The Philips MCD988/37 is touted as a "DVD Micro Theater." The system features 5.1 Dolby Digital surround that is simulated through only two speakers; using Dolby Virtual Speaker technology, the speakers have retractable side pannels that are motorised and actually move during playback to offer a more three-dimensional surround emulation than conventional static virtual surround speakers. The system comes with a powered subwoofer that together generates 400 watts of power. It also comes with a progressive scan DVD player that can upsample to 1080i and 720p via HDMI, though it cannot perform 1080p conversion. The system also is capable of playing DVD, DivX, (S)VCD, MP3-CD, WMA-CD, CD(RW) and Picture CD media, as well as reading music and photos from USB devices. An FM tuner, dual-disk changer, and alarm clock round out its list of noteable specs.
