Here are some mini-reviews of some movies that I've seen lately, I'd love to hear what people though, either about the movies I've mentioned here or other ones they've seen. Listed in no particular order.

Babel
Horrible. There was a lot of hype about this movie while it was making the rounds at the festivals, but I see absolutely no reason for it. Think Syriana, but crappy... actually that'd still be a good movie. Try this: this movie is like someone saw Syriana but doesn't understand english and there was no subtitles, and they only watched it once and then tried to make the same movie.

The Prestige
Very good, and even better the second time. Nolan's use of quick flashbacks are starting to become cliche for me, but I'm not getting too tired of the style. I love Christian Bale, and Hugh Jackman is great. I don't know if the movie is trying to be smart, but it is smart in some ways, but not really a movie I'd call smart, if you know what I mean.

The Illusionist
See The Prestige instead.

Borat
Very disappointed in this one. I really like the Borat character and love watching the clips on YouTube or on the Ali G DVDs, but as a full fledged movie I just felt like I was wasting my time. There are definitely some funny parts in the movie, but most of the "plot" and scripted scenes were just boring. Don't go in with the hype that this is the redefinition of comedy because it's not, go in with realistic expectations and you'll probably enjoy yourself.

Jackass 2
This movie is a bit older, but I remembered it from talking about Borat. If you're looking for slapstick comedy just go with Jackass 2. I don't even like Jackass normally, but I was watching this when I needed a pick-me-up and it was perfect. It's really gross though, as you should expect, so be aware of that.

Short Bus
Um... ya... I had no idea about what this movie was about, and if I did I would've never gone in the first place. AFTER the fact, I found out that all the hype behind it is that it's very explicit sexually, and I can confirm that this is the case. But who cares, because it's gross! And above and beyond that the movie just sucks. There's no point, no plot, no story. There's a hinting to a story but it's handled as an afterthought and things just resolve themselves without any kind of REAL events or learning taking place. Just a very stupid and worthless film all around.

Oh, and about Babel, I should mention that where I was sitting in the theatre was not a good location. The area was flat so there were seats right ahead of us (but 20 feet away) so it looked like watching a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 DVD. Which wouldn't be a big problem normally, except that they totally covered the subtitles, and in this movie there are a lot of subtitles. Whenever someone would talk everybody in our row would start fidgeting around craning their necks, it was quite humurous. Except that 20 minutes into the movie, we just didn't care anymore because it sucked so badly.

I'm just typing out what comes into my head now. Concerning the Prestige and The Illusionist... we go dozens of years with absolutely no movies concerning magicians in the late 19th century, and then all of a sudden within the span of 2 months we have TWO? Totally reminds of Armageddon and Deep Impact. Is it a rule in Hollywood that old ideas have to be relived in pairs?

Wow, Omar. You've seen a lot of movies lately. Well, I can't think of the last movie I saw, but I've been watching a lot of TV so here goes some TV reviews.

Heroes
Booyah! This show is awesome. I love X-Men so it's really no surprise that I like this show so much. I admit that it's getting a little drawn out, but the superhero backstory is my favourite part of superheroes in general so I'm enjoying this quite a bit. Some of the storylines are boring (Niki, Husband-Wife fights, Governor Petrelli) but when this show gets things right, it's awesome.

America's Next Top Model
Oops. Did I just write that? I wouldn't watch something so lame, would I? Yes, I totally would and this season is just barely watchable. There's nothing interesting happening, no compelling characters, it's not overly bitchy. But hey, I can't help myself so it's got something to it.

Grey's Anatomy
I never liked this show when it first came out, but it's grown on me and it's become one of my viewing options. It's still pretty soapopera-ish for my taste, but the writing is so well done (as is the acting), that it's easy to see past the parts I'm not into.

Dexter
I almost forgot about this one. What's amazing about this show is that it's been able to make a seemingly deplorable character likable. I never thought I'd be rooting for a serial killer, but week after week I hope Dexter makes it a little farther in his quest.

What is Dexter's quest? That's my question.

If we're talking about shows well there are quite a few that I'd like to watch, but so far just haven't found the time. A great surprise that I found was the reshowing of Sleeper Cell on TMN, booya!

I've watched the first 5 episodes or so of The Wire as well, and it's fantastic. I haven't seen any of the first 3 seasons but I don't really care, I'm sure I'd enjoy it more if I knew what was going on, but it's already very enjoyable for me. The depth and complexity of the plot and characters is extremely fascinating and I'm rooting for a lot of them, and want to see where everything goes. I know the show has a long ramp, but I also know the payoff will be worth it.

