Asus Eee PC 701

The Asus Eee PC is a value priced ultra-portable notebook series based off of Asus' own hardware and software specifications. The Eee PC is a fully operational computer, however the budget price and small form factor limit the performance capabilities. Various configurations are available, with the standard being a 900MHz Celeron M processor, 512MB or RAM and 4GB of solid state memory. More recently Asus has released models based on the new Intel Atom processor, that, with its improved chipset has improved overall performance and cut power consumption. The series has also seen a move to larger 9 and 10" models with larger keyboards, batteries, and screen resolutions to appear more attractive to average consumers that found the miniature keyboards and resolutions lacking compared to full laptop alternatives. Other value priced portable computers are being marketed by companies like Intel (Classmate) and by the One Laptop Per Child non-profit (see the XO-1) but those are targeted towards developing countries, while Asus is offering the Eee PC to everyone.

Hardware Design

At just over an inch thick, the notebook flips open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard and a 7, 9 or 10" screen. The keyboard buttons are justifiably smaller than regular keys, though Asus decided to make the letter larger than the functional keys like "tab" which end up being much smaller than their traditional size. A 1.75" touch pad is included for mouse control with one button available, similar to the Apple's Mighty Mouse, the left side of the button controls left click, with the right side controlling right click. Not unlike Apple's various touch interfaces, the EEE includes advanced (arguably superior) multi-touch support. Around the bevel housing the screen are found two speakers on the sides, and on top is a webcam for video conferencing. Internet is available through the 100 M-bit ethernet port or the included A/B/G WiFi adapter (no modem). All models support SDHC cards.

Included Software

A customized version of Xandros Linux is used to power the Eee PC and give access to its various programs. Many standard programs come bundled in the package, and being a variant of Linux lets you download and install more applications if you wish. On the productivity side, OpenOffice 2.0 ( not 2.3? ) is included which lets you interact with all the usual Microsoft Office documents. A media player, Firefox web browser, and Skype round out the productivity applications available. Asus also includes a suite of casual games accessible under the "play tab".

Eee PC 9-inch screen (900, 901, 900A, 900HA, 904HA)

Various 9 inch models have been introduced with a movement to larger, more usable, higher resolution screens. Beginning with the EEE PC 900 with the same Celeron processor and internal SSD, the series has more recently expanded to cheaper 900H and 900HA models that include the higher performance atom processors and cheaper storage options (a slower SSD in the 900A and a cheaper 160gb hard disk drive in the 900HA).

Eee PC 10-inch screen (1000, 1000HA)

Various 10 inch models have been introduced to allow users larger screens, keyboards and higher capacity batteries - pushing the runtime of these higher costing EEEs to 6-7 hours. All of these contain the newer Atom processors. The 1000 contains 40GB of SSD, and is more expensive than the newly announced 1000HA that contains the same 160GB HDD found in the 900HA. The 1000 series contains a physically larger 10" screen which becomes easier to use despite using the same resolution as the smaller 9" screens.

Acer Aspire One 532h

The Acer Aspire One 532h is a mid-grade netbook designed for the average consumer looking for basic computer features with maximum portability. The Aspire One 532h is Acer's first net-book set to be powered by the Intel Atom N450 processor and GMA3150 chipset. The unit is is covered in a stylish glossy body finish and comes with a 10.1" display screen with a 1280 X 720 max resolution.

The Acer Aspire One 532h has 1 GB of RAM and comes with either a 160 GB or 250 GB hard drive. Additional features of the Aspire One 532h are full Wi-Fi support, optional Bluetooth functionality, Windows 7 starter addition as a pre-installed OS, an integrated memory card reader, and a built-in web cam. The Toshiba Mini NB505 is budget minded netbook equipped with basic features. It replaces the NB500 as Toshiba's cheapest netbook. Hardware components includes an Intel Atom N455 (single core), 1GB of ram, and a 250GB hard drive. The NB505 is advertised to be an environmentally friendly notebook with both Energy Star 5.0 and EPEAT Gold certifications. Even though it is a netbook aimed at buyers with the lowest of budgets; the NB505 manages to offer a solid set of features including a webcam, a full size keyboard and a battery that lasts up to 8 hours. The "EasyGrip" finish is a nice though to the exterior; it rubberised finishing designed to improve grip and it comes in 5 different colours.

