The Data Robotics Drobo FS is a full-fledged networked-storage device released in April 2010 as a mass upgrade from the DroboShare. The FS sports the same chassis, but it adds along a dual-core CPU, more RAM, Gigabit Ethernet, and a plethora of minor tweaks, the result of which is a 400% increase in performance speed. Included are five HDD bays that support any SATA I/II drive, regardless of manufacturer, capacity, spindle speed, and/or cache. Plus the FS supports DroboApps community-created, community-supported applications that can, for one, turn the FS into an iTunes, CTorrent, BiTorrent, or UPnP/DLNA server, to name a few. Additional features include SMB/AFP support; network backups of both Macs and PCs (+Time Machine stamp via DroboApps); and file transfers up to 40MB/sec.

The Thecus N0204 miniNAS is an ultra-compact miniature NAS unit that features two 2.5” SATA drives, allowing for a total capacity of 1TB. Once connected by either Gigabit LAN or optional 802.11b/g WiFi, the unit can be used for UPnP media streaming; for operating an FTP, Bit-Torrent, or iTunes server; and for network printing via a USB-connected printer. Plus, an entire household can tap into the N0204 to share photos and other media files. The Thecus N3200 is a network-attached media server designed for use in a small office / home office (SOHO) environment. The G-Tech G-SPEED eS is a full featured professional external hard disk interface designed mainly for use with multi-track video or audio recording. Four hot-swappable Hitachi Deskstar SATA drives are housed inside the unit which comes with two replaceable smart cooling fans and an internal power supply. The available capacities of the G-SPEED eS drive range from 1TB to 8TB, making the maximum available space when using four drives 32TB. The unit comes configured in RAID 0 or 'speed' formation which means all four drives are recognized as one, giving the fastest data transfer and the total usable capacity of all drives. However, various RAID configurations may be achieved by using the PCIe X 4 RAID Controller Card including RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and also JBOD or 'just a bunch of disks' formations. A 'pro-sumer' version of this drive for smaller scale production would be the G-RAID3 which has only two drives configured in RAID 0 (speed). Comes in a stylish Mac G5 looking design made from lightweight aluminum and preformatted for Mac OS X.

Internal replacement drives are available from G-Tech in 250GB, 500GB, 750GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities and are the only replacement drives that are compatible. A G-Tech PCIe X 4 RAID Controller Card is included which installs into your computer and allows the connection of up to four of these units simultaneously. This raises the write speed to 600MB per second which is optimal for recording multiple streams or 'tracks' of high definition video at once.

The TeraStation III WSS is a business-oriented network storage device new from Buffalo in 2010. The TeraStation III WSS utilizes Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 Express Edition, which is specifically geared toward business use (with its focus on workgroup and domain settings). The x86 hardware platform is a new feature for Buffalo. This hardware platform allows the TeraStation III WSS to use four quick-swap SATA hard drives. The Synology DS409slim is a four-bay network storage device that comes in a maximum 3TB capacity and offers a variety of drive configurations such as Basic, JBOD, RAID 0/1/5/6, and RAID 5+Spare. UPnP compatibility has been integrated for streaming audio and video to DNLA compatible devices such as televisions, stereo systems and consoles like Xbox and PS3 and multiple popular file formats are also supported. A host of applications such as an iTunes server and Synology's Audio Station come with the drive, the latter of which works with the(not included) direction-free remote control to allow you to freely operate it when hooked up to a set of USB speakers. The DS (Disk Station) series accepts both HDD and SSD drives and is ideal for a small office or home backup server. Disk Station Manager 2.2 software is the main operating program for the drive and is a web based platform that you access with your web browser to manage the drive contents.

The Synology Disk Station DS409 is a network-attached storage server designed for small-and-medium business owners. It features four bays that can fit SATA, SATA-II, and SSD drives up to a maximum capacity of 8TB. Unlike Seagate’s BlackArmor NAS 440, the DS409 is unfortunately not hot-swappable. It does, however, include a Gigabit interface, as well as two USB ports for adding external hard drives (FAT32, NTFS, ext3), uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), printers, speakers, and even iPods. Sadly, it also lacks a one-touch backup button for USB devices. Highlights include an iTunes server capability, UPnP media streaming, and what critics hail as a powerful audio/photo media browser.

The G-Tech G-SPEED eS PRO is a professional external hard drive array aimed at the multi-track video recording/post-production studio. The enclosure houses four hot-swappable SATA II drives which come prearranged in RAID 0 (speed) formation. This means that all drives are recognized by the computer as one drive, and data transfer speeds remain fast. An online server is also available which automatically checks the drive for problems, even sending up to four emails if there are any serious issues. This and the G-SPEED eS are a popular choice amongst professional and home users who work in large scale video production, the difference being that this is much faster with it's 12Gbit mini-SAS connection. Unfortunately it can only be linked with one other eS PRO for a total of 16TB available drive space whereas the regular G-SPEED eS uses the slower 3Gbit eSATA but can be chained together in groups of four for a maximum of 32TB. As usual G-Tech drives look like and are formatted for use with Macintosh OS X computers, Windows XP and Vista users will require a reformat before using.

Other RAID configurations are supported, including RAID 1, 3, 5 and 6. This flexibility allows you to have some drives backup other drives or each drive running separately or all drives as one etc. A G-Tech PCIe x8 IOP RAID Controller Card which installs into your computer is included which lets you run two eS PRO units together. This enables two simultaneous streams of uncompressed 10-bit HD to be recorded at once instead of just one as well as providing a maximum of 16TB of total storage space. Better than Fibre-Channel speed performance is offered via super-fast 12Gbit mini-SAS connections compared to the now standard 3Gbit eSATA.

Keeping a spare drive in case of drive failure would enable quick hot-swapping for minimal disruption of workflow. It can be configured with either a 2.5” or 3.5” SATA HDD, two USB flash drives, and an eSATA storage drive. Plus, it sports 4 Ethernet LAN ports for connecting computers, but it is also 100% ready for a separately purchasable wireless USB dongle. Once hooked up, the N1200 can stream media to any DLNA-compatible device; share photos; distribute iTunes; and function as a central FTP repository for network data. It does lack a few niceties though, like support for an IP webcam or RAID configurations. But its simplicity serves as a benefit for at-home users; consider the web-based administration, which can be accessed from any browser off any operating system.

The HP MediaSmart Server LX195 is an inexpensive network server designed to function as the central repository of a small home-based PC or Macintosh network. It is HP’s most inexpensive server, which makes sense considering it only hosts a single SATA drive and four USB ports. On the bright side though, the LX195 can handle remote connections, automatic PC backups, and Web-based photo publishing directly to photo-sharing sites like Snapfish or Flickr. Included also is a standard user management system, network file sharing, and in-home media streaming. Perhaps the largest drawback though is the unit’s lack of support for redundant storage, as well as printers and IP cameras.
