room from the TV. There are some drawbacks however. The DPG-1200 works only with PC's running Windows, so no Macs. One reviewer found that when used in wireless mode, signal quality suffered. The reviewer found the best results with static media like a web page, slides or photos.While the concept is good, one reviewer says the DPG-1200 is "more like a remote desktop projector for your PC."

The Internet streaming is limited to certain services such as XM Radio, FOX Sports, MovieLink, or Vongo. It also brings Vista Media Center to a TV, meaning that if configured correctly the user can pause/record live TV, watch recorded or downloaded media, and watch live HDTV through a computer's HDTV tuner. It supports wireless 802.11a/b/g/n and has an ethernet port. It does however, require a Samsung HDTV that supports CEC automation, which was new to Samsungs 2008 HDTVs. The Uebo M200 is a budget-friendly SD media streamer that functions as both a media streamer and a network-attached storage device. By itself, the M200 functions as a standard streamer capable of accessing and playing a variety of media formats from a variety of different sources, including memory cards, USB devices, the Internet, etc. However, with the addition of a 3.5” SATA HDD, the M200 transforms into a NAS / Bittorrent client; plus it hosts standard video connections (HD, NTSC, PAL) and is WiFi ready (dongle required). Its one limiting factor though is complexity, in that many tests (especially those at Engadget) have reported having difficulty using the Bittorrent and UpnP functions due to the M200’s over-complex menu system.

The Hantech Markus 800 HD is a high definition digital media player that is considered one of the most “aesthetically appealing media players” on the market. Enclosed in a black plastic case and utilizing a 2.0” LCD for displaying information, the 800 HD is cited as beating its competitor, the DviCo M-6500a, in both aesthetics and usability. However, it does not support HDMI 1.3, and although it can handle full 1080p HDMI playback with its Sigma processor, critics note decreased performance and lower bit rates. Nonetheless, the Markus 800 HD features two USB 2.0 ports, 480i/480p/720p/1080i/1080p HDMI compatibility, and the ability to play over 15 different video formats including MPEG, xVid, DivX, WMV, and AVI. In conclusion, critics remark that the Hantech Markus 800 HD is a viable option for consumers seeking standard definition for 720p HS playback, but not so great an option for those seeking quality full 1080p playback.

The D-Link DSM-510 is a high definition media player said to wirelessly stream video, music, photos and online media to a home entertainment system from a PC. It's the little brother to the DSM-520 and uses wired and wireless connectivity. Reviewers have found some bugs, one being that the 510 relies on the PC to transcode video files. That calls for a heftier PC and is not a problem with the 520. Priced at about $30 less than the 520, you may want to look at it or a competitor before buying.

The D-Link DSM-750 is a Wireless N HD Media Center Extender. The manufacturer claims that you can enjoy the Windows Media Center experience on any tv from the Windows Vista premium or ultimate PC. The 750 has Dualband Draft N Wi-Fi that lets you stream HD Video from a PC to a HDTV. The general consensus about the 750 is disappointing. Reviewers find that it works OK as a Vista Media Extender but performs inconsistently with non-Media Center media. Rob Beschizza's review on BB Gadgets says, "It's a media extender, see, which "extends" the media center application from a Vista PC to your TV set. When it works good, it's magic: your TV set acts almost as a monitor for a distant PC in another room, 1,080 lines of beauty piped over 5Ghz. The problem is that it's inconsistent and somewhat cranky, and you'll often wonder if the files wouldn't stream just as happily without Microsoft's little ecosystem providing directions." So while it does extend the media center experience, that does not seem to overcome its limitations.

The Mvix MV-4000u is a digital multimedia center that can render dozens of video, audio, and picture formats. Defined as a base model, the MV-4000u does not offer networking or wireless capabilities. Critics do cite though that the 4000u includes more features and file format capabilities than its less expensive competitor, the Vizo Milano. It must also be noted that the MV-4000u does not come with an installed hard drive, therefore requiring users to purchase a 3.5” IDE drive. The MV-4000u, however, feature an integrated media player, video/audio drivers and codecs, and USB 2.0 backwards compatibility. The Media Gate MG-35NDAS is a high performance DMA (Digital Media Adapter) or media streaming device when combined with an internal 3.5" hard drive. The MG-35NDAS is rather low-end but is adorned with plenty of extra features and accessories. It provides support for an optional internal IDE hard drive up to 750GB for storing a plethora of digital entertainment. It connects directly to a Television and allows wireless streaming of DVD movies, music and photos from a locally networked PC or off the internal hard drive. Supported file formats include: Movie: MPEG 1, 2, 4 (MPG, MPEG, AVI, M2V, DAT, VOB, etc) , XviD (Except GMC, Qpel option applied); Music: MP3, OGG Vorbis, WMA; and Photo: JPG,BMP, GIF, PNG. Rear panel inputs and outputs include: composite, S-video, and component video outputs as well as stereo L/R, optical/coaxial digital audio, analog 5.1 channel outputs. The device also includes a wireless antenna for 802.11g wireless streaming support.
