"Hi Erik, so in a perfect world in order to seed the products what can I add without over stepping the community focus?"

For now, you can continue to add products, and you should look at the products featured on our homepage and around the site as a guideline (REV 70GB is a good start). I would suggest to start by adding your best or most interesting products; we will feature them along the way to try and receive honest feedback from our users.

We've been talking about your situation this morning, and we've come up with a pretty good solution. We would like to revisit the concept of a bulk upload tool, via XML, as long as the information met a certain quality standard. We need to come up with a schema and information standard that you would adhere to, and do some minor tech development on our end. I'll let you know, but it's something we could get going fairly quickly (weeks).

Now, since we are still fairly new, you may not get the volume of feedback that you hope for (too many products, too few users reviewing), but if Iomega were to work with us by linking to PW from your product pages on the Iomega website, you could leverage your existing user base to accelerate the review/feedback process.

Let me know what you think.

Interesting. We've seen other manufacturers doing this kind of thing, and we encourage it, as long as it benefits the consumer and our community. I've removed the Iomega mfgr text from the REV 70 description. It's our policy that descriptions are written as original text by our community members with something close to a neutral point of view (NPOV) (see Wikipedia). A bulk upload tool is something that we've grappled with from a policy standpoint. Likely all of the descriptions will be copied text from some other source (likely Iomega's website in this case), so this makes the tool undesirable. Having said that, we encourage you to add products with a NPOV, and we're willing to work with you to make it easier.

Hi Erik, as you have probably guessed I work for Iomega and see this as a test. To that end we have no interest in trying to manipulate the products on your site, I just want to seed the product data and let the community provide genuine feedback. Adding the products one by one is very labour intensive, is there a bulk import function for basic product data? CSV / XML. For example if I had an XML feed which I alreayd use for pricegrabber, kelkoo, shop.com etc can it be imported into your site? I can basically create a feed in any format you would like with whatever attributes are required.

Hey ogorman. Great work on the Iomega! To answer your question, the Where to Buy section is populated by an XML request to Shopping.com's API. That section generates ad revenue for ProductWiki. The choice of parameters determining what shows up is done by moderators. The system makes a first "guess" when a product is first added, and then it gets cleaned up later if need be. I've fixed the Iomega. Our policy is, that if there aren't any "Where to Buy" links, you should add a link to a store that sells it by clicking "Add a link".
