Pentax Optio W90
$279.00
Released January, 2011
The Pros:On-board panorama view edits and clips photos, producing believable stitched images without software. Consistent performance both in and out of water, open-air performance comparable to any competitor's non-waterproofs. Rugged body construction protects easily against most physical damage.
The Cons:Video quality may be HD but is susceptible to blurring. No zoom function while filming video. Lacks optical image stabilization, typically found in cameras around this price range.
The Pentax Optio W90 is a compact digital camera that is waterproof, shockproof, coldproof, and dustproof. Featured is a 12.1MP CCD sensor; a 28mm wide-angle, 5X optical zoom lens; and a 2.7” LCD display with a widescreen aspect ratio.

As an entry-level camera, the W90 camera can capture 720p high-definition video, but only in Motion JPEG (vs AVCHD). Also included are a myriad of preset scenes and settings (e.g., 9-Point AF, Face Detection, Blink Detection), an autofocus lamp for quickly and accurately focusing in difficult lighting conditions, and an HDMI output. Unfortunately, is limited by a short-life battery, the inability to capture moving objects without encountering blurs, and a badly placed Flash (it’s right where people put their finger to hold the camera).
