FreeNAS is server software that allows you to turn any computer with a hard drive into a dedicated network-attached storage (NAS) box. It is based off of FreeBSD and is open-source. FreeNAS takes up less than 64 megabytes when installed is is configured via the FreeNAS WebGui, which is accessed by typing in the IP address of the FreeNAS server in any web browser. FreeNAS also can be used as a software RAID. All hardware RAID cards that support FreeBSD are supported by FreeNAS.

Additional Information

FreeNAS can be installed on a partitioned hard drive (done for you during installation), or on a compact flash (CF) or USB drive. Installation on a seperate drive is recommended, as then additional power and encryption options are avaliable. External USB hard drives, such as MyBooks, can be plugged into a FreeNAS server and shared. FreeNAS requires a monitor and keyboard for inital installation and configuration, however once that is completed no monitor or keyboard is required. Additional and advanced configuration is done via the WebGUI. FreeNAS requires 64 megabytes of RAM for a basic installation, however more (up to 512 mb) is required for RAID configurations. FreeNAS supports SMB/SAMBA/CIFS Windows File Sharing, FTP, NFS, SSH, RSYNC, AFT, and UPnP. It also can be used to encrypt drives on the server.

CINEMA 4D is a 3D application that is popular amongst matte painters in film production, largely due to the BodyPaint 3D functionality. It is equally popular amongst motion graphics artists, thanks to its excellent integration with compositing application pipelines, and a very artist-friendly, customizable workflow and interface. It has been used for films such as We Are the Strange, Polar Express, Open Season and Monster House.

The application relies on widely used computer 3-D technology, which works by creating groups of "points" (known as vertices) which form surfaces when connected. The illusion of three dimensions is created by modeling objects out of multiple surfaces. Still pictures, movies and game environments (among other things) can be created with this technique.

CINEMA 4D has its own runtime scripting and programming language C.O.F.F.E.E. which is rather similar in form to JScript and an advanced modern C++ API, with an extensive SDK for developing platform-independent plug-ins.

Beginning with Release 11, Cinema4D for Mac has been written in Cocoa, which ensures maximum performance by using the 64-bit architecture of modern Intel-powered Macs. For non-Intel-based Macs, a 32-bit mode is available.

Four different packages have been released by MAXON: the core CINEMA 4D application, the XL-Bundle (including NET Render [3 licenses], PyroCluster, Advanced Render, MOCCA and Thinking Particles), the Studio Bundle, which includes all modules, and the Production Bundle, available only upon request, which comes with a service contract, Linux version, Renderman support and a number of other high-end studio-specific features.

Initially, CINEMA 4D was developed for Amiga computers in the early nineties, but has since been released for Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows.

MAXON has created a way for all users to be able to 'get into' 3D with their software by pursuing this route. For R10 there is, in addition to the installation DVD, a training DVD containing more than 6GB of video tutorials in either German or English. MAXON bundles HTML manuals and tutorials/videos with its software. New in release 10 are context-sensitive help menus.

CINEMA 4D has been embraced by the Adobe After Effects community because of C4D's external compositing tags and object IDs, which make exporting 3-D data efficient and simple. Separate alpha and depth information may also be exported. Because the export feature also supports Apple's Final Cut Pro and other popular software, it fits well into several post-production studio configurations.

Winsplit Revolution

Winsplit Revolution is a small, free application for Windows operating systems designed to help position and organize the user's windows with the use of keyboard shortcuts. The application is useful efficiently managing windows on computers with large, or multiple LCD displays with quite a bit of screen real estate. Winsplit revolution works by dividing the monitor up into predefined regions (quadrants, halves, thirds, etc.) and the user can send a window to any region (or another display) with a user-defined keyboard shortcut. The default settings use the numeric keypad to be isomorphic to the associated window location. For example, "CTL+ALT+9" sends the current window to the "upper-right" quadrant, and "CTL-ALT+4" will send the window to the "left-half" of the display. Winsplit Revolution is available as a free download and is licensed under a Creative Commons license. The current version is v9.02, as of February 27th, 2009, with the first release v1.0 first available on February 5, 2006.

With the June 5th, 2008 release of Winsplit revolution, the application will begin using the Ubuntu-like convention of vYEAR.MONTH version number scheme. Previous versions were given version numbers in a more traditional vX.Y format with the last release being v1.9 in that format.

The new version most notably has implemented two features: 1) a custom layout manager, and 2) the Drag'n'Go feature. The layout manager allows the user to define custom regions rather than relying on the built-in regions, whereas the Drag'n'Go feature allows users to use the mouse in conjuction with the CTL+ALT keys to drag a window into a defined region. This feature is the basic premise of GridMove.

Parallels Desktop 5.0 for Mac is a low-end program. It is designed to allow a user to run Windows 7 side by side with Mac OS X. It features the ability to drag and drop files between operating systems, and the ability to run Windows without rebooting. The software, once installed, allows a user to drag and drop files between Windows 7 and Mac OS X with ease. This lets a user switch files easily to each operating system and back, in case a file isn't compatible with one of them, they can just run it with the other. Parallels Desktop 5.0 for Mac is also able to run Windows 7 at the same time as OS X without rebooting. It is able to achieve this by running Windows 7 through a virtual machine, which lets the user run an OS in a window through devoting a certain amount of RAM and harddisk space. This specific virtual machine requires at least 1GB of RAM, and 450MB of HDD space. The user themselves may choose how much extra space they want the virtual Windows 7 OS to have for itself. Since the user can run Windows 7 in a window, they can do whatever they need to do with Windows 7 without having to wait and reboot their Mac. To avoid glitches and slowdown, it is recommended that the user has one of the following operating systems installed on their Mac: OS X 10.4.11 or higher, OS X 10.5.2 or higher, or OS X 10.6.x (32 or 64 bit) or higher running on an Intel Mac. When compared to a similar product, Codeweaver's CrossOver Mac, Parallels Desktop 5.0 for Mac has an advantage in that it can actually run Windows 7 itself, and not just the programs for it.

The program can integrate with Outlook to show its appointments and tasks on the desktop.
