The NR901 is an excellent reciever with more inputs than can be reasonably used. Even though it does not have hdmi support, it is more than worth its price for the audio functionality alone. The power provided by the NR901 is very clean and is difficult to drive to distortion, even with large speakers. I would describe the sound characteristics as slightly warm, providing for excellent music reproduction, even on "harsh" or "analytical" speakers. Home theater use is what this was designed for, having ample power and great dynamic range, you can crank this up to reference volumes and experience amazing contrast between dialogue and action scenes in movies.
