What the *blank* is up with American Idol?

Yesterday was the first episode of the audition phase of the hugely popular TV series American Idol. I'm not a fan of the show, but, yet I find myself watching it. Why? Is it because of drunk Paula? Or the horribly delusional contestants? Why do people think that they're good, when it's obvious that they're in the bottom 1%?

We watch it because the crappy people make us feel better about ourselves, and the good people are just entertaining to watch. It's kind of like Forest Gump. American Idol is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get. That moment of anticipation right before they open their mouth and you don't know if it's going to be the sound of kittens being killed, or angels descending from heaven is priceless. It's that suspense that makes the show so compelling in the early days. And I do have the same question as you. Do some of these people honestly think they're good singers? Honestly? These people wait DAYS for their audition just to be thrown out in 30 seconds and made to look like a fool.

I find watching the really bad people kind of funny, but I can't stand watching this show. It is 2 hours with about 50,000 commercials and endless banter. What's the ratio of show (and actual singing) to promotional product placement, commercial breaks and meaningless footage that has no bearing or interest to anyone?

There is also something going on behind the scenes you don't see. All of the contestants you see on TV have been pre-screened from tens of thousands of applicants. They have already been judged, and put into three piles: 1) good, 2) mediocre, 3) horrible. Groups 1 and 3 make it to TV. Mediocre doesn't mean good ratings.

It's more like 'American Idle' where the whole country grinds to a hault to watch the show.  I spent four hours of my week watching it after promising myself that I would stay away this year.  Oh well.  That's why I have a laptop with a wireless connection - so that I can update my productwiki while watching.  Check out their ratings.

Ya, I made the same promise this year, but I too get sucked in by the loonies. It is great background TV while browsing the Net. We have Canadian Idol here, but to that I am completely immune.

It's crazy that American Idol is going so strong, STILL!! Wouldn't they have run out of talent by now?? Where are all the people coming from? Has American Idol solved the perpetual motion machine?

Well, you have to remember that people get better over time. So say somebody couldn't get past the initial screening in year 1, well they've been practising the past few years, and now they can get past the screening. I mean, do you honestly know how many people show up to the auditions? Overall, across ALL of the cities, it's probably in the mid to high hundreds of thousands. And how many people do we see each season? A couple of hundred at most. Trust me, they could keep the show going on forever if they wanted to, that's the benefit of a populated country like the US. In Canada, we'd exhaust our supply by season 3.
