Invader Zim - Vol. 1 (doom doom doom)

It is the first in a three-disc series, originally released individually but re-released in 2005 as a set. The popular series was co-produced by Jhonen Vasquez, a well-known artist whose short-series "johnny the homicidal maniac" virtually catapulted to fame in an esoteric sense. True to the same roots, Invader zim hit nickelodeon in the early year of this millenia with admittedly lackluster success, and was cancelled by nickelodeon for lack of demographic appeal. But in letting it slip through the cracks, nickelodeon lost a shining jewel of animation. These discs, released in 2004, salvage the past and bring this dark science-fiction-meets-mundane-futurism release into the forefront of the grandiose.

Eight 50-minute long episodes were produced with themes ranging literally from the deepest ocean trenches to coastal colonies of birds and seals. As with all top-secret government projects in the movies, it goes horribly wrong. Forced to progress from a chimp to a human subject, Brosnan secretly recruits local backwards boy and lawnmower pusher Jobe (Jeff Fahey). The increases in intelligence are alarming. It starts as mid-level drug dealer, D'Angelo Barksdale beats a murder rap. After a conversation with a judge, Det. James McNulty has been assigned to lead a joint homicide and narcotics team, in order to bring down drug kingpin Avon Barksdale. Avon Barksdale, accompanied by his right-hand man Stringer Bell, enforcer Wee-Bey and many lieutenants (including his own nephew, D'Angelo Barksdale), has to deal with law enforcement, informants in his own camp, and competition with a local rival, Omar, who's been robbing Barksdale's dealers and reselling the drugs. The supervisor of the investigation, Lt. Cedric Daniels, has to deal with his own problems, such as a corrupt bureaucracy, some of his detectives beating suspects, hard-headed but determined Det. McNulty, and a blackmailing deputy. The show depicts the lives of every part of the drug "food chain", from junkies to dealers, and from cops to politicians.

being that the title should be changed back to Danny the Dog, but I'm
not going to hold that against the movie), Unleashed delivers some of
the best action scenes I've seen to go hand-in-hand with memorable
characters I adored and a story that riveted me from start to finish. I
should also not slight director Louis Leterrier, who puts it all
together with the right mix of strong style and natural storytelling.

Set in New York City, the series chronicled the lives of six best friends as they navigated through the ups and downs of romance and career from the confines of their local coffee shop and some pretty fabulous Manhattan apartments. While the series originally rode to success on the coattails of its Thursday night predecessor SEINFELD, what differentiated FRIENDS from the rash of copycat sitcoms that followed--and made it a bona fide hit in its own right--was the unique chemistry of its fine ensemble cast: Courtney Cox as neurotic clean freak Monica; David Schwimmer as her endearingly hangdog brother Ross; Matt LeBlanc as none-too-bright actor-wannabe Joey Tribbiani; Matthew Perry as sarcastic computer programmer Chandler Bing; Lisa Kudrow as goofy new-age free spirit Phoebe Buffay; and, of course, Jennifer Aniston as reformed spoile...

Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes play the famous lovers kept apart by rival industrialist families. Bookended by newscastsers reciting Shakespeare's prose as their copy, this clever glam updating of ROMEO AND JULIET is one of the most unusual adaptations of the Bard's work in the history of cinema. The stylish and colorful sets earned the film an Oscar nomination for art direction. Created by Stephen J. Cannell (THE A-TEAM, HUNTER, SILK STALKINGS), the show was envisioned as an update on the premise of THE MOD SQUAD. A group of youthful police officers join a special undercover unit that has them pose as high school and college students in order to stop young criminals before their behavior grows worse. The show sparked some controversy during its early years because it did not shy away from presenting serious and sometimes unsavory material, but never in an exploitative manner. THE SECOND SEASON collection contains all 22 episodes, which feature guest stars such as Pauly Shore, Shannon Tweed, and Brad Pitt, all before they were famous.

