Motorola Droid Devour (Calgary)

$100.00 Released May, 2010

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Slide out QWERTY keyboard. WiFi. Runs the Android open source operating system / platform.

The Cons:Like with the Pixi / Pre, etc. the Droid is only $50 more for a much better phone - improved processor, display, newer version of Android. Smaller, lower resolution display than the Droid. Lower resolution camera than the Droid.

The Motorola Droid Devour (development name "Calgary") is a slider smartphone developed by Motorola and released into the Verizon Wireless network in 2010. Unlike the Motorola Droid, the Droid Devour features a lower-resolution screen, but it does maintain its peer’s QWERTY keyboard.

Product Shot 2 It’s based on the Android 1.6 operating system, but it also incorporates Motorola’s MotoBLUR interface, allowing users to sync all their social-networking data without having to login or open separate applications. Unfortunately, the Devour is limited to the slower CDMA/EVDO networks for voice and data transmissions; plus, it doesn’t include a SIM card slot, making it especially unfriendly for global travelers. Additional features include built-in GPS and Wi-Fi connectivity, a 3MP camera, and microSD memory expansion.

great input devices - optical trackpad is top notch, better keyboard than the Droid

quality aluminum enclosure with amazing sliding mechanism

features the latest 'lower end' Qualcomm MSM7627 (same as in the Palm Pixi Plus) - snappy performance compared to older Android phones (600MHz app core + 400MHz modem core + 200MHz h/w accelerated OpenGL 3D core)

lower resolution camera than the Droid

locked into the same data plan there is very little reason to go for a gimped phone such as this over a true 'higher end' smart phone such as the full Droid

  • 2

actually the same size as the Droid, despite looking smaller, having a smaller display

  • 2

comes with the older Android 1.6 when 2.1 is out and loaded onto many new phones (will probably be updated sometime in the future)

  • 2

recessed headphone jack blocks thicker headphone plugs

  • 1

    fat and bulky
