The Samsung SE-506AB is a compact portable Blu-ray writer that sports buffer under run protection to prevent errors caused by write speed and data transfer timing inconsistencies. It is 12 percent smaller than Samsung's other Blu-ray drives and made eco friendly with lead free soldering and low power USB connection without any other wires needed. You can also connect it to a compatible TV via USB for use as a normal DVD player as well, allowing you to play not only DVD and Blu-ray discs but also BD-R and DVD-R discs containing your own videos, music and photos. It features a high-gloss anti-scratch finish and works with all major operating systems including Mac and Win7, and a variety of speeds and media types are supported with BD Quadruple Layering as outlined below in the features section. This drive has also been improved over earlier models by now recognizing the fifth sub-directory and over 3000 files, whereas earlier drives could only see the first sub-directory and access 1000 files. The Pioneer DVR-1910 is an entry-level, internal DVD/CD writer combo unit. It works with both single- and dual-layer discs, recording at up to 20X on DVD (single), 12x on DVD (double), and up to 40X with CDs. The technology used includes a Liquid Crystal Tilt/Blur Compensator – built by Pioneer for more reliable writing and reading of low to medium quality discs. The LaCie d2 DVD+/-RW is an external DVD Rewriter that features Lightscribe technology. This means that when using Lightscribe media, once you have finished burning the disc, you can flip it over and use the drive's own laser to burn an image onto the top. It should be noted that complex images can take between 15-30 minutes to burn. There are two versions of this drive, the cheaper uses USB 2.0 while the more expensive uses USB 2.0 and Firewire 400. The drive is made by Samsung (Model: SH-S203N) and housed in a brushed silver aluminum case designed by Neil Poulton and there is no internal fan. Software for Windows and Mac is included and the Reading and Writing of Dual-Layer DVD's is supported(Rewriting of Dual-Layer DVD's is not). Although their products may be pricey, LaCie makes up for it in quality and design.

The Samsung SN-S083A/BEBN is a slim, internal 8X DVD/CD writer specially made for use in desktop PCs. Once connected via a SATA interface, it can handle single-layered CDs and DVDs, as well as dual-layered DVDs. Its core is powered by SpeedPlus Power Speed technology, which utilizes an optimized algorithm to ensure the fastest writing/reading speed. Included also is double OPC (optimum power control) for zero-error recording; S.A.T. (speed adjustment technology) for error-free reading; and a firmware live update feature that automatically upgrades the unit’s firmware via Internet. The ASUS BC-1205PT is an internal HD DVD drive, capable of reading & writing/rewriting a variety of disc formats. Users can connect this drive to their PC via one E-IDE or PATA cable. A SATA adapter is also included. This drive is not capable of writing to recordable HD DVD discs, but can read them at 2.4X speed. The ASUS HR-0205T is also capable of writing single or dual layer DVDs, with a max speed of 5X for DVD±R, 5X for DVD ±RW and 5X for DVD±R DL. CD-Rs and CD-RWs can be read and written at 15X. The LaCie Portable DVD+/-RW is a compact, external DVD Rewriter that comes in two versions. The only difference between the two is the cheaper uses USB 2.0 and the more expensive uses Firewire 400 to connect to your computer. Lightscribe is a unique feature which, when using appropriate Lightscribe media, allows you to flip the disc over and burn an image into the top using the the drive's laser. Detailed images can take up to 20-30 minutes to burn whereas simple titles take just a few. The overall design is by Sam Hecht in a slim chocolate brown mirror-gloss finish. Windows and Mac software is included(compatible with windows Vista). Dual USB or Firewire ports are included on both versions which allow for the connection of another device to the drive. An AC power adapter is included, however it can also run on just USB/Firewire.

The LaCie d2 Blu-ray Professional is an external Blu-ray DVD Rewriter capable of playing back up to four hours of HD video and storing up to 50GB of data per disc. This, LaCie's only current Blu-ray offering, connects via USB 2.0 and Firewire and comes bundled with software for both Windows and Mac. The drive itself is actually made by Panasonic and housed in a matte silver shell, designed by Neil Poulton for LaCie(French company). The main use of this drive is to back up and play large video files as well as Blu-ray DVD's, and also to back up large amounts of important data with accuracy. Maximum Blu-ray write speed is 8X, while maximum CD-R write speed is 48X, overall nothing special compared to other drives. Burning of regular(16X) and Dual-Layer(8X) DVD's is also supported, as well as Rewriting of all formats. The high price of these is largely due to the bundled software and the name, although performance wise it is not that much faster than it's competitors.
