Parental Advisory: Mature Content

Desensitized is the first album released by Drowning Pool after the death of Dave Williams (vocalist). Desensitized features Jason "Gong" Jones as the lead vocalist for the band. This is the only album to do so, as Jason left the band shortly after the release of Desensitized. The cover features porn star Jesse Jane, who claims that Drowning Pool is one of her favorite bands. She has also been romantically linked with Jason Jones and makes an appearance in the music video "Step Up."

Even with the addition of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to the line-up, and Shins James Mercer adding lovely vocals to "Florida", We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank isn't as radio-friendly as the previous album (Good News for People who Love Bad News). This doesn't mean it isn't a good album.... because it is....it just feels less "complete" of a concept album. After a few listens, standout songs like "Missed the Boat", "Education", and "Dashboard" will be buzzing in your head.

This is a two disc collection from this classically-based, metal-loving, Finnish quartet. Disk one is a "greatest hits", featuring the best moments from first decade, including a handful of tracks from their internationally successful Apocalyptica Plays Metallica on Four Cellos. Disk two is a collection of new songs with guest singers for every track.

I bought this for the disk 1 "hits", but after numerous listens of both disks, I would now have to say I love disk 2 even more. Disk two has a few death metal songs (eg. track 1 - Repressed), which I don't really care for, but it is filled with amazingly haunting and beautiful songs featuring an array of international artists from a variety of countries. My favourite song is track 4 - Hope, Vol.2.

I highly recommend this double-disk set for a great introduction to the bands instrumental-cello-metal wickedness, while the second disk will be a pleasant surprise as well.

Just when this Icelandic crew seemed stuck in loud/soft/loud/ soft rut a la Mogwai or Godspeed You Black Emperor, they release their most beguiling, subtle and beautiful album yet. This album, allegedly the group's first sung in Icelandic rather than their own made-up "Hopelandic" (not that this listener could tell the difference) is relentlessly joyous, unaffectedly rad and inventive but never just for its own sake. Strings hold an ever more prominent place in the music, and this is a good thing. Songs unfold slowly as usual, but they take unexpected turns as often as not. The brilliant "Glósóli" burbles with as much melodic invention and anything by their fellow Icelanders Mum. Takk is a delight from start to finish, managing to be both their most accessible and experimental album yet.

Oh, Inverted World is the first album by The Shins, released June 19, 2001 on the Sub Pop Records label. The album was released to critical acclaim in July 2001. It featured the songs "Caring is Creepy" and "New Slang," both of which appeared in the 2004 film Garden State. The songs on the album are heavily influenced by '60s sunshine pop, specifically the Beach Boys. Oh, Inverted World placed at number 35 on the Pazz & Jop critic's poll for 2001.

Chutes Too Narrow is The Shins' 2003 follow-up to their breakthrough album, Oh, Inverted World. The album title comes from a lyric in the song "Young Pilgrims." The album was generally well received by critics, garnering an overall score of 88/100 on Metacritic. According to Nielson SoundScan, they have sold over 393,000 copies to date. The album has a much cleaner sound than the Shins' 2001 debut, Oh, Inverted World, largely due to the album's being mixed by producer Phil Ek, who also worked with Built to Spill and Modest Mouse. The album also included violin parts on "Saint Simon," played by Annemarie Ruljancich. Chutes Too Narrow was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. The song "Gone for Good" was used in the 2004 film In Good Company.

If you like the punk sound with a bit of emo and heavy beats...this album is for you. I have been listening to this album a lot lately...and I am not an AFI fan. Their early stuff is too "Misfits", and their new stuff is too EMO-pretentious. This album hits the mark. I am a fan of Coheed&Cambria, and this album reminds me of their sound in some way. D’espairs Ray’s Spiral Staircase #15 Final: 20070513 Shibuya AX Japan is the group’s latest concert DVD. The DVD was released back in September but could not be widely found until recently. D’espairs Ray is a Japanese Goth rock band that has been gaining in popularity in the US over the past three years. The band was formed back in 1999 and has had the same members through the whole history of the group. The look of the band is of sexy dark personas that fit well with their music. Their group started out as part of the visual Kei movement (which consisted of flamboyant styles of dress and performance) in Japan but has transitioned into a style that could be just considered rock.

I recently got to see them live at the Taste of Chaos tour which was one of the places where you could pick up their DVD. D’espairs Ray is known for putting on good shows and if you can’t see them live this DVD is the next best thing. At the tour there were so many groups going through the stage that they couldn’t adjust the mikes for everyone and it was hard to hear them over their instruments, but with the DVD the sound is perfect. The only distraction is the audience getting loud every now and then. The disk even comes with special features like you being able to put subtitles on the songs and these can either be in Japanese (good for singing along) or in English (so you can know what the songs are really about.

The songs that they performed were some of their latest ones that it is harder for fans to find here in the US. Mirror (the title song from their last album) is presented in a swirl of cool colors that draws viewers in as Karyu opens with guitar riffs that he is known for. In Desert Hizumi’s voice is so clear that this recording could be better then the one that made it onto the album. Even though most of there lyrics are in Japanese, like many other groups there is still the random English mixed in. It is easy to find English translations of their songs online. Most of D’espairs Ray’s music deals with classic rock themes such as life, death, rebirth, and love. A personal favorite of mine on this DVD is Born which includes all four of those aspects.

It was disappointing that they didn’t have at least a few of their classic songs on it that were responsible for letting them become popular. There were also a few times that the crowd got so loud that you couldn’t hear the group at all, but this just shows that the people were having a great time at the show and is understandable of any live recording. Over all this DVD showed the groups newer stuff off wonderfully and will be a great introduction to the band for Americans that haven’t even heard of them yet. They picked songs that let them show off their wide range of style and shows just how good the settings for Japanese concerts can be.