With acts like the Roots, Kanye West, Jill Scott, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, and a reunion of the Fugees, this will be an automatic favorite for the hip-hop/neo-soul crowd. In its perceptive, celebratory way, the film opens the VIP gates on hip-hop culture and invites everyone in for a funky good time. Gondry's fly-on-the wall camera approach recalls D.A. Pennebaker docs like DON'T LOOK BACK (1967) but the attitude is more laid back and genial; the stars, the band, the locals, the marching band Chappelle buses in from his Ohio hometown, all come together with a rare sense of charmed spontaneity--watching it becomes akin to participation.

The answer: SCARY MOVIE 3. In the latest spoof from director David Zucker (TOP SECRET, THE NAKED GUN), beautiful television reporter Cindy (Anna Faris) covers a story about mysterious crop circles in the corn fields around Tom's (Charlie Sheen) home. Simultaneously, a mysterious videotape of disturbing images is circulating around town, and viewers receive phone calls saying that they will die in seven days. Intrepid reporter Cindy has a gut feeling that the crop circles and the videotape are linked--and she's determined to get to the bottom of the story. At the same time, she is playing mother to her creepy psychic nephew, Cody (Drew Mikuska), and sparks are flying between her and Tom's brother, wannabe-rapper George (Simon Rex). James Wan's directorial debut, written by and starring Leigh Whannell, is a violent, bloody, psychologically exhausting and exhilarating exercise in terror. Adam (Whannell) and Dr. Gordon (Cary Elwes) are chained in a vile, disgusting bathroom, separated by a bloody corpse holding a gun and a tape recorder. They are each given a saw--the only obvious way out is to cut one of their feet off. A serial killer who specializes in torturing morally bereft strangers is playing a game with them: Gordon has less than eight hours to kill Adam or else the doctor's wife (Monica Potter) and daughter (Mackenzie Vega) will be murdered. As the two men engage in a battle of wits, alternately trying to help each other and secretly attempting to win the game, a series of flashbacks reveals the history of the madman and the pair of detectives (Danny Glover and Ken Leung) handling the case. Some of the torture scenes are excruciatingly horrible and hard to watch, a real treat for fans of the genre. ...

Actor Bill Paxton's directorial debut, FRAILTY, has been hailed for its originality by author Stephen King and director Sam Raimi (THE EVIL DEAD). The film opens on a stormy night when an intense man (Matthew McConaughey) walks into FBI headquarters in Dallas and tells Agent Wesley Doyle (Powers Boothe) that he knows who the "God's Hand" serial killer is. He tells a compelling tale, shown in flashback, of how he and his brother lived with their kind widower father (Bill Paxton), a mechanic. One night, their father woke them to tell them he'd had a vision, and that God had commanded the family to slay demons in human form. The older brother, Fenton (Matt O'Leary), doesn't believe a word of it, and assumes that their father has gone mad. The younger brother, Adam (Jeremy Sumpter), is more easily swayed. Soon the father is bringing people home, supposedly chosen by God for them to slay.

Natasha Richardson gives a bravura performance as Stella Raphael, an unhappy woman who is forced to move with her son, Charlie (Gus Lewis), to rural Yorkshire when her husband, Max (Hugh Bonneville), earns a post as deputy superintendent of a psychiatric institution for the criminally insane. Among the patients there is Edgar Stark (Marton Csokas), a brooding sculptor who has been imprisoned for the brutal murder of his wife. When Stark gets a job working in the Raphaels' garden and conservatory, the attraction grows between Stella and him as Stark's doctor, Peter Cleave (Ian McKellen), Max's rival, watches closely, harboring his own ulterior motives. When Edgar escapes, Stella must decide whether to remain in her sedate life in Yorkshire or go after the dangerous man she has fallen in love with.

