No seriously. Babel is very close to being one of the worst movies I've seen in YEARS. YEARS!! It is just so awful in so many ways that I don't even know where to begin. The only redeeming factor is that it does have pretty good cinematography. Unfortunately for the cinematographer, he tied his striking imagery to such a stupid stupid story. Actually, story is the wrong word to use. It's just... nothing. Things happen in the movie, but there's a tenuous connection between them at best, and you learn nothing from watching it. It's one of the only movies I've ever seen that I seriously wanted to walk out of the theatre.
I'm not alone in these sentiments either. I watched this with 10 other people, and every single one of them couldn't believe how bad the movie was. I can understand if I was alone in my disgust against the movie as I'd just be an oddball out. But the fact that other people felt the same way as me, makes it all the more baffling that it won best picture! I guess politics, not quality, really do rule the day when it comes to awards. Cynicism is the only way I can resolve this issue. Really.
