The Nike Free 7.0 is part of Nike's new line of shoes intended to break into the barefoot running market. Running barefoot has been a growing movement among some runners as a way to prevent injury and strengthen calf and foot muscles. Shoes in Nike's signature Air series are too cushioning for some people, which is where the Free line comes into play. The main technology behind the Nike Free is the compressed EVA midsole, which has deep cuts along the entire length so that it bends and moves along with your foot - therefore mimicking running barefoot.

More information

Nike recommends you build up your strength with this shoe since it takes your muscles time to get used to running barefoot, especially if you've mainly been wearing heavily cushioned shoes. You can use Nike's Nike ID program with the Nike Free and create a shoe that matches your style.

Recent Nike Sports Research Lab (NSRL) tests have actually shown that Free 7.0 supports some runners as well as or better than many top end stability shoes in the market. If you are used to wearing a stability running shoe, don't be put off by the lack of dual density foam in the midsole of the Free 7.0, you will be pleasantly surprised with it's level of support.

I haven't run barefoot since I was a kid, but I am really looking forward to giving these shoes a try. And I loove the pseudo-retro look too.

I bought these because I thought they looked cool. I had no idea that they were designed as a barefoot runner. Interesting. Who would want to do that? What if you stepped on a sharp rock when you are 5km away from home and you cut your foot? Shoes are generally a good idea!