Revolving around endless misunderstandings about sexuality and drugs, and playing off quite a few stereotypes, the show displayed John Ritter's knack for physical comedy, delivering laughs through the comedian's outlandish expressions, gestures, and mannerisms. When aspiring chef Jack Tripper (John Ritter) tells landlord Mr. Roper (Normal Fell) that he is gay in order to peacefully cohabit with his two attractive female roommates, he must construct a web of lies (which proves almost impossible to unravel) in order to cover his tracks. Loveable airhead Chrissy (Suzanne Somers) and sexy Janet (Joyce DeWitt) add to the miscommunication and only make things worse with their antics. Though Chrissy was many fans' favorite character, her appearance throughout the fifth season was sporadic.

Originally adapted in 1976 for a made-for-TV drama by director Tom Gries, this version of events sees Jeremy Davies (29 PALMS) taking on the role of Charles Manson. While Gries' film of the tale focused primarily on the trial, this version from director John Gray takes a broader view, concentrating instead on the possible motives behind the actions of Manson and his "family." Brutally murdering actress Sharon Tate and her house guests in the summer of 1969, Manson and his followers acted under a misguided attempt to kick start a race war among the general population. Obsessed with The Beatles' WHITE ALBUM, Manson believed the band were speaking directly to him, and conducted his activities at their behest. Gray's film attempts to uncover the man behind the myth, offering a distressing portrait of one of America's most infamous crime figures.

Unfortunately, his one major flaw is that he is in love with three very different women, none of who knows about each other. The film is shot in Cherbourg, France, using inventive cinematography and blazing colors and textures. Local life is rendered in pink, orange, green, and blue. Wallpapers and umbrella patterns, sweaters and hats, cars and gas stations--each element of the film contributes to the exuberant color and exalted mood. The film is also unique in the sense that every word is sung. The fertile collaboration between Demy and legendary French composer Michel Legrand reaches its climax in the light opera structure and lilting and memorable songs that make up the plot. Catherine Deneuve is the fresh and beautiful 16-year-old Genevieve, pining away in her mother's umbrella shop.
Based on the celebrated novel by Nicholas Sparks, THE NOTEBOOK tells the story of a young couple who overcome insurmountable odds to experience the true power of love. In a modern-day nursing home, a kindhearted man (James Garner) reads a tender story to another patient (Gena Rowlands). The story begins during one glorious summer in small-town South Carolina in the early 1940s. Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) is a blue-collar log mill worker who courts the wealthy and sheltered Allie Nelson (Rachel McAdams). Before long, sparks are flying and the pair is in love. But eventually Allie's snobby parents force their separation, and when World War II arrives, Noah heads overseas to serve his country. In the meantime, Allie becomes a nurse and falls for another man (James Marsden), to Noah's dismay. Nonetheless, he buys and fixes up the mansion he promised Allie he would one day restore, and when he and Allie reunite just before her wedding, their love blossoms once again. Decades later, in the nursing home, the s...

SHOW, the classic 1980s cartoon series THE LEGEND OF ZELDA remains a nostalgic highlight of Reagan-era animation. Based on the popular Nintendo video game of the same name, the syndicated series follows the superhero adventures of a young swordsman named Link as he fights to protect the beautiful Princess Zelda (named by game creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, for writer F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous wife) from the evil clutches of the wizard Ganon in the magical kingdom of Hyrule. Deviating from its video-game source material by injecting comedy and romance into the action/fantasy/sci-fi mix, the animated series is presented in its entirety with this 13-episode collection.

The lives of his backroom staff and family fall under as much scrutiny as the man himself, offering a fascinating glimpse of what life as the president of the United States could be like. The season begins with Bartlet's daughter, Zoey, still in the hands of kidnappers. As the rescue effort gathers pace, art imitates life as suicide bombers, the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the threat of terrorism loom large--all of which were pertinent issues in 2004 when this season was shot. Meanwhile, Bartlet's staff struggles to keep the press under control, the funeral for a former president finds Bartlet distracted by the situation in Saudi Arabia, a documentary crew descends on the White House, and a contamination alert breaks out in the West Wing. The movie begins with a prologue that spoofs THE EXORCIST, with Andy Richter as the young priest, James Woods as the old priest, and Natasha Lyonne as the poor possessed child with the salty tongue. From there the plot uses and abuses from Shirley Jackson's THE HAUNTING--in this case, a group of college students must spend a weekend in a haunted castle in exchange for receiving an A from their naughty professor.