Acer Aspire One E100

The Acer Aspire One E100 is a mid-grade net-book designed after the Acer D255 model which is completely branded and altered to function as an education device. The Aspire One E100 will include a rubber exterior body coating, unique school branding options, and a plethora of pre-installed education software.

The Acer Aspire One E100 netbook will include a 10.1 inch LCD display, an unidentified Intel Atom processor, 1GB installed RAM, and a 250GB total storage capacity hard drive. Acer is also claiming the Aspire One E100 will feature an estimated battery life of eight hours of consistent use. For OS options the Aspire One E100 will include dual boot options (Android/Windows) which means it provides users with a choice to boot into one OS or the other. As of this writing there is no current release date or rated MSRP for the Acer Aspire One E100 netbook, however using the D255 as an estimate the E100 will likely cost approximately $350.

Sony VAIO P

Leaked onto the Sony website before Christmas 2008, the Sony P-series is Sony's late answer to the netbook phenomena. With more information given at CES 2009, it appears that the P-series will feature a 1.33GHz Intel Processor, an 8" LED backlit screen with 1600 x 768 resolution, 802.11N and 3G WWAN, a GPS module and a 60GB HDD, 64GB SSD or 128GB SSD. With a fairly large keyboard with no touchpad, the device will have a ThinkPad style pointer, runs Windows Vista, and a battery life of 4 hours (or 8 with a larger/heavier high capacity battery). Alongside the Windows OS Sony is adding an "instant-on" lite-OS based on its Cross Media Bar (XMB) interface that will let you access music, Internet and e-mail without fully booting the computer.

The Asus Eee PC 1015B is a netbook powered by AMD Fusion. The AMD APU combines CPU and GPU functions onto a single chip, a design that enhances communication between the two components. This design also brings power consumption down. Asus offers the choice of either a 1.2GHz single-core APU, or a 1GHz dual-core version, which will be better equipped for multitasking. Introduced soon after the launch of the 1008HA, the 1005HA is a similar netbook device which consists of two distinct models: the 1005HA-M and the 1005HA-H. Based on the same MacBook Air-esque body as the 1008HA, the 1005HA is slightly thicker, allowing for access to the ports not found on the 1008HA. Similarly, it eliminates the other major annoyance of the 1008HA model, its non user-replacable battery issue. Replacing the lackluster 5-hour battery on the 1008HA, the 1005HA includes longer lasting 10 or 8-hour batteries, which also can be replaced. The latest in a long line of netbooks to hit the market, the Samsung NC10 offers a slightly higher specification than many of its competitors and at a fairly attractive price too at $499 (329.99 GBP / 404.83 Euro) . The first NC10s began appearing in the United States, UK & Ireland, in November 2008. Only time will tell whether the build-quality is as good as its specifications. An enhanced version with larger trackpad an battery was released on March 7th 2009. This version of the netbook takes the Asus Eee PC 1000HE head on with an improved battery life of 9 hours, 40 minutes, however it cannot compare in price, demanding a rather steap $469 - almost $100 more than the Asus.

The Toshiba Mini NB305 can be considered as a high-end netbook. It replaces the NB305 (N410) as Toshiba's premium netbook. The most notable change between the two models is the addition of dual core Intel Atom N550 processor which replaces the N450 (single core) processor. Unfortunately with the increase in processing capabilities, the NB305's power usage has also gone up; the quoted battery life have dropped from 11hrs to 8hrs and 45mins. Whilst this is disappointing, the new battery time can still be considered as good when compared to similar netbooks. Another area that had received a bump in performance is the memory, previously it had 1GB of DDR2 memory, the NB305 (N600) now comes with 1GB of DDR3 memory. Many components remained the same, this include the 10.1'' LED backlit display, the 250GB hard drive and the Intel GMA 3150 integrated graphics.

