“...the beauty of the open source Thunderbird email client is its extensibility. Sure we love our web-based email like Gmail, but Thunderbird is the ultimate open source desktop email app. Its pluggable interface lets developers freely build extensions to make it ever more useful. And ever more useful do a few key extensions make it." Gina Trapani, Lifehacker, Feb. 7, 2007

Pros
- Free open-source software
- Custom junk mail filters
- multiple mailbox support
- Extensions and Themes
- Automated Update
- Phishing Protection
- Very quick installation; can be used from portable media e.g. USB stick
- Message Tagging
- With proper plugin, can be used for a lot of web mail accounts (hotmail, yahoo, gmail)
- tried & tested interface, easy message filtering & organisation
Cons
- Extensions must be downloaded and installed manually.
- Junk mail filtering is not always accurate. If it marks it as junk and you tell it that it is not junk, it has a tendency to keep marking it as junk.