Jerry Seinfeld and co-creator Larry David (CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM) have drawn inspiration from the mundanities and absurdities of their own life experiences--many of which are New York-centric--and shaped them into the stories that have made Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), George (Jason Alexander), Kramer (Michael Richards), and Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) some of the most popular and enduring characters on television. In season five, Jerry finds out Elaine faked her orgasms when they were dating, and convinces her to let him try again. George moves back in with his parents, and experiences a reversal of his bad luck when he decides to do the opposite of everything he normally does. Jerry's girlfriend refuses to give Elaine toilet paper in the ladies' room, while Kramer recognizes her voice from a sex hotline.

Starting and ending with Frida on her deathbed, the film spans the famous painter's life from her teenage years to her death at the young age of 47. From start to finish, Frida is portrayed as a relentlessly energized, self-righteous, headstrong, asserted woman. She had liberal views and a socialist political stance. She was bisexual and promiscuous. She drank and abused painkillers, sang and danced, and fearlessly poured her pain and beauty into her paintings. At the age of 18, Frida was horribly injured in a bus accident. Though she learned to walk again, she lived her life in physical agony, enduring multiple surgeries, and eventually needing a wheelchair.

When a strong North wind blows through town, it brings the vivacious and mysterious Vianne (Juliette Binoche) and her young daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol). Vianne is soon the talk of the town: an unwed mother who declines to go to church and opens up a chocolate shop in the midst of Lent. Her good-natured, honorable personality and psychic ability (she can predict what kind of sweets best suit each person, and magically cures each of them of their particular maladies) make her as irresistible as her delectable treats. However, Vianne and her daughter are resented by the conservative mayor, the Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina), and by the pious Caroline (Carrie-Anne Moss), who has disowned her own spirited mother (Judi Dench, who plays Vianne's landlady), refusing the elderly woman access to her beloved grandson.

Faced with almost certain destruction of her planet's natural resources, the warrior Princess Nausicaa must rally her people against an evil queen's brutal army to bring a new life to her homeland. Reminiscent of works by J.R.R. Tolkien, this story of responsibility, coming of age, peace, and redemption has proven to be one of the legendary Miyazaki's most enduring works. As opposed to the earlier release of this film, titled WARRIORS OF THE WIND, this release stays true to Miyazaki's original work.

Eddie Murphy stars in this spooky, CGI effect-packed Disney film, based on the famous Disney World attraction. He plays Jerry, a workaholic real estate agent who interrupts his family's vacation to check out a remote mansion that's for sale. But soon he and his family are trapped in the haunted house and are screaming for their lives. Terence Stamp is the ghost butler, and Nathaniel Parker is the ghost owner who falls for Jerry's wife, Sara (Marsha Thomason), believing she is the reincarnation of his lost love and providing for both a refreshingly interracial, and frighteningly inter-dimensional romance. Jennifer Tilly has a great bit as a loudmouthed head in the crystal ball; Wallace Shawn and Dina Walters are the ghost servants. Zombies rise up from their graves to attack the living, but generally the film is harmless kid stuff that is bursting with cheerful color, noise, bloodless shocks and refreshingly bathroom-free humor.