Announced in late October 2008, just days after the 2133 Mini-Note had seen major price cuts, a new HP netbook has been announced. Featuring a plastic case and an optionally larger, yet cheaper 10.2" screen - the HP Mini 1000 and MIE Linux are two competitively priced options powered by the Intel Atom, unlike their older Via powered relatives. Featuring the same old 1.6GHz Atom N270, the standard 1024 x 600 resolution, 512 to 2GB of DDR2 RAM and a 8 or 16GB SSD or 60GB HDD, the Mini 1000 and MIE Linux are standard fare for netbooks. Priced at $379-699 the most attractive and repulsive characteristics of the device remain unchanged from the earlier 2133 - the Mini-Note's superior full sized laptop keyboard, and its miniature split-buttoned trackpad. Details are still not entirely confirmed - and thus, features and model specifications listed below are incomplete and likely to change.

At the same time, the Q2005 is limited to just standard Ethernet and a much lower .3MP (versus 1.3MP) webcam. The one signature improvement is the jump from a 4-in-1 card reader to an 8-in-1 card reader. The HP mini 100e is a standard feature netbook, which is designed for the classroom. It will only be available for schools to purchase in bulk and is not on offer for the individual consumer. The HP's main advantage over similar education orientated netbooks is its competitive pricing.

The HP has all the standard specifications that you would expect to find in a netbook, Intel Atom N455 processor, 160 GB hard drive, 1GB DDR3 RAM, 10.1 inch touch screen etc. but it also has additional features which are specifically geared towards it's use in classrooms. The mini 100e has a spill resistant keyboard and a handle for carrying it around, it also has an LED light on the top lid which alerts a teacher as to when a student is online or not. Another feature which you would not expect to find on many modern netbooks is the inclusion of a modem, this is in cases where the netbook is used in countries where more modern internet connections do not exist yet, the 100e does not automatically include wifi connectivity. The HP comes with a choice of operating systems; Windows 7 starter, Windows XP or SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 and also comes in a range of customizable casings.

The Toshiba Mini NB500 is a mid-cost netbook. Toshiba promotes the NB500 as the one of the thinnest and lightest netbooks on the market featuring an Intel Atom processor. This netbook comes with 2GB of DDR3 memory. The NB500 is capable of playing HD quality (720p) video on its 10.1 inch 1024 x 600 LED-backlit display. The Sleep and Music feature of the NB500 allows you to connect your MP3 player or other USB device to the netbook and listen to your music through the speakers without turning the PC on. The NB500 offers ten hours of battery life per charge. This laptop differs from the higher cost Mini NB520 model in that the Mini NB520 has an Atom N550 processor, whereas the Mini NB500 only has an Atom N455. The Mini-Note PC by Hewlett Packard is the company's first venture into the low-priced, ultra-compact laptop market. The Mini-Note tries to establish itself as a higher-end version with an 8.9" screen and full size keyboard. They also offer configuration options such as operating system, processor, RAM and harddrive. This can make the price range from $499 to $749, making it more expensive than the competition. Hewlett Packard also chose an aluminum chassis for the Mini-Note to give it a slightly upscale look. More recently HP has cut prices on the original Mini-Note PC in what people believe is a move to deplete stock before introducing the new HP 10" netbook. The entry model now sports a very attractive $299 price tag - especially considering its best-in-class keyboard and screen resolution.

The LG X170 is a mid-cost netbook. The SmartPOP feature of this laptop uses Bluetooth 3.0 to connect to your LG phone, thus giving you access to your phone on your computer. With access to your phone you can sync your files and e-mail, view contacts/files, and dial numbers from your PC. With the X170 you have a choice of either an Intel Atom N455 or N550 processor, either of which will be able to handle basic commands and browsing (and support DDR3 memory). The integrated Intel GMA 3150 graphics of this netbook does not have HD capabilities. There are color options available for the LG X170 netbook.

