Onkyo TX-NR906

The Onkyo TX-NR906 is the flagship 7.1 channel a/v receiver in the 2008 Onkyo receiver lineup. It features 145 Watts / channel of power to each of it's channel with a THD of 0.05%. Like the step-down TX-SR876 and TX-SR806, it is THX Ultra2 certified. It features an HQV Reon-VX upscaling video processor that will upscale all analog video sources to 1080p. The NR906 supercedes 2007's Onkyo TX-NR905 as the flagship receiver and the two are almost physically indistinguishable. New to the NR906 is Audyssey's MultEQ XT that will automatically calibrate your system as well as dynamically maintain consistent volume and EQ over different listening sources. It has an MSRP of $2299 and was released in mid-August 2008.

I've searched for some time looking for a networking receiver that would not only offer many features, but fit the bill as well. I deduced my findings down to 3 models including: Yamaha 3900, Denon 4308, and the Onkyo TX NR 906. I pulled the trigger on the Onkyo TX NR 906. I just received it this past week, and it gets more impressive every day. Some may have questioned the display as being blocky, but I find it to be very clear and sylish. Way better than the Yamaha 3900. Face it, it's not a LCD screen, and if it would be you could add $3000.00 onto the price tag. I have not set up the networking yet, but what I like about the unit so far is: having a lot of power at 145 watts/channel, easy to find labled connections on the back, being extremely well built and I mean one HEAVY unit, an AL drop down door face, THX II certification, HD radio, and the good overall function of the remote. The remote may have taken a knock by some user(s); however, this individual has absolutely no clue and/or they did not actually make the purchase. I was able to navigate around the remote after about 5 minutes. Very intuitive.

Again, I have only owned this unit for 3 days now, but am already very happy with the Onkyo. I would make the purchase again, and like myself if your looking for a gorgeous, powerful, more than capable unit for a good price this may be it.

With regard the Con saying their won't be publicly available firmware updates, I decided to ask Onkyo directly. Here's the response I got:

"Jeffery,
At this time there are no firmware updates for the TX-NR906. Should any become available it is based on the needs as to whether the customer can do it or if it needs to be done by the authorized service center.

I'm having a hard time getting this unit to communicate with my network. It won't show a server list, although it does show correctly assigned IP numbers. The manual is very thin on this subject, like "Network control enabled / disabled": This allows you to enable / disable network control (no idea what that might be?!?).

Audyssey calibration stops right after the first speaker, with a detection error. Even though this speaker is making itself heard sure enough!

So far, I'm having a great time re-listening all of my music. The sound is awesome, it really makes my Kef XQ40s stand out. But I'm still missing a lot of functionality here...