The nonstop jokes are hilariously rewarding as they exaggerate adolescent vanity and satirize political correctness issues like race, class, and homosexuality. Here, the Plastics are the most popular girls in school. They wrote the rule book on Girl World, like always wearing pink on Tuesdays. And they're mean. So when pretty new girl Cady (Lindsay Lohan) arrives in school, the first thing they do is make fun of her. Then they try to win her over. Cady is torn between social cliques. Sent to abduct two lieutenants of a vicious Somali warlord, the soldiers found themselves surrounded by hostile militia. Two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down and many men lost their lives. Mark Bowden of the Philadelphia Inquirer told the story of the battle in his exhaustively researched, critically acclaimed book, BLACK HAWK DOWN, and filmmaker Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR) and screenwriter Ken Nolan have done an amazing job of bringing the dramatic story to the screen. The only truly readily available job was as a porter for the Pullman Rail Company, which meant work for a third of what white employees made, and being addressed only as "George," after George Pullman, who was the first person to employ freed slaves. Philip Randolph, a black journalist, makes it his mission to help these forgotten workers, and forges ahead to form the first black union in America. Robert Townsend directs this stirring civil rights drama, which originally aired on Showtime.

This new creature loves destruction and chaos; he's considered dangerous enough to be exiled to a deep space lockup. But 626 steals a spaceship and escapes, touching down in Hawaii, where he ends up in a dog pound. He's adopted by Lilo, a spunky young girl, who renames her new pet "Stitch."

Stitch turns out to be quite a handful--his destructive impulses are on full display as he trashes Lilo's house, among other naughty acts. Lilo is being raised by her older sister Nani (their parents died in an accident), and they are under surveillance by an evil social worker, Cobra Bubbles, who wants to take Lilo away from Nani. Lilo must tame Stitch, or his bad behavior could be held against Nani by Cobra. Meanwhile, Stitch is being pursued by his creator Jumba, who has followed him to Earth to try to recapture him. With a set resembling the living room of countless family homes across the United States, the show concerned itself the with the antics of its main star, Roseanne Barr (later Roseanne Arnold), her husband Dan (John Goodman), and their kids. More like a regular working-class family than any other characters previously seen on television, the Illinois-bred Conners use brutal honesty and acerbic wit to raise their three children: rapidly maturing Becky, sarcastic Darlene, and precocious DJ. Meanwhile, they have to deal with the typical problems of an American family, such as annoying relatives, worries about jobs and money, and the struggle to find time for themselves. ROSEANNE was among the first shows on television to deal in a truthful and deglamorized way with everyday issues that average viewers could relate to--and it managed to remai...

Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, the mind behind innovative animated shows like SAMURAI JACK and THE POWERPUFF GIRLS, this series takes the viewer through the Clone Wars--largely an off-screen presence in the theatrical films--and right up to the beginning of the sixth film, EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE SITH. Tartakovsky's take on George Lucas's world follows Anakin Skywalker through stormy adventures, galactic battles, and the secret ceremony that makes him an official Jedi knight. The story also introduces us to the evil General Grievous and takes us through the Jedis' attempts to beat back his surprise attack on Coruscant.

The mission of this arm of the CIA is to combat SD-6, a secret terrorist organization whose agents believe that they, in fact, work for a secret organization of the CIA that combats terrorism. This second season of the series introduces a host of new plot twists including a new romance for Sydney and the appearance of a woman who may be Sydney's mother. The season begins with a documentary crew descending on the hospital, and Dr. Elizabeth Corday (Alex Kingston) joining the regular team of doctors in the unit. Always looking for new and innovative ways of bringing the show to the screen, the ER production team decided to shoot the first episode live, and the cast performed it twice; once for the East Coast and once for the West Coast (the West Coast version is included here). As the 21 episodes of this season unfold, all the hectic tension of a regular Emergency Room is energetically captured on camera, with cast regular Anthony Edwards among the directors this time around (on an episode titled "Of Past Regret and Future Fear").

When 16-year-old Jill (newcomer Camilla Belle in the part originally played by Carol Kane) exceeds her cell phone minutes, her parents force her to spend the night babysitting instead of attending a huge bonfire bash. As Jill?s father drives her to Dr. Mandrakis?s house for the evening, we are given the sense from the long drive, spooky music, and winding roads, that the home is literally at the end of the Earth. Perched over the edge of a steamy lake, the mansion-like structure is made entirely of dark wood and glass. With an arboretum built into its center, the palatial home feels both Zen-like and forbidding.