The Asus Eee PC 1015PN is one of the first Asus Eee PC netbooks to feature a dual-core Atom CPU. Acer Aspire One D255

The Acer Aspire One D255 is a netbook released as a counterpart to the Aspire One D260. It hosts improved outer aesthetics and a dual-core Atom N550 CPU, which according to Engadget is “a first for an Acer netbook.” In particular, the processor operates at 1.5GHz with 512KB of L2 cache. Plus it supports hyperthreading. Other components include a 10.1” display with a 1024x699 resolution, an integrated Intel graphics module, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, WiFi connectivity, and Bluetooth wireless. There is also speculation that the Aspire One D255 might support dual boots (Android / Windows 7) like the D260. That remains to be seen, however.

The Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker is a mid to expensive netbook released in late 2009. Sharp describes the netbooks as a Mobile Internet Tool that is easy to handle as a mobile phone but still has all the functionality of a PC. The Sharp PC-Z1 NetWalker has a quick launch function, a necessity for modern netbooks, where the netbook can allow the user to access e-mail and instant messaging services in under three seconds while the rest of the operating system loads in the background. The LCD is a 5-inch touch screen - a very unique feature for the price that Sharp is asking. Other touch screen netbooks on the market are priced at over a thousand, and sometimes over two thousand, a huge difference from the four to five hundred range that the PC-Z1 NetWalker is in.

The Latitude E2110 replaces the E2100 as Dell's only netbook in their business line. It is designed with younger audience in mind with it's rubberized durable casing, spill resistance and antimicrobial keyboard. It also has optional full system management support abilities for IT maintenance. The E2110 is essentially the same as it's previous iteration other than it's updated processor (Intel Atom N470) and chipset (Intel Pine Trail). The Simmtronics Simmbook is a 1.2 kg compact netbook produced by Simmtronics Semiconductors. This was initially created as a unit for developing countries, but there has been enough market demand to release it globally. It uses the 1.6GHz Intel Atom chip, comes with 1GB of RAM, and a 160 GB hard drive. Both the hard drive and the RAM can be upgraded later if you need to. The LCD display is 10.2 inches and works at a resolution of 1024x600 pixels.

In order to keep the Simmtronics Simmbook useful in the widest possible variety of settings, it also has VGA output like you'll find on a standard laptop. This means you can plug an external monitor or projector into the Simmbook for presentations. Acer Aspire M3 Series

The Acer Aspire M3 Series is one of two small form factor, all-in-one desktop series (Aspire M3, Aspire X3) released in summer 2010. In particular, the M3 desktops host either an AMD Athlon II or AMD Phenom II CPU with either an ATI HD 5450 or Nvidia GeForce 9200 graphics module. The X3, on the other hand, begins with just integrated Intel graphics, though it can be later upgraded. Mind you, the M3 is limited to a smaller hard-drive (640GB) and a weaker processor, but offers greater expansion via dual PCI Express x1 slots, an open PCI Express slot, and bays for an extra optical drive and hard drive. Suffice it to say, the M3 is better equipped for gamers, whereas its counterpart is more for the business-savvy.

Asus Eee PC 1015P

The Asus Eee PC 1015P is one of three 10.1” notebooks (1015P, 1016P, 1018P) announced at CeBit 2010. Each model is composed from aluminum and includes a chiclet keyboard, a webcam, a double-array microphone, and a 14-hour rechargeable battery. The 1015P is the base unit and quite similar to the 1005P, except that it boasts a larger touchpad that’s been moved farther away from the keyboard. As of March 2010, the 1015P is expected to feature a dual-core 1.66GHz Intel Atom processor, although all other stats are currently unknown.

XO-1, The Children's Machine

Also known as the XO-1, the Children's Machine is the cost-effictive laptop project by the US-based, non-profit company One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), http://laptop.org. Founded by members of MIT faculty, its goal is to produce a $100 laptop that can be distributed to schoolchildren around the world. While that price goal had not been met by the start of 2008, the XO is a reality -- a fully featured laptop with a color screen and wireless connectivity that runs a new graphical user interface on top of Linux.

