Nearly 15 years have passed since the original broadcast of MTV's unplugged set, and now it is finally available on video for the first time. The DVD features the entire, unedited performance and the edited broadcast version--all in Dolby stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound. The cd version was released in 1994 (soon after Cobain's death), and went on to become Nirvana's second best selling cd of all time. As an extra bonus to the DVD, a 14-minute interview segment called Bare Witness produced by MTV focuses on those involved in the producing and taping of the set. Taped just months before Cobain's death, Unplugged in NY is both startingly raw and disturbingly planned, with the band playing amongst candles and stargazer lillies--more than a few people noted it seemed like a funeral.

Absinthe Films has produced another very high quality snowboarding film. “Optimistic?” is 45mins of amazing riding and great filmmaking. The visuals are absolutely mesmerizing, particularly during the big mountain riding segments (which make up the majority of the DVD). The soundtrack is great and features TV on the Radio, Babyshambles, SiverSun Pickups, Von Bondies, and Busta Rhymes to name a few. “ Included in the bonus features is an impressive (and hilarious) performance by Mikey LeBlanc as “The Tobogganist”. Mikey straps snowboard bindings on a standard wooden toboggan and proceeds to lay out some impressive rail slides, airs, and carving manoeuvres through trees.

The 20th anniversary edition of 1982's Tron was recently released, and celebrates the neon-glow of the Mark Messier-helmeted peons with the high-tech remastering they deserve.

The surprising truth about Disney's 1982 computer-game fantasy is that it's still visually impressive (though technologically quaint by later high-definition standards) and a lot of fun. It's about a computer wizard named Flynn (Jeff Bridges) who is digitally broken down into a data stream by a villainous software pirate (David Warner) and reconstituted into the internal, 3-D graphical world of computers. It is there, in the blazingly colorful, geometrically intense landscapes of cyberspace, that Flynn joins forces with Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) to outmaneuver the Master Control program that holds them captive in the equivalent of a gigantic, infinitely challenging computer game. Disney's wizards used a variety of cinematic techniques and early-'80s state-of-the-art computer-generated graphics to accomplish their dynamic visual goals, and the result was a milestone in cyberentertainment, catering to technogeeks while providing a dazzling adventure for hackers and nonhackers alike. Appearing just in time to celebrate the nascent cyberpunk movement in science fiction, Tron received a decidedly mixed reaction when originally released, but has since become a high-tech favorite and a landmark in special effects, with a loyal following of fans. Terrific cast and subtle direction from Martin makes for an emotional journey in Canada's high arctic. I was quite impressed with the casting, especially the lead Inuit girl. In many ways, the partnership of Pepper and the young Innu girl elevate this film above the standard plot.Its unexpected poignancy in dealing with spiritual matters and the theme of redemption of Charlie Halliday's special blend of charm and arrogance deserves special mention.It would have been easy for this film to degenerate into melodrama, but the cast and director continue striving towards offering the audience mature and interesting choices.Score was a titch "movie-lite", but that is a small quibble. Kudos to entire production for bringing this astonishing vision to fruition.

Zoolander: Modeling, to me, isn't just about being good-looking or having a lot of fun and being really, really good looking. The calendar was great because it gave people a chance to see a side of my versatility. The original Greek word for model means "misshapen ball of clay" and I try to think about that every time I get in front of a camera.

Zoolander: Who am I? I don't know. I guess I have a lot of things to ponder.

Derek Zoolander: If there is anything that this horrible tragedy can teach us, it's that a male model's life is a precious, precious commodity. Just because we have chiseled abs and stunning features, it doesn't mean that we too can't not die in a freak gasoline fight accident.

Invader Zim - Vol. 1 (doom doom doom)

It is the first in a three-disc series, originally released individually but re-released in 2005 as a set. The popular series was co-produced by Jhonen Vasquez, a well-known artist whose short-series "johnny the homicidal maniac" virtually catapulted to fame in an esoteric sense. True to the same roots, Invader zim hit nickelodeon in the early year of this millenia with admittedly lackluster success, and was cancelled by nickelodeon for lack of demographic appeal. But in letting it slip through the cracks, nickelodeon lost a shining jewel of animation. These discs, released in 2004, salvage the past and bring this dark science-fiction-meets-mundane-futurism release into the forefront of the grandiose.

The movie was directed by Neil Burger, and is set with a dark and mysterious tone, it was nominated for an Oscar for cinematographer, Dick Pope.

The Wire Season 2

Set in Baltimore, this show centers around the city's inner-city drug scene. It starts as mid-level drug dealer, D'Angelo Barksdale beats a murder rap. After a conversation with a judge, Det. James McNulty has been assigned to lead a joint homicide and narcotics team, in order to bring down drug kingpin Avon Barksdale. Avon Barksdale, accompanied by his right-hand man Stringer Bell, enforcer Wee-Bey and many lieutenants (including his own nephew, D'Angelo Barksdale), has to deal with law enforcement, informants in his own camp, and competition with a local rival, Omar, who's been robbing Barksdale's dealers and reselling the drugs. The supervisor of the investigation, Lt. Cedric Daniels, has to deal with his own problems, such as a corrupt bureaucracy, some of his detectives beating suspects, hard-headed but determined Det. McNulty, and a blackmailing deputy. The show depicts the lives of every part of the drug "food chain", from junkies to dealers, and from cops to politicians.
