The compact keyboard features Sing-Along function, musical information system display, and on-screen icons. Built-in mic input jack and volume controller. 3-step lesson to help you learn to play with the correct notes. Two 10 cm speakers. Supplied microphone and adapter. It also features general MIDI In and Out, but there's no mention in the specifications if this is using MIDI over USB, which newer Yamaha's feature, or if it has the standard midi connectors. The PDF manual for this keyboard is available at Casio's website, though it doesn't specifically mention midi over USB making it safe to assume that it is standard midi ports. The manual does have quite a bit of technical information concerning the midi programming however.

This keyboard is featured at large retailers. It is sold as a "portable" keyboard and as such, does not come with a power supply. Some retailers will bundle a power supply with it; for instance, Costco currently bundles it with a power supply (useful) , a stand (useful) and an electronic chord reference gadget (marginally useful).

The Yamaha PSR-E423 is a syntherizer based portable keyboard, with many feature enhancements over its previous PSR-E413 model. The K1 comes standard with microphone, SmartMedia card and a display that is capable of reproducing piano sheet music with notation, chords and lyrics. Geared especially for young students, the PX-830 boasts a Duet function so that a teacher and his student can play side-to-side. And as well as just practicing, users can also record their own songs via a Sequencer (2 tracks / 1 song). One complaint however is that the black wood is merely faux wood, which users have said looks cheap. Plus even with the lid down, the keys are still exposed on the front side. Nevertheless, most users praise the Casio PX-830 for quality audio; plus it comes with a music book matching the 60+ demo songs.

The Bliptronic 5000 LED Synthesizer is an inexpensive music synthesizer built primarily for entertainment purposes. It can produce 8-bit bleeps/bloops at varying tempos based on the buttons pressed. The whole system revolves around a constantly changing 4-beat pattern. Each button in a row represents a note from one octave. By pushing a button, a note is turned off, and vice versa. If multiple notes are pressed, then a chord is formed. The Synthesizer basically plays all notes horizontally; the ingenuity comes from turning notes on/off while the pattern still loops. Signature to the unit is that it can be attached to an infinite # of Bliptronics via link ports and cables, allowing a group of friends to create a long song where everybody takes part.

The Casio PX-575 is a grand-piano keyboard featuring 88 weighted hammer action keys, 50 drawbar organ tones, 620 advanced tones that have been programmed with DSP tones (stereo, tremolo, electric), and 166 preset rhythms. Featured is a backlit LCD screen for making selections, two integrated speakers, and two pedal jacks in the rear. Plus users can create up to 16 of their own rhythms. The keyboard is geared for practicing at home, and maybe even for studio use, though there are a slew of problems. It’s plastic and not very durable, there are no mini in/out jacks (though it can be done through USB), there are no stereo jacks for connecting to an external amplifier or audio system, supportive USB drivers are not provided for Windows Vista and Macintosh, and due to the weight and size, the PX-575 is not all that portable.

The Casio WK-3800 is a workstation piano keyboard. This is aimed at experienced keyboardists, and provides a complete 76 key layout with full-sized, touch sensitive keys that can play in 32-note polyphony. MIDI interface is built in, and a sequencer allows several tracks to be layered on top of one another. The USB port enables MIDI work, and it can also be used to download more sounds, rhythms and complete songs from the Internet through a PC. Storage of sounds and songs can be handled through a floppy disk drive, an SD card slot, or to the keyboard's internal memory. Basic line in and line out ports are also available. Over 894 tones are built in by default, and pitch bend and modulation wheels enable effects to be layered in real time.

The Korg PA500ORT is a mid-range to high-end keyboard/synthesizer similar to the Korg PA500. The sole difference between the PA500ORT and the standard PA500 is that the PA500ORT offers voices and styles chosen by well-known Middle Eastern musicians. The M3 is a music workstation synthesizer from Korg that offers a step-up from the company's M50 model. Available in 88 and 61-key variations, this model functions as an all-in-one production/arrangement tool with a fully-functional DAW accessible via the unit's TouchView interface. Carrying over Korg's powerful EDS (Enhanced Definition Synthesis) technology from the company's celebrated OAYSYS workstation, the M3 is pre-loaded with nearly 700 megabytes of PCM data for a wide range of sound variation possibilities. A 256-megabyte internal ROM drive has also been provided to store user-customized presets and sound banks, enabling sufficient storage of numerous song arrangements. Among the M3's stock sample sets are a number of electric pianos (reed and tine), a full stereo acoustic piano with damper and resonance layers, a multiple-velocity Clavinet, a number of tape-driven string and woodwind sets and a zero-cancellation mono piano. In addition to the "Xpanded" technology used to engineer the M3, the unit runs version 2.2 of Korg's "KARMA" digital effects processing software for seamless quantization and module synchronization. Generated effects can be hot-swapped in and out in real-time during in live and studio applications, with 700 presets available as well as a wide variety of fully customizable drum grooves.

Yamaha PSR295 Digital Karaoke Keyboard

In addition to the standard Left and Right hand lessons, Version IV of the "Yamaha Education Suite" (Y.E.S.) includes "Your Tempo" and "Repeat & Learn" modes. The keyboard comes with 30 pre-loaded songs, Flash ROM internal storage for adding more, and 70 additional selections on an included CD-ROM. Simply connect the keyboard to your computer via the USB connector and transfer songs to the keyboard for learning or listening (PC only). The PSR-295 is the first in the line with recording capability and also features new performance assistant technology.

One thing that isn't obvious from the documentation is that although you can download Midi files into the keyboard you can't upload your own performances. It has five memories that allow you to record up to five tracks each. This is great until you try to upload the performance to your computer. It isn't until you check the help file with the Music Download application that it doesn't allow you to upload your performances. Having said that I still think it's a value for money thing and it works with Garage Band (although they work hard to hide any Mac compatibility in the printed manual you can actually download a USB driver from the yamaha site). I think it's amazing what they have packed into this.

Casio PX-800

The Casio PX-800 is a digital piano featuring 88 weighted hammer-action keys, 128-note polyphony, 162 built-in tones, and real-time recording, and a song library with 60 built-in songs and space for 10 user songs. Designed for elegance, the PX-800 comes with a custom wood stand and damper/soft sostenuto pedals that almost make the entire unit look like a real piano. The keys are touch-sensitive, though some say they’re a bit heavy. But signature is the 128-note polyphone, which allows stereo sampled piano voices to sound realistic. The two-way, 40w speaker system helps too, though there are stereo line inputs for connecting to a PA system. However, the light plastic bar that supports the food pedal is flimsy. Plus the key covers are not made out of quality wood, which takes away from the unit’s elegance.
