Pirates of the Caribbean 3... not that good

It's the summer of trilogies and it's starting out quite disappointingly. First Spider-man 3 is a big waste of time, which was so disappointing, and now Pirates 3 is little more than a special effects extravaganza. Let me be clear in that Pirates 3 is in no way as horrible as SM3, but I don't think it's as good as the second one. There's definitely more high-flying action and stunts and that kind of thing, but it's just TOO MUCH.

I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone, but there's a 30 minute ship-fight sequence that takes place in a swirling vortex of water in a storm. And while technically it's extremely impressive, there is such as thing as pacing. Make things exciting, and then cool them down to let the audience catch their breath. Well, quite literally the movie doesn't let you catch your breath. However, there are some really loooong and plodding parts as well. Instead of mixing up the calm parts with the exciting parts, they mashed all the boring parts to the beginning/middle of the movie and left all the excitement for the end. Similar to the other Pirates movies it's also EXTREMELY long, after sitting in the theater for 3 hours it does start to get tiring no matter what is on screen.

Still it's not a bad movie, and maybe it'll get better the more times I see like with what happened with Pirates 2. The difference is that Pirates 3 doesn't have as much of the beautiful blue scenery as the second.

Pirates of the Caribbean 3, long, boring, and overall not that good? Surprise, surprise. Instead of watching this movie, throw in a copy of the equally long, boring and not-good Pirates of the Caribbean 2. I hate these crappy effects-infested, 3hr snore films optimized for HDTV screen tests, and extended DVD box sets to capture consumer $$$. .*cough* Lord of the Rings *cough*

I must have missed this thread. First off all I have to say:
Omar: Quit your job, being a programmer is not your calling. You should be a movie critic. You don't like any movies except Spider-Man 2, and you like to complain.

And second, I thought it was pretty good, but a little long, although I thought the whole thing with the god, Calypso was pretty lame.

You're damn right I like to complain! :P

And I'll have you know I like quite a few movies, I just think that yours and mine tastes don't particularly line up. Though I have to admit I'm struggling a tad to remember the last movie I liked in the theatres.

I saw Ocean's Thirteen this past weekend, and well... let's just say the pattern of disappointing thirds continues. I have to admit that I didn't like Ocean's Twelve either though, and haven't seen Ocean's 11.

Ok, so a movie that I have liked? Well I really like the Harry Potter movies, and I'm looking forward to Evan Almighty, that should be good. I am Legend looks sick as well.

Ocean's 12 was horrible; I can't believe they're making 13. "Hey! We're a cool Hollywood elite club for men and we make movies!" I think the issue is that Omar has been bringing up the topic of bad movies lately, rather than him being a hater.

I saw all the three-quals, except Oceans 13. Shrek 3: incredibly aweful, almost unwatchable, it sucks, watch shrek 1. Pirates 3: I liked it, too long, Callipso was stupid. Spider 3: I liked it, "dark" Peter Parker was totally fake- you never bought it for a second, too many plots. Yaaaaa... I saw Spidr Man 3 in a theater, and Shrek and Pirates 3 at a drive in.

Maybe the third movie in the series always sucks. Terminator 3 sucked. Batman 3 sucked. Matrix 3 sucked (and 2, btw).

Star Wars bucks that trend. Return of the Jedi was pretty good. Maybe not as good as Empire Strikes Back, but minus the ewoks it was a fun little romp. And with the new trilogy, the 3rd movie was by FAR the best. I wonder what other trilogies had good sequels...

That sucks about shrek, I like the first 2. Haven't seen any of the other movies you guys are talking about but Ocean's 13 seems like the lamest of the bunch.

Other crappy threequels:

  • Superman III
  • The Godfather: Part III
  • Halloween III
  • I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer

Some decent three-quels (at least relative to the originals):

  • Goldfinger
  • Rocky III
  • Mission: Impossible III
  • X-Men: The Last Stand
  • Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

Undecided:

  • Rambo III (very violent btw)
  • Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
It's interesting that the horror, action, sci-fi/fantasy, and superhero genres are the most likely to have a sequel. I know there are some good comedy sequels, but I couldn't think of any that went to III.
