Motorola Charm

Released August, 2010

Product Shot 1 The Pros:WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity. FM tuner. Physical qwerty keyboard.

The Cons:Less usable (smaller QVGA display) / less powerful than the larger majority of oversized devices. Android skin "Motoblur" will make OS updates much more delayed, much less frequent.

The Motorola Charm is an Android-powered, candybar smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard released through T-Mobile in summer 2010. It’s the first Android 2.1 (Éclair) phone to run alongside Motorola’s Motoblur (UI 1.5), and it’s the first of its type to employ a “backtrack” form factor with a touchpad mounted on the backside of the phone.

The improved Motoblur interface brings with it improved social-networking integration (Facebook Life, Twitter Retweet) and access to the Android Market Place (which was not offered on the Kin). Critics especially hail Motorola’s choice to unroll on the T-Mobile network, as their HSPA+ 3G services were getting ready at the time (2010) to cover more than 100 major markets. One limiting factor though is the small 2.8” QVGA display like the FlipOut, though it too offers multitouch capabilities. It retails for $269.99 without contract (and presumably unlocked).

dom: #motorola_charm Androidandme.com reported that the TI OMAP3410 CPU includes the dedicated PowerVR SGX graphics core, but I checked at TI, and they don't list this feature (it is included in OMAP3420 and upward). Let's see if Motorola took pains to include a discrete graphics core externally from the CPU.... but I doubt it. Jul 13, 10
