I am an artist and I prefer to sketch in pen. The black fine-point Pentel R.S.V.P. is by far my very favorite pen for the job. The ink flows with hardly any pressure so no dents in the paper, and unlike gel pens, the ball-point can create light and feathery lines so I can pretty much shade with this pen the way I might a pencil.

I get hand cramps from writing so the ink flow is the most important factor but I also love the form factor of these pens. They are just the right thickness - thin enough to be agile in my hand, thick enough to have something to hold on to. And the rubber grip does improve comfort. Lastly, the length is surprisingly important. I cannot stand stubby pens! These are a bit longer than most and the added weight of the cap on the butt-end counter-weighs the writing tip.

It sounds crazy to get so worked up about a *pen* but I honestly do think these are the wonderful tools for both writing and drawing. I buy the black fine tip pens in boxes by the dozen at Office Depot. :)
