Onkyo TX-SR605

Note: This receiver will be superceded by the Onkyo TX-SR606 scheduled to come out in the Summer of 2008.

The Onkyo TX-SR605 is a 7.1 channel receiver supporting HDMI 1.3a (2 inputs/1 output) for a very affordable MSRP of $499. It also includes 3 component, and 5 S-Video/composite that are transcoded and output to the HDMI output, simplifying your setup with all video and audio signals coming out of a single HDMI cable. This receiver was highly anticipated by gaming and A/V enthusiasts for its excellent lineup of specs (especially the HDMI support) and its low suggested retail price.

If you want an excellent value A/V system capable of some fancy video switching, I suggest you put this one on your list for consideration. It's supposed to be out in mid-May and knocks the socks off its competitors at that price point.

Do you know if this can do audio via HDMI? I was looking at the TX-SR505 but it mentioned that you couldn't do audio via the HDMI input.

Yes, it features the full A/V processing over HDMI 1.3a, which includes audio. The TX-SR505 is really a budget system, and the 605 offering (1) video transcoding (all video sources output to HDMI and component), (2) more power (90W vs. 75 W), and (3) audio over HDMI for only a few hundred dollars more. In my mind, the 605 is the ultimate value receiver supporting the new standards.
