Wii (pronounced "we" as in "what the hell were we thinking when we named this?") is the official name of the new console Nintendo will be releasing later this year. The codename Revolution that has been used has now been officially replaced by this name. News of the new name came out a couple of days ago, and since then there's been quite a lot of discussion about how good the name is.
Personally, I'm quite ambivalent to the name. Even upon first hearing, it sounds quite silly, and it's obvious how the name can be used for awful puns, when you say any word enough it entirely loses it's meaning. Things could be a lot worse obviously, they could've named it any one of a million worse names, offensive things, etc. Obviously they'd never do such a thing, but in the grand scheme of things, the word Wii just really isn't that bad. It's not that good either, Genesis; now that's an awesome name! When people get their hands on the machine and see the cool new way that games can be played I think nobody will give the name a second thought. As Nintendo has shown with the DS, when it comes to control, and fun, and all the stuff that made us play games when we were young, Nintendo is still king. Even if I've since grown out of their offerings onto more visceral fare.