Movies I Have Seen Recently

Note: Some of these movies are not in theatres, some of the movies I actually haven't seen recently, and some of them actually are recent theatre releases.

The Grudge

I actually saw this movie two days ago on DVD. I've heard from many a person that this movie is really scary, so I decided to give it a shot. This movie is more creepy than scary. In fact I actually laughed out loud in some of the scenes (a guy almost falls down the stairs after slipping on some blood, funny). I didn't find it scary, but it had a decent story (unlike many a horror film based around cheap tricks to make you jump out of your seat). Check it out if your into the horror flicks. Also, check out The Grudge 2, still in theatres at some places.

Over the Hedge

I will say it now, didn't really enjoy this movie. It has some funny moments, and I know I'm not the target audience, but the movie didn't cut it for me. I would compare it to The Wild, another kids movie I didn't like. Great for little kids though, all my brother and sisters (younger than me by far) laughed at every little joke. I've seen the story a million times (guy steals stuff and has to replace it or he gets dead), most recently in Stuart Little 3 which has the EXACT same story. Good voice acting though (Steve Carrel I'm lookin' at you).

The Da Vinci Code

One of my favorite movies of all time, I loved the book and I loved the movie. The acting is excellent and the story is still compelling even if you have read the book. Many books turn into movies after a while, but this is the one to see. The movie differs from the book every so slightly however. If you don't like lengthy thought inducing movies, you won't like The Da Vinci Code, at about two and a half hours long and in a mystery movie format. Coming out on DVD soon (tommorow if I remember correctly).

World Trade Center

Also one of my favorite movies of all time, this is a heart renching film is based on the events that occured on 9/11/2001. In case someone on earth hasen't heard of this date, this is the day terrorists crashed hijacked passenger planes into both of the Trade Towers in New York and also into the pentagon. One of the worst attacks on American soil ever. The movie follows the story of some of the first responders, risking there lives to help the people inside the burning trade towers. Half of the story is two police officers trapped under the rubble of the now collapsed trade towers, and the other half is there worried families. It is a fitting tribute to those that lost there lives on that day. Good acting throughout, and good visual effects. Nothing was spared to make this movie worthy of the tale it tells. It is shocking, and one of the few movies that brought a tear to my eye. I actually felt patriotic leaving the theatre. Everyone should see this movie, although it is very sad.

Nacho Libre

Recently released on DVD, if you are not a Jack Black fan, you will hate this movie. In fact, even if you are a Jack Black fan, you might hate this movie. It has some funny moments, but most of its humor is based on stupidity and gross out scenes. The wrestleing scenes are even stupid. I am a major Jack Black fan (Tenacious D, School of Rock) and I couldn't see much of the famous humor he puts into his movies and songs. It seemed that he was being towned down for this role. It gets points for having some actuall Lucha Libre wrestlers in the cast. Not very funny.

On TV

I am totally absorbed in the Fox network programming of Sundays. Family Guy is back and funny as ever, American Dad is putting out the laughs, The Simpsons is still funny after an estimated 500 yrs on the Fox network, and The War At Home is hilarious. I need a thesaurus, I dont know any other words for funny besides hilarious. If you couldn't tell I like comedies. I am also a HUGE fan of The Office and My Name's Earl, the Office is currently my favorite (tied with Family Guy). Not too many other shows I would mention. I don't watch too much TV.

Just got back from the theatre...

Stranger Than Fiction

I saw this movie with 2 other guys, and I thought that might be a bit weird since I pegged it from the trailers as a romantic comedy. Surprisingly enough, the movie was very good and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. One important point to note is that this movie is a lot more serious than the previews let on, and is definitely a very far cry from what Will Ferrell has traditionally made. I was actually extremely impressed by Ferrell's acting in the movie as he is obviously toning things down and being more "normal". Some might argue that he swung too far the other way and be too stiff, but I think that's just part of the character.

It's also a pretty dark movie, it's not light-hearted laughs. I mean there are some laughs, but there's some touching moments, and the whole facing your own mortality thing isn't just a minor topic, it's dealt with in a mature and engaging fashion. I have an affinity towards black comedies, but even then this is a smart film that you should check out.

And yes, I do watch a lot of movies.