Hilights of the technology include instant "mesh" networking between laptops without the need for an external server or Internet, a unique low power/low cost color display that can be used as a monochrome reflective screen in daylight , a measly 2 Watt power consumption rating (compared to 25-40W for a typical laptop), a rugged case designed to withstand harsh conditions, a web browser based on the Firefox engine, a word processor, and email offer through Google's GMail. Educational software includes programming languages based on Logo, Smalltalk and Python, a music construction set that turns the XO into a synthesizer with the typewriter keys serving as a two-octave keyboard, plus word processing, drawing, calculation and measurement applications. A built in camera takes still and video pictures or records audio. The machine has no hard drive or other moving parts, but has a gigabyte of flash memory, an SD card slot and three USB ports, which can be used for storage devices as well as etxernal keyboards, mice and measurement devices.

While the computer is not available for retail sale, a Christmastime 2007 "Give One, Get One" program allowed supporters in North America to purchase a computer for a child in the developing world and buy one for themselves, for a total investment of $400, half of it tax-deductible. Wiki, mailing list and Web bulletin board systems allowed users to form support communities for machines they purchased through the non-commercial project. The Beta-1 release began in late 2006, followed by a Beta-2 release in February, 2007. Quanta Computer has been contracted to manufacture the XO-1.

It offers all the mobility of a netbook – weighing only 1.3 lbs – but compromises less in terms of hardware. Acer Aspire X3 Series

The Acer Aspire X3 Series is one of two small form factor, all-in-one desktop series (Aspire M3, Aspire X3) released in summer 2010. Whereas the M3 is outfitted more for gaming, the X3 series offers improved processing for mainstream productivity applications. It features 4GB of memory; a broader choice of processors including AMD Athlon II, AMD Phenom II, Intel Core i3, or Intel Pentium E6600; and a much larger 1GB hard drive. Its basic version offers just integrated Intel graphics (unlike its peer, which comes right off the bat with third-party graphics), but can later be upgraded with an Nvidia GeForce 9200. Signature to the M3 Series is its improved connectivity options, which include HDMI, a single PCI Express slot, an open PCI Express x16 slot, and over 11 USB 2.0 ports.

The Dell Mini 10 is a value-priced netbook computer released in early 2009. The Mini 10 is a fully functional ultra-portable notebook, however the cost and small form factor limit its capabilities. Users will find an Intel GMA 500 inside for graphics, which supports Aero effects in Windows 7. This netbook features a 10” widescreen display with 1024 x 576 or 1366 x 768 screen resolutions options. Users can also choose between The Intel Atom Z520 (1.33GHz) or the Atom Z530 (1.60GHz) plus a variety of hard drive options. The Dell Mini 10 is compatible with either 3 or 6 cell user-replaceable Li-Ion batteries. Other features include a 3-in-1 card reader, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, a 10/100 LAN port, an HDMI connector, 3 USB 2.0 ports and audio in/out jacks to maximize the netbook’s on-the-go functionality. Lenovo IdeaPad S9

The IdeaPad S9 is Lenovo's answer to the netbook phenomena. Featuring a 9" LED backlit screen, and coming in at just over two pounds, the S9 presents a slightly cheaper version of the S10. Priced at $349, the S9 will target those interested in a mobile machine less cumbersome and delicate than a laptop. Not meant to replace a user's primary computer or laptop, the S9 comes with a single core 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 512MB of DDR2 ram,and a small 8GB SSD. While not the latest in cutting edge technology, this allows Lenovo to provide a small and light machine at a low end-user cost.

On December 16th 2008, Lenovo released the IdeaPad S9 in North America. The device is available through third party websites or directly from Lenovo for around $350.

Asus Eee PC 1018P

The Asus Eee PC Asus Eee PC 1018P is one of three 10.1” notebooks (1015P, 1016P, 1018P) announced at CeBit 2010. As the top model in the series, the 1018P features 1-2GB of RAM, a 250 or 500GB SATA HDD, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and an integrated fingerprint reader. More notably, the 1018P will sport an OPTIONAL USB 3.0 interface. Unfortunately the 1018P lacks the 1016P’s integrated 3G, but users will likely have the option of adding a 3G modem for an additional fee. Note also that all three models are supposed to have a 14-hour battery life, but critics claim the 1018P is limited to only 10 hours.
