Microsoft extends 360 warranty to 3 years

Red Ring of Death (RROD), super loud fans, DREs. The hardware problems that the 360 has received this generation have already become popular Internet memes as common knowledge. More seriously, there have been thousands of angry gamers who have had to get their console replaced, sometimes they had to go through the repair process multiple times.

The 360 launched with a 90 day warranty, but Microsoft extended that to a full one year matching Sony and Nintendo's warranty periods. Now Microsoft is offering a retroactive 3 year warranty on ALL 360s. This means if you had to pay to get your 360 repaired before, you'll get a refund. This move is done to acknowledge the very real problems with the hardware and placate the people who have been sitting on the fence about the console worried about losing it.

Microsoft is reporting that this will cost them over $1BILLION over the next few years. Well, maybe if they made reliable hardware in the first place they wouldn't have this problem.

I agree, this I will be surprised if they will be able to counter Sony's Price Drop with a price drop of their own with this. Though seriously it it about time. Over a year and half, Microsoft should have done something like this at launch. My cousins are on their FIFTH Xbox 360.

Good thing they announced this warranty as my 2nd 360 just got the Red Ring of Death. It actually looks exactly like that picture, though the red is more noticeable. Now my question is whether or not I should wait for the new 65nm chips to start shipping or if they'll replace old models with old models, so it doesn't matter if I wait. Ah well, now more time to play my Wii.

Your cousins play way too many Video games. There is a way to fix it yourself, you just have to spray some cooling thing on some part of the 360. Try Googling it.

ya I know there's a way to fix the console myself, but when I fall under the 3 year warranty why would I do that? I'll just replace it with another console and get the warranty extended another 3 years for free. I'm actually pretty happy my Xbox broke.

No my cousins don't play to many video games! They are only allowed to play for an hour each day. My friend got the RRoD.He just unplugged it and plugged it back in and it worked perfectly.
